BACKGROUND Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASlD)and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis(MASH)are a growing health burden across a significant portion of the global patient ***,these conditions seem to have disparate rates and outcomes between different ethnic *** combination of MASlD/MASH and type 2 diabetes increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),and Hispanic patients experience the greatest burden,particularly those in South *** To compare outcomes between Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients in the United States,while further focusing on the Hispanic population within Southeast Texas to determine whether the documented disparity in outcomes is a function of geographical circumstance or if there is a more widespread reason that all clinicians must account for in prognostic *** This cohort analysis was conducted with data obtained from TriNetX,llC(“TriNetX”),a global federated health research network that provides access to deidentified medical records from healthcare organizations *** cohort networks were used:University of Texas Medical Branch(UTMB)hospital and the United States national database collective to determine whether disparities were related to geographic regions,like Southeast *** This study findings revealed Hispanics/latinos have a statistically significant higher occurrence of HCC,type 2 diabetes mellitus,and liver fibrosis/cirrhosis in both the United States and the UTMB Hispanic/latino *** mortality in Hispanics/latinos was lower within the United States group and not statistically elevated in the UTMB *** This would appear to support that Hispanic patients in Southeast Texas are not uniquely affected compared to the national Hispanic population.

The natural history,associations with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),and long-term outcomes of large duct primary sclerosing cholangitis(ldPSC)have been well *** duct primary sclerosing cholangitis(sdPSC)is a much less common and relatively more benign *** natural history of sdPSC has been difficult to characterize given the limited number of studies in the literature especially with regards to the subset of patients who progress to large duct *** has been unclear whether sdPSC represented a subset of ldPSC,an earlier staging of ldPSC,or a completely separate and distinct entity of its *** associations between sdPSC and IBD have been established with suspicion that concurrent sdPSC-IBD may be a key prognostic factor in determining which patients are at risk of progression to *** is known regarding the discrete circumstances that predisposes some patients with sdPSC to progress to *** has been suspected that progression to large biliary duct involvement subjects this subset of patients to potentially developing lifethreatening *** the authors conducted a thorough review of the published sdPSC literature using Pubmed searches and cross-referencing to compile all accessible studies regarding cohorts of sdPSC patients in order better characterize the subset of sdPSC patients who progress to ldPSC and the associated outcomes.

Postphalloplasty urinary function test:an observational study of novel outcome instrument to capture urinary dysfunction and quality of life after phalloplasty

Due to growing social acceptance,there has been an increasing number of gender-affirmation surgeries performed in North *** research in this patient population focuses on surgical outcomes and advancing ***,little work has been done to study functional *** better evaluate urinary dysfunction in the postphalloplasty trans men patient population,our group developed a novel patient-reported outcome instrument-the postphalloplasty urinary function test(PP UFT)and protocol to measure postvoid urethral volume(PVUR),and we present our preliminary *** conducted a cross-sectional pilot study in a cohort of 15 adult trans men who had undergone phalloplasty with urethral lengthening surgery between 2018 and *** had stable urinary function via the neophallus at the time of *** filled out the PP UFT and were asked to record their PVUR as per our *** average PP UFT score was 8.9 out of 40 and the average quality-of-life(QOl)score was *** dribbling constituted the major complaint and on average comprised 63.2%of the reported PP UFT *** average PVUR was 2.2 ml(range:0.5-5.6 ml).There was a positive correlation between higher PP UFT and worse-reported quality of life(Ple urology have limitations for accurately capturing urinary dysfunction in this specific patient *** combination of PP UFT and PVUR measurement offers potential for quantifying urinary function and quality of life in patients who undergo *** studies will validate these instruments.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most frequent primary liver tumor worldwide and,despite regional therapeutic and diagnostic differences,it stands among the three most lethal cancers found in *** or ablative treatments,together with liver transplant,are the most successful clinical approaches,frequently ensuring complete HCC healing and the best survival ***,curative techniques are applicable only in patients at early stages of the disease(limits:one nodule≤5 cm in diameter or not more than three nodules all less than 3 cm in diameter).1 A significant percentage of HCC patients(≥50%)have a more advanced stage at diagnosis and must rely on less effective treatment or palliative care,thus signifying the need for alternative systemic ***,a tyrosine kinase inhibitor(TKI)was the first effective HCC drug treatment discovered after negative results were obtained with canonical cytotoxic *** 2018 lenvatinib,another TKI,was approved in the USA as a first line treatment for *** immunotherapy combining the checkpoint inhibitor,atezolizumab with the VEGF-antibody bevacizumab,has improved survival rates compared with previous TKI-based monotherapies.2 Despite treatment improvements,1-year survival is attained by only two-thirds of patients,thus prompting investigation of more effective therapies for advanced stage HCC.

