Wave-Tide-Surge Coupled Simulation for Typhoon Maemi

The main task of this study focuses on studying the effect of wave-current interaction on currents, storm surge and wind wave as well as effects of current induced wave refraction and current on waves by using numerical models which consider the bottom boundary layer and sea surface roughness parameter for shallow and smooth bed area around Korean Peninsula. The coupled system （unstructured-mesh SWAN wave and ADCIRC） run on the same unstructured mesh. This identical and homogeneous mesh allows the physics of wave-circulation interactions to be correctly resolved in both models. The unstructured mesh can be applied to a large domain allowing all energy from deep to shallow waters to be seamlessly followed. There is no nesting or overlapping of structured wave meshes, and no interpolation is required. In response to typhoon Maemi （2003）, all model components were validated independently, and shown to provide a faithful representation of the system＇s response to this storm. The waves and storm surge were allowed to develop on the continental shelf and interact with the complex nearshore environment. The resulting modeling system can be used extensively for prediction of the typhoon surge. The result show that it is important to incorporate the wave-current interaction effect into coastal area in the wave-tide-surge coupled model. At the same time, it should consider effects of depth-induced wave breaking, wind field, currents and sea surface elevation in prediction of waves. Specially, we found that：（1） wave radiation stress enhanced the current and surge elevation otherwise wave enhanced nonlinear bottom boundary layer decreased that, （2） wind wave was significantly controlled by sea surface roughness thus we cautiously took the experimental expression. The resulting modeling system can be used for hindcasting （prediction） the wave-tide-surge coupled environments at complex coastline, shallow water and fine sediment area like areas around Korean Peninsula.

Simulation of Storm Surge and Wave Due to Typhoon Isewan(5915)

An integrally coupled wave-tide-surge model was developed and then applied to the simulation of the wave-typhoon surge for the typhoon Isewan （typhoon Vera （5915））, which is the strongest typhoon that has struck Japan and caused incalculable damage. An integrally coupled tide-surge-wave model using identical and homogeneous meshes in an unstructured grid system was used to correctly resolve the physics of wave-circulation interaction in both models. All model components were validated independently. The storm surge and wave properties such as the surge height, the significant wave height, wave period and direction were reproduced reasonably under the meteorological forcing, which was reprocessed to be close to the observations. The resulting modeling system can be used extensively for the prediction of the storm surge and waves and the usual barotropic forecast.

High-throughput volumetric adaptive optical imaging using compressed time-reversal matrix

Deep-tissue optical imaging suffers from the reduction of resolving power due to tissue-induced optical aberrations and multiple scattering *** matrix approaches recording the maps of backscattered waves for all the possible orthogonal input channels have provided formidable solutions for removing severe aberrations and recovering the ideal diffraction-limited spatial resolution without relying on fluorescence labeling and guide ***,measuring the full input–output response of the tissue specimen is time-consuming,making the real-time image acquisition ***,we present the use of a time-reversal matrix,instead of the reflection matrix,for fast high-resolution volumetric imaging of a mouse *** time-reversal matrix reduces two-way problem to one-way problem,which effectively relieves the requirement for the coverage of input *** a newly developed aberration correction algorithm designed for the time-reversal matrix,we demonstrated the correction of complex aberrations using as small as 2%of the complete basis while maintaining the image reconstruction fidelity comparable to the fully sampled reflection *** to nearly 100-fold reduction in the matrix recording time,we could achieve real-time aberration-correction imaging for a field of view of 40×40µm^(2)(176×176 pixels)at a frame rate of 80 ***,we demonstrated high-throughput volumetric adaptive optical imaging of a mouse brain by recording a volume of 128×128×125µm^(3)(568×568×125 voxels)in 3.58 s,correcting tissue aberrations at each and every 1µm depth section,and visualizing myelinated axons with a lateral resolution of 0.45µm and an axial resolution of 2µm.

Health risks of pest control and disinfection workers after the COVID-19 outbreak in South Korea

The exposure patterns of pest control and disinfection workers have changed after the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak,but the health risks of chemical exposure have not been *** identified these workers’chemical exposure patterns and risks before and after the COVID-19 *** used data conducted between 2018(pre-pandemic)and 2021(post-pandemic)from three-year cross-sectional surveys on pest control and disinfection *** and dermal exposure concentrations were estimated using equations based on a biocidal product risk assessment model from the Korean National Institute of Environmental *** non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of chemicals were calculated using the United States Environmental Protection Agency risk assessment *** found that the annual work frequency(50^(th)percentile)of foggers using disinfectants increased the most among all the work types,from 140 uses/year to 176 uses/year after the COVID-19 ***,all chemicals’non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks increased regardless of exposure *** the worst scenario(95^(th)percentile),the margin of exposure for citric acid,benzethonium chloride,benzyl-C12-16-alkyldimethyl chlorides,and sodium chlorite of inhalation exposure,and isopropyl alcohol and benzyl-C12-16-alkyldimethyl chlorides of dermal exposure were acceptable(>100)before the COVID-19outbreak but became unacceptable(10^(-6))before and after the COVID-19 outbreak but comparatively high after the COVID-19 ***,significantly more workers experienced health symptoms after the COVID-19outbreak(p<0.05),with the most common being muscle lethargy(31%),skin/face stinging(28.7%),and breath shortness/neck pain(24.1%).

