A translucent wooden substrate with long-lasting phosphorescence,high photostability and durability,tough surface,ultraviolet protection,high optical transmittance,and superhydrophobicity was *** long-lasting phosphorescent wooden substrate is able to continue emitting light for extended time ***-modified wood(LmW)was immobilized with a solution of epoxy resin(ER)and rare-earth doped aluminate(REDA)phosphor nanoparticles(NPs).For an improved dispersion of pigment,REDA was synthesized in a nanoscale particle size,and characterized by transmission electron microscopy(TEm)to indicate a particle size of 8-14 *** crystal structure of REDA nanoparticles was also proved by X-ray diffraction(XRD).For an improved production of long-persistent phosphorescent colo rless woods,REDA must be well-dispersed in mAA without *** and emissio n,as well as decay and lifetime spectra were *** morphologies of the wooden substrates with different ratios of REDA were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEm),X-ray fluorescence(XRF)analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectra(FT-IR),elemental mapping,and energy-dispersion Xray(EDXA).The phosphorescent woods show changes in color from colorless to green under ultraviolet(UV)irradiation,and to yellowish-green in the dark,as proved by the colorimetric parameters of the CIE Lab *** afterglow wood samples display an absorbance band at 365 nm and two phosphorescent bands at 431 and 520 *** UV shielding,photostability,and hydrophobicity were *** increasing REDA ratio,both static contact and slide angles are found to improve in the ranges of147.6°-163.6°and 9°-14°,*** long-lasting photoluminescence is optimized at a REDA ratio of 8%.The present strategy shows a large-scale production approach of multiple functional woods for many potential applications,such as smart glow in the dark windows and safety signs.

Vascular endothelial growth factor before and after locoregional treatment and its relation to treatment response in hepatocelluar carcinoma patients

Objective:To evaluate vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)levels in hepatocellular carcinoma patients before and after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization(TACE)and percutaneous ethanol injection(PEI)and its relation to treatment ***:A total of 40 patients with unrespectable hepatocelluar carcinoma were assessed *** patients were suitable to be treated by TACE,while other 20patients were treated with *** VEGF levels were measured before and 1 month after each procedure by *** was assessed after 1 month according to Union Internationale Contre le Cancer evaluation criteria based on change in tumor size as measured by ***:There was no significant difference between TACE and PEI groups with regard to age,sex,tumor size,response to local therapy,or VEGF and alpha-fetoprotein before and after *** levels after TACE were significantly higher than before TACE[(298.1±123.6)pg/m L vs.(205.8±307.3)pg/m L;P=0.001].Also,VEGF levels were significantly higher after PEI than before PEI[(333.8±365.6)pg/m L vs.(245.3±301.8)pg/m L;P=0.000].Non-responders of both groups had significantly high VEGF levels than responder's,both before[(985.0±113.2)pg/m L vs.(117.1±75.3)pg/m L;Pm L vs.(171.0±94.7)pg/m L;P=0.000)].Conclusions:Both TACE and PEI were associated with an increase in serum VEGF in hepatocelluar carcinoma *** levels of VEGF before and after therapy were found in non-responders,suggesting that VEGF is a useful marker in predicting treatment response.

Risk Assessment of mediterranean Sea Waters on Cooling System of Nuclear Power Plant

The study evaluated the impacts such as corrosion and scale formation which may result from, using the once-through pass cooling system of a suggested nuclear power at different selected coastal regions of Alexandria coast. (Abu-Qir, Sidi Kerrir, Estern Harbour, El max and Sidi Abd Elrhaman). The study had used The Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), which is a measure of a solution’s ability to dissolve or deposit calcium carbonate, which is often used as an indicator of the corrosivity of water. Like the Langelier saturation index, the Ryznar stability index (RSI) is also used to predicate the formation of scale and also the tendency for corrosion due to the concentration of calcium carbonate in the selected water system. Both of the two indexes ((LSI) and (RSI)) had been used to evaluate the internal environmental impact which may be occurred when used once-through pass system is as a cooling method of a coastal pressurized water reactor power plant. The study results showed that the calculated LSI and RSI values for selected regions indicated that, there was a low tendency for scale formation and possibility of corrosion at these selected study areas, so using nickel copper alloys in condenser is recommended to prevent any possibility of attack of corrosion besides the using of chemical treatment method of inlet cooling water system.