Quiet in the nest:The nest environment attenuates song in a grassland songbird

The nest environment may limit the ability of nest-bound birds to hear sounds from the outside *** vocal learning species,such as humans and songbirds,it is vital for young animals to hear the voices of conspecific animals early in *** songbirds,nest structure varies considerably across species,and the resulting impact on sound transmission may have consequences for vocal learning in *** this study,we tested the hypothesis that the nest environment attenuates song of Savannah Sparrows(Passerculus sandwichensis),grassland songbirds that build nests on the ground under cover of dense *** recorded live Savannah Sparrows singing at variable distances from 21 *** recorded songs using one microphone inside the nest(the typical position of a nestling)and another placed 1 m directly above the nest(a typical position of an adult).We found a substantial reduction in signal-to-noise ratio,where songs recorded inside the nest were an average of 11 dB lower than songs recorded directly above the *** estimate that the attenuation imposed by the nest reduced the maximum acoustic environment from 117.7 m(for recordings above the nest),to 78.6 m(for recordings within the nest),which is analogous to listening from a position 39.1 m farther away from the *** research estimated that song transmits up to 100 m in this species,so any adult male within 100 m of a young bird was previously considered a potential vocal *** reducing the nestling acoustic environment from 100 m to 78.6 m,the number of male tutors available to nestlings is reduced by an average of 27%.Given the growing evidence that song learning begins very early in life,future research on vocal development should account for how the structural properties of the natal environment affect the songs that nestlings hear.

Dear Editor,We have read with great interest the outstanding article authored by Amparore et al.[1].We commend the authors for their large interventional study of 222 patients observing a favorable impact on clinical outcomes after implementation of three-dimensional(3D)modeling for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy robotically assisted or not,compared to a historical group of *** authors presented convincing results and humbly acknowledge limitations of the study,notably its *** results extend growing awareness in urology that 3D modeling can enhance surgeons’case planning[2].

An examination of the population dynamics of syngnathid fishes within Tampa Bay,Florida,USA

Seagrass ecosystems worldwide have been declining, leading to a decrease in associated fish populations, especiallythose with low mobility such as syngnathids (pipefish and seahorses). This two-year pilot study investigated seasonal patterns indensity, growth, site fidelity, and population dynamics of Tampa Bay (Fl) syngnathid fishes at a site adjacent to two marinas underconstruction. Using a modified mark-recapture technique, fish were collected periodically from three closely located sites thatvaried in seagrass species (Thalassia spp., Syringodium spp., and mixed-grass sites) and their distance from open water, but hadconsistent physical/chemical environmental characteristics. Fish were marked, photographed for body size and gender measurements,and released the same day at the capture site. Of the 5695 individuals surveyed, 49 individuals were recaptured, indicatinga large, flexible population. Population density peaks were observed in July of both years, with low densities in late winter andlate summer. Spatially, syngnathid densities were highest closest to the mouth of the bay and lowest near the shoreline. Sevenspecies of syngnathid fishes were observed, and species-specific patterns of seagrass use emerged during the study. However,only two species, Syngnathus scovelli and Hippocampus zosterae, were observed at high frequencies. For these two species, bodysize decreased across the study period, but while S. scovelli's population density decreased, H. zosterae's increased. Across six ofthe seven species, population size declined over the course of this preliminary study; however, seasonal shifts were impossible todistinguish from potential anthropogenic effects of

Radiation-Induced Chromosome Instability in WTK1 and TK6 Human lymphoblastoid Cells

The effects of ionizing radiation on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) copy number variations between TK6 and WTK1 cell lines are described herein. Specifically, the integrity of the chromosomes for two WIl2-derived lymphoblastoid cell lines (TK6 and WTK1) was analyzed in the presence and absence of ionizing radiation. WTK1 cells contain a p53 mutation, whereas the TK6 cell line has the native p53 tumor-suppressor gene. Each cell line was isolated post-irradiation for SNP analysis, which showed significant, genome-wide impacts on both cell lines;for the mutant WTK1 sample, there were a total of 48 gene deletions and no gene amplifications, whereas for the wild-type TK6 sample, there were 217 gene deletions and 9 gene amplifications. It appears that both cell lines are affected in the areas of cell-cycle control, but that other affected areas differ significantly between the two.

The importance of non-carbonate mineral weathering as a soil formation mechanism within a karst weathering profile in the SPECTRA Critical Zone Observatory, Guizhou Province,China

Soil degradation, including rocky desertification,of the karst regions in China is severe. Karst landscapes are especially sensitive to soil degradation as carbonate rocks are nutrient-poor and easily eroded. Understanding the balance between soil formation and soil erosion is critical for long-term soil sustainability, yet little is known about the initial soil forming processes on karst terrain. Herein we examine the initial weathering processes of several types of carbonate bedrock containing varying amounts of non-carbonate minerals in the SPECTRA Critical Zone Observatory, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. We compared the weathering mechanisms of the bedrock to the mass transfer of mineral nutrients in a soil profile developed on these rocks and found that soil formation and nutrient contents are strongly dependent upon the weathering of interbedded layers of more silicate-rich bedrock(marls). Atmospheric inputs from dust were also detected.
