Laboratory characteristics of recent hepatitis A in Korea:Ongoing epidemiological shift

AIM:To evaluate seroprevalence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) antibody and investigate demographic,clinical,and laboratory features of recent cases in ***:For the evaluation of hepatitis A seroprevalence,we analyzed the data from 3127 subjects including,healthcare workers and patients who visited Konkuk University Hospital,a secondary referral center,from January to October *** sera with positive IgM were excluded from seroprevalence data for total HAV *** retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 419 patients with HAV,who were diagnosed by the presence of serum IgM antibodies against *** patients presented at Konkuk University Hospital between August 2005 and September ***:Among 3127 sera tested,1428 (45.7%)were positive for anti-HAV *** seroprevalence was very low in teenagers or those in their twenties,increased in those in their thirties,and was > 90% in older *** children younger than 10 years,seroprevalence was increased *** patients with HAV hepatitis were in their twenties and *** γ-glutamyl transpeptidase increased with age and was significantly higher in patients older than 30 *** of severity,such as decreased albumin and increased bilirubin,were also more prominent in the older age group;however,the leukocyte count was higher and the frequency of leukopenia was lower in younger patients than in older ***:There has been an apparent epidemiological shift in HAV seroprevalence and a change in the peak age of HAV *** study could provide baseline data of recent hepatitis A in Asia.

The unstructured data such as visual information,natural language,and human behaviors opens up a wide array of opportunities in the field of artificial intelligence(Al).The memory-centric neuromorphic computing(MNC)has been proposed for the efficient processing of unstructured data,bypassing the von Neumann bottleneck of current computing *** development of MNC would provide massively parallel processing of unstructured data,realizing the cognitive Al in edge and wearable *** this review,recent advances in memory-centric neuromorphic devices are discussed in terms of emerging nonvolatile memories,volatile switches,synaptic plasticity,neuronal models,and memristive neural network.

Double-sided gastric perforation after a motorcycle accident in Korea:A case report

BACKGROUND Motorcycle accidents often result in abdominal trauma in patients seeking emergency *** to the hollow viscera,including the duodenum,jejunum,urinary bladder,and colorectum,are relatively *** contrast,owing to the protective function of the anterior rib cage,gastric rupture is exceptionally rare,with an incidence of<1.7%.Gastric rupture typically occurs in the anterior wall and rarely presents as multiple *** report describes an unusual case of multiple gastric ruptures resulting from blunt *** SUMMARY A 21-year-old man,who was involved in a motorcycle collision at 70 km/hour after consuming a large meal,presented with *** examination revealed abdominal *** test results indicated elevated amylase,lipase,and liver enzyme *** tomography showed pneumoperitoneum,hemoperitoneum,and gastric wall discontinuation,suggesting gastric perforation alongside pancreatic,splenic,and hepatic *** embolization was performed because of active contrast leakage in the left gastric and right gastroepiploic *** laparotomy revealed substantial blood loss,hematoma,and gastric contents scattered throughout the abdominal *** 10 cm gastric perforations in the anterior and posterior walls were identified,as well as severe liver damage,splenic injury,and pancreatic *** interventions included primary closure of the gastric wall,splenectomy,and partial *** temporary abdominal closure,the patient underwent a second surgery without further *** gastric repair site was resected and reinforced for optimal tissue *** Gastric rupture following blunt trauma is ***,patients without severe complications can recover through surgical interventions and postoperative care.

BACKGROUND Aortic intramural hematoma(IMH) associated with aortic branch tear and intramurally located pseudoaneurysm after blunt trauma has not been ***,we report a case of progressive type A aortic IMH associated with a pseudoaneurysm arising from the injured proximal renal artery after blunt *** SUMMARY During logging operations,a 66-year-old man experienced blunt force trauma after being injured by a fallen *** arrived at our trauma center with a left flank pain *** tomography(CT) revealed a pseudoaneurysm arising from the proximal renal artery(localized within the aortic media) and Stanford type A IMH.A covered stent was deployed along the left main renal artery,bridging the pseudoaneurysm and covering the parent artery,successfully excluding the pseudoaneurysm as confirmed using ***,although the degree of the pseudoaneurysm decreased,follow-up CT revealed remnant pseudoaneurysm,likely caused by an ***,a covered stent was additionally installed through the previously deployed covered *** exclusion of the pseudoaneurysm was confirmed using final *** the 7-mo follow-up CT scan,the IMH and pseudoaneurysm completely disappeared with no evidence of stent-related *** Endovascular treatment such as stent-graft placement can be an effective and safe treatment for traumatic renal artery injury.