2-Aminocyclopenta[d]pyrimidines 3a-c were achieved via a one-pot, three-component reactions of cyclopentanone 1, aromatic aldehyde and guanidine hydrochloride （1：2：1 molar ratio）. Also, cyclization of 2,5-bis-（arylmethylidene）cyclopentanones 2 with guanidine hydrochloride （1：1 molar ratio） in methanol in the presence of sodium methoxide afforded cyclopenta-[d]pyrimidines 3. Soft coral Cespitularia stolonifera:New cytotoxic ceramides and gastroprotective activity

In the present study, a new ceramide, namely 2S, 3R-4E, 8E-2-(heptadecanoylamino)-heptadeca-4, 8-diene-1, 3-diol(1), along with four known steroids, including 24-methylcholesta-5, 24(28)-diene-3β-ol(2), 24-methylcholesta-5, 24(28)-diene-3β-acetate(3), 4-methyl-24-methylcholesta- 22-ene-3-ol(4), and cholesterol, was isolated and characterized from CH2Cl2/me OH extract of Cespitularia stolonifera. A new acetate derivative of compound 1, termed 2S, 3R-4E, 8E-2-(heptadecanoylamino)-heptadeca-4, 8-diene-1, 3-diacetate(1a), was also prepared in the present study. All the structures were established on the basis of modern spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, 1D, 2D-NmR, HRESI-mS, and GC-mS, in addition of chemical methods.(-)-Alloaromadendren, ledane,(1)-alloaromadendren oxide, isoaromadendrene epoxide and(-)-caryophellen oxide were identified from the n-hexane fraction using GC-mS. The extract and the two ceramides(1) and(1a) exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against lung cancer A549 cells, while the extract and the two steroids(2) and(3) exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against breast cancer mCF-7 cells. The CH_2Cl_2/meOH extract exhibited significant antiulcer activity in both ethanol and acetic acid induced ulcer models in rats, as evidenced by histopathological, histochemical, and biochemical examinations.

Role of Platelet Rich Plasma in Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare between the platelet rich plasma and balanced moist dressing as regards the healing rate in chronic non ischemic diabetic foot ulcers. Patients and method: From Feb. 2014 till may 2015, 73 patients from the attendees to Zagazig university hospitals were selected to our study. 2 groups were created, one for PRP (platelet rich plasma) and the other for balanced moist dressing. Frequent registration for the number of healed ulcers was done every week. Results: By the end of the 3rd week almost all the ulcers in the PRP group were healed. But the other group needed about 8th weeks for the same results. Conclusion: PRP seems to be an attractive choice in management of chronic diabetic ulcers provided that there is good blood supply and proper offloading was done.

STW 5 is effective against nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs induced gastro-duodenal lesions in rats

BACKGROUND Proton pump inhibitors are often used to prevent gastro-intestinal lesions induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory ***,they are not always effective against both gastric and duodenal lesions and their use is not devoid of side *** To explore the mechanisms mediating the clinical efficacy of STW 5 in gastroduodenal lesions induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs),exemplified here by diclofenac,in a comparison to *** Gastro-duodenal lesions were induced in rats by oral administration of diclofenac(5 mg/kg)for 6 successive *** group was given concurrently STW 5(5 mL/kg)while another was given omeprazole(20 mg/kg).A day later,animals were sacrificed,stomach and duodenum excised and divided into 2 segments:One for histological examination and one for measuring inflammatory mediators(tumor necrosis factorα,interleukins-1βand 10),oxidative stress enzyme(heme oxygenase-1)and apoptosis regulator(B-cell lymphoma 2).RESULTS Diclofenac caused overt histological damage in both tissues,associated with parallel changes in all parameters *** 5 and omeprazole effectively prevented these changes,but STW 5 superseded omeprazole in protecting against histological damage,particularly in the *** The findings support the therapeutic usefulness of STW 5 and its superiority over omeprazole as adjuvant therapy to NSAIDs to protect against their possible gastro-duodenal side effects.

Decoration of vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays with WO3 particles for hydrogen fuel production

WO3 decorated photoelectrodes of titanium nanotube arrays （W-oxide TNTAs） were synthesized via a two-step process, namely, electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil and electrodeposition of W-oxide for various interval times of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 20 min to improve the photoelectrochemical performance and the amount of hydrogen generated. The synthesized photoelectrodes were characterized by various characterization techniques. The presence of tungsten in the modified TNTAs was confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDX）. Field emission scanning electron microscopy （FESEm） and high resolution transmission electron microscope （HRTEm） proved the deposition of W-oxide as small particles staked up on the surface of the tubes at lower deposition time whereas longer times produced large and aggregate particles to mostly cover the surface of TiO2 nanotubes. Additionally, the incorporation of WO3 resulted in a shift of the absorption edge toward visible light as confirmed by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and a decrease in the estimated band gap energy values hence, modified TNTAs facilitated a more efficient utilization of solar light for water splitting. From the photoelectrochemical measurement data, the optimal photoelectrode produced after 2 min of deposition time improved the photo conversion efficiency and the hydrogen generation by 30% compared to that of the pure TNTA.