BACKGROUND Cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)leakage at C1/2 in spontaneous intracranial hypotension(SIH)is *** hematoma(SDH),a serious complication of SIH,may lead to neurological *** report presents a case of SDH after spontaneous C1/2 CSF leakage,which was treated with a targeted epidural blood patch(EBP).CASE SUMMARY A 60-year-old man with no history of trauma was admitted to our hospital with orthostatic headache,nausea,and *** computed tomography imaging revealed bilateral,subacute to chronic *** magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)findings were SDH with dural enhancement in the bilateral cerebral convexity and posterior fossa and mild sagging,suggesting *** the patient underwent burr hole trephination,the patient’s orthostatic headache was *** myelography led to a suspicion of CSF leakage at C1/***,we performed a targeted cervical EBP using an epidural catheter under fluoroscopic *** 5 d after EBP,a follow-up MR myelography revealed a decrease in the interval size of the CSF *** his symptoms improved,the patient still complained of headaches;therefore,we repeated the targeted cervical EBP 6 d after the initial ***,his headache had almost disappeared on the 8th day after the repeated *** Targeted EBP is an effective treatment for SDH in patients with SIH due to CSF leakage at C1/2.

8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine:Not mere biomarker for oxidative stress,but remedy for oxidative stress-implicated gastrointestinal diseases

Reactive oxygen species （ROS） attack guanine bases in DNA easily and form 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine （8-OHdG）, which can bind to thymidine rather than cytosine, based on which, the level of 8-OHdG is gen- erally regarded as a biomarker of mutagenesis conse- quent to oxidative stress. For example, higher levels of 8-OHdG are noted in Helicobacter pylori-associated chronic atrophic gastritis as well as gastric cancer. However, we have found that exogenous 8-OHdG can paradoxically reduce ROS production, attenuate the nuclear factor-KB signaling pathway, and ameliorate the expression of proinflammatory mediators such as interleukin （IL）-I, IL-6, cyclo-oxygenase-2, and induc- ible nitric oxide synthase in addition to expression of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase （NOX）-I, NOX organizer-1 and NOX activator-1 in vari- ous conditions of inflammation-based gastrointestinal （GI） diseases including gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and even colitis-associated carci- nogenesis. Our recent finding that exogenous 8-OHdG was very effective in either inflammation-based or oxidative-stress-associated diseases of stress-related mucosal damage has inspired the hope that synthetic 8-OHdG can be a potential candidate for the treatment of inflammation-based GI diseases, as well as the pre- vention of inflammation-associated GI cancer. In this editorial review, the novel fact that exogenous 8-OHdG can be a functional molecule regulating oxidative- stress-induced gastritis through either antagonizing Rac-guanosine triphosphate binding or blocking the signals responsible for gastric inflammatory cascade is introduced.

Scalp Acupuncture for Parkinson's Disease:A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Objective： To evaluate the effectiveness of scalp acupuncture （SA）, a modern acupuncture technique specialized to neurological disorders, in managing motor function and symptoms for Parkinson＇s disease （PD） patients. Methods： Two independent reviewers extracted data from all of the randomized clinical trials （RCTs） that assessed the efficacy of SA for PD compared with conventional therapies （CTs）. Sixteen electronic databases were searched. The risk of bias was appraised with the Cochrane Collaboration tool, and the reporting of the included studies was evaluated by the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials （CONSORT） 2010 checklist and the revised Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture （STRICTA） guidelines. Results： In total, 4 RCTs met the inclusion criteria. As assessed by the Unified PD Rating Scale （UPDRS）, 2 RCTs showed that SA combined with CTs proved superior to CTs alone [60 cases; weighted mean difference, -3.94; 95% confidence interval （CI）, -6.05 to -1.64, P=0.01; 12=0%]. Based on the Webster scale, however, 3 RCTs showed no superior effect of SA when combined with CTs with high heterogeneity （154 cases; risk ratio, 1.29; 95% CI, 0.79 to 2.12, P=0.30; 12=84%）. The Cochrane risk of bias, adherence to the CONSORT and the STRICTA checklist showed that the quality of all the included RCTs was generally low. Conclusions： The result of our systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that the effectiveness of SA for PD is promising, however, the evidence is not convincing. A sham-controlled RCT design that adheres to the CONSORT and STRICTA guidelines to overcome methodological weakness and that includes a large sample size is strongly recommended to confirm the precise effect of SA on PD.

Enhancement of Au–Ag–Te contents in tellurium-bearing ore minerals via bioleaching

The purpose of this study was to enhance the content of valuable metals, such as Au, Ag, and Te, in tellurium-bearing minerals via bioleaching. The ore samples composed of invisible Au and Au paragenesis minerals(such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena) in combination with tellurium-bearing minerals(hessite, sylvanite and Tellurobismuthite) were studied. Indigenous microbes from mine drainage were isolated and identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, which were used in bioleaching after adaption to copper. The effect of the microbial adaption on the bioleaching performance was then compared with the results produced by the non-adaptive process. The microbial adaption enhanced the Au–Ag–Te contents in biological leaching of tellurium-bearing ore minerals. This suggests that bioleaching with adapted microbes can be used both as a pretreatment and in the main recovery processes of valuable metals.