Reactive oxygen species(ROS)are byproducts of cellular metabolism;they play a significant role as secondary messengers in cell *** cells,high concentrations of ROS induce apoptosis,senescence,and contact inhibition,while low concentrations of ROS result in angiogenesis,proliferation,and cytoskeleton ***,controlling ROS generation is an important factor in cell *** designed a chlorin e6(Ce6)-immobilized polyethylene terephthalate(PET)film(Ce6-PET)to produce extracellular ROS under red-light *** application of Ce6-PET films can regulate the generation of ROS by altering the intensity of light-emitting diode *** confirmed that the Ce6-PET film could effectively promote cell growth under irradiation at 500 μW/cm^(2) for 30 min in human umbilical vein endothelial *** also found that the Ce6-PET film is more efficient in generating ROS than a Ce6-incorporated polyurethane film under the same ***6-PET fabrication shows promise for improving the localized delivery of extracellular ROS and regulating ROS formation through the optimization of irradiation intensity.

Ionizing radiation is one of the most effective tools in cancer therapy. In a previous study, we reported that protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) inhibitors modulate the radiation responses in the human chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) cell line K562. The receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, genistein, delayed radiation-induced cell death, while non-recepter tyrosine kinase inhibitor, herbimycin A (HMA) enhances radiation-induced apoptosis. In this study, we focused on the modulation of radiation-induced cell death by genistein and performed PCR-select suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) to understand its molecular mechanism. We identified human thymidine kinase 1 (TK1), which is cell cycle regulatory gene and confirmed expression of TK1 mRNA by Northern blot analysis. Expression of TKl mRNA and TK1 enzymatic activity were parallel in their increase and decrease. TK1 is involved in G1-S phase transition of cell cycle progression. TonEBP expression is essential in the IL-1β–induced migration and invasion of human A549 lung cancer cells

Characteristics of and risk factors for colorectal neoplasms in young adults in a screening population

AIM: To investigate prevalence and risk factors for colorectal neoplasms in adults aged < 50 years, for whom screening is not ***: This cross-sectional study compared prevalence and characteristics of colorectal and advanced adenomas in patients aged < 50 years who underwent colonoscopy screening with subjects aged ≥ 50 years. To evaluate risk factors for colorectal and advanced adenoma in young adults, we used multivariable logistic regression models. Colorectal neoplasm characteristics were evaluated and compared with those in older ***: Among 2819 patients included, prevalences of colorectal adenoma and advanced adenoma were 19.7% and 1.5%, respectively. As patient age increased, so did the prevalence of colorectal neoplasm. However, prevalence of advanced adenoma did not differ between age-groups 45-49 years and ≥ 50 years(OR = 0.43, 95%CI: 0.17-1.07, P = 0.070). In younger age-group(< 50 years), colorectal adenoma was significantly associated with older age, waist circumference(OR = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.15-2.55, P = 0.008), and current smoking(OR = 1.60, 95%CI: 1.07-2.41, P = 0.023). Alcohol consumption was an independent risk factor for colorectal advanced adenoma(OR = 3.69, 95%CI: 1.08-12.54, P = 0.037). Multiple neoplasms and large neoplasms(≥ 1 cm) were more prevalent in subjects ≥ 50 ***: Current screening strategies for colorectal cancer may need to be amended to account for patient age, especially in young subjects with abdominal obesity, current smoking and alcohol consumption.

Efficient synthesis of IrPtPdNi/GO nanocatalysts for superior performance in water electrolysis

Traditional iridium (Ir) oxide catalysts have faced significant limitations in water electrolysis, particularly under acidic conditions where instability and degradation severely restrict the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To overcome these challenges, this study successfully synthesized highly dispersed IrPtPdNi alloy nanoparticles on a graphene oxide support using a vertically moving reactor, demonstrating exceptional performance in water electrolysis. These nanoparticles, synthesized via a fast-moving bed pyrolysis method, combine iridium, platinum, palladium, and nickel. They exhibit lower overpotentials in OER and comparable performance in HER to commercial catalysts, while also offering enhanced stability. These results surpass the limitations of traditional catalysts, marking significant progress toward more efficient and sustainable hydrogen production technologies. This advancement is expected to contribute significantly to the development of sustainable energy systems by innovatively enhancing the performance of catalysts in the electrochemical water-splitting process.
