Double-antibody-based nano-biosensing systemfor the onsite monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 variants

The fast and reliable diagnosis of COVID-19 is the foremost priority for promoting public health ***, double-antibody-based immunobiosensor chips were designed, constructed, and exploited for clinicaldiagnosis. Gold nanoparticles/tungsten oxide/carbon nanotubes (AuNPs/WO3/CNTs) were used as the active workingsensor surface to support the chemical immobilization of a mixture of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies (anti-RBD-S and anti-RBD-S-anti-Llama monoclonal antibodies). The morphology and chemical functionalization of the fabricateddisposable immunochips was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). After full assayoptimization, the immunobiosensor showed a high sensitivity to detect SARS-CoV-2-S protein with limits of detectionand quantification of 1.8 and 5.6 pg/mL, respectively. On the other hand, for the SARS-CoV-2 whole virus particleanalysis, the detection and quantification limits were determined to be 5.7 and 17 pg/mL, respectively. The biosensorshowed a highly selective response toward SARS-CoV-2, even in the presence of influenza, nontargeting humancoronaviruses, and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The immunochips exhibited distinctresponses toward the variants of concern: B.1>C.36.3>Omicron> Delta> Alpha coronavirus variants. For biosensorvalidation, twenty-nine clinical specimens were analyzed, and the impedimetric responses were positively detected fortwo Delta samples, eighteen Omicron samples, and six B.1-type samples in addition to three negative ***, the immunobiosensor was fabricated in the form of ready-to-use chips capable of sensitive detection ofvirus variants, especially variants of concern (VOC) and interest, in a specimen within 15 min. The cornea is maintained in an avascular state by maintaining an environment whereby anti-angiogenic factors take the upper hand over factors promoting angiogenesis. Many of the common pathologies affecting the cornea involve the disruption of such equilibrium and the shift towards new vessel formation, leading to corneal opacity and eventually-vision loss. Therefore it is of paramount importance that the molecular underpinnings of corneal neovascularization（CNV） be clearly understood, in order to develop better targeted treatments. This article is a review of the literature on the recent discoveries regarding pro-angiogenic factors of the cornea（such as vascular endothelial growth factors,fibroblast growth factor and matrix metalloproteinases）and anti-angiogenic factors of the cornea（such as endostatins and neostatins）. Further, we review the molecular underpinnings of lymphangiogenesis, a process now known to be almost separate from（yet related to） hemangiogenesis.

A large subset of corneal pathologies involves the formation of new vessels(neovascularization), leading to compromised visual acuity. This article aims to review the clinical causes and presentations of corneal neovascularization(CNV) by examining the mechanisms behind common CNV-related corneal pathologies, with a particular focus on herpes simplex stromal keratitis,contact lenses-induced keratitis and CNV secondary to keratoplasty. Moreover, we reviewed CNV in the context of different types of corneal transplantation and keratoprosthesis, and summarized the most relevant treatment available so far.

Determinants of Schistosoma mansoni transmission in hotspots at the late stage of elimination in Egypt

Background In certain settings,the prevalence and severity of schistosoma infection do not lessen despite repeated rounds of preventative chemotherapy;these areas are known as *** study aimed to investigate the role of human practices,besides environmental and malacological factors,in the maintenance of the Schistosoma mansoni infection transmission chain in hotspot areas in *** This cross-sectional study was conducted between July and November 2019 in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate,Egypt.A pre-designed structured interviewing questionnaire was used to collect humanitarian *** samples were collected from children aged 6–15 years on three successive days and examined using the Kato-Katz ***,water and snail samples were taken from watercourses surrounding *** were identified based on their shell morphology and structure and tested for cercaria *** samples were analyzed for their physicochemical and biological *** A total of 2259 fecal samples(1113 in summer and 1146 in fall)were collected from 861 *** 46.9%of the participants were males,and 31.8%were aged 6–10 *** prevalence of *** infection was higher during the summer than during the fall(19.1%vs 7.2%,respectively,P<0.01).The intensity of infection(light,moderate,and heavy)during summer versus fall was(93.55 vs 89.38%,6.45 vs 8.85%,and 0.00%vs 1.77%),respectively(P<0.05).A higher prevalence of human infection was observed among males than females[OR=1.63,95%confidence interval(CI):1.10–2.40,P=0.015],children aged 11–15 years than among their counterparts aged 6–10 years(OR=2.96,95%CI:1.72–5.06,P<0.001),and mothers with a low level of education(OR=3.33,95%CI:1.70–6.52,P<0.001).The main identified risk factors were contacting the main body of water-canal for washing clothes(OR=1.81,95%CI:1.12–2.49,P=0.015),land irrigation(OR=2.56,95%CI:1.32–4.96,P=0.004),water collection(OR=2.94,95%CI:1.82–4.73,P<0.001),bathing(

Barrett's esophagus:Prevalence and risk factors in patients with chronic GERD in Upper Egypt

AIM:To determine the prevalence and possible risk factors of Barrett's esophagus(BE) in patients with chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) in El Minya and Assuit, Upper ***:One thousand consecutive patients with chronic GERD symptoms were included in the study over 2 *** were subjected to history taking including a questionnaire for GERD symptoms, clinical examination and upper digestive tract *** signs suggestive of columnar-lined esophagus(CLE) were defined as mucosal tongues or an upward shift of the squamocolumnar *** was diagnosed by pathological examination when specialized intestinal metaplasia was detected histologically in suspected *** was monitored in 40 ***:BE was present in 7.3% of patients with chronic GERD symptoms, with a mean age of 48.3 ± 8.2 years, which was signif icantly higher than patients with GERD without BE(37.4 ± 13.6 years).Adenocarcinomawas detected in eight cases(0.8%), six of them in BE *** was no signiflcant difference between patients with BE and GERD regarding sex, smoking, alcohol consumption or symptoms of *** with BE had significantly longer esophageal acid exposure time in the supine position, measured by pH ***:The prevalence of BE in patients with GERD who were referred for endoscopy was 7.3%.BE seems to be associated with older age and more in patients with nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux.

BACKGROUND Pancreatic cystic lesions(PCLs) are common in clinical practice. The accurate classification and diagnosis of these lesions are crucial to avoid unnecessary treatment of benign lesions and missed opportunities for early treatment of potentially malignant *** To evaluate the role of cyst fluid analysis of different tumor markers such as cancer antigens [e.g., cancer antigen(CA)19-9, CA72-4], carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA), serine protease inhibitor Kazal-type 1(SPINK1), interleukin 1 beta(IL1-β), vascular endothelial growth factor A(VEGF-A), and prostaglandin E2(PGE2)], amylase, and mucin stain in diagnosing pancreatic cysts and differentiating malignant from benign *** This study included 76 patients diagnosed with PCLs using different imaging modalities. All patients underwent endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) and EUS-fine needle aspiration(EUS-FNA) for characterization and sampling of different *** The mean age of studied patients was 47.4 ± 11.4 years, with a slight female predominance(59.2%). Mucin stain showed high statistical significance in predicting malignancy with a sensitivity of 87.1% and specificity of 95.56%. It also showed a positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 93.1% and 91.49%, respectively(P < 0.001). We found that positive mucin stain, cyst fluid glucose, SPINK1, amylase, and CEA levels had high statistical significance(P < 0.0001). In contrast, IL-1β, CA 72-4, VEGF-A, VEGFR2, and PGE2 did not show any statistical significance. Univariate regression analysis for prediction of malignancy in PCLs showed a statistically significant positive correlation with mural nodules, lymph nodes, cyst diameter, mucin stain, and cyst fluid CEA.
