Purpose The Farmer’s Walk(FW)may supplement resistance training through functional tasks like lifting and carrying weight over various *** information exists concerning the intramuscular responses resulting from FW per-formance,possibly impacting its application in exercise ***,the purpose of the study was to investigate Creatine Kinase(CK)and myoglobin(Mb)responses following the Farmers Walk Condition(FWC)compared to a control protocol(NWC).Methods Fifteen participants(Mean±SeM;age:21.6±0.5 years;height:172.5±2.4 cm;body weight:81.8±4.0 kg)completed an initial session to measure body composition,lower body power,and *** then completed two counter-balanced exercise protocols consisting of a 20-m walk performed within 5 sets of 2 repetitions while either carrying weight(FWC;average wt:85.15±25.55 kg)or not(NWC)with collection of Visually Perceived Muscle Soreness(VPMS),Ratings of Perceived exertion(RPe),and blood ***,blood samples,and Countermovement Jump(CMJ)height were also collected during recovery from each exercise protocol with significance of Perences were observed between exercise protocols performed including participant RPe(Perall,upper body,and lower body VPMS(Perences were noted for Mb or CMJ *** Training variables implemented during the FWC may have indirectly minimized muscle damage and neuro-muscular inhibitions in *** participants reported mild soreness,the negligible physiological damage suggests the FWC is a safe and appropriate functional movement exercise.

Dynamic failures, or ‘‘bumps", remain an imperative safety concern in underground coal mining, despite significant advancements in engineering controls. The presence of spatially discrete, stiff roof units are one feature that has been linked to these events. However, an empirical stratigraphic review indicates that no significant difference exists in the relative commonality of discrete units between bumping and non-bumping deposits. Instead an apparent relationship exists between reportable bumping and the overall stiffness of the host rock. However, this initial study is too simplistic to be conclusive; to weight the relative impact of changes in a single variable, such as the thickness or location of sandstone members, it must be examined in isolation—i.e., in a setting where all other variables are held *** modelling provides this setting, and the effects of variability in a stiff discrete member in a hypothetical longwall mining scenario are investigated within the context of three stratigraphic ‘‘types",Compliant, Intermediate and Stiff. A modelling experiment examines changes in rupture potential in stiff roof units for each stratigraphic type as discrete unit thickness and location are manipulated through a range of values. Results suggest that the stiff-to-compliant ratio of the host rock has an impact on the relative stress-inducing effects of discrete stiff members. In other words, it is necessary to consider both the thickness and the distance to the seam, within the context of the host rock, to accurately anticipate areas of elevated rupture-induced hazard; acknowledging the presence of a discrete unit within the overburden in general terms is an insufficient indicator of risk. This finding helps to refine our understanding of the role of individual stiff, strong roof members in bumping phenomena, and suggests that a holistic view of overburden lithology and site-specific numerical modelling may be necessary to improve miner safety.

Applying robust design to study the effects of stratigraphic characteristics on brittle failure and bump potential in a coal mine

Comparison of cross sectional optical coherence tomography images of elevated optic nerve heads across acquisition devices and scan protocols

Background:Optic nerve head measurements extracted from optical coherence tomography(OCT)show promise for monitoring clinical conditions with elevated optic nerve *** aim of this study is to compare reliability within and between raters and between image acquisition devices of optic nerve measurements derived from OCT scans in eyes with varying degrees of optic nerve ***:Wide angle line scans and narrow angle radial scans through optic nerve heads were obtained using three spectral domain(SD)OCT devices on 5 subjects(6 swollen optic nerves,4 normal optic nerves).Three raters independently semi-manually segmented the internal limiting membrane(ILM)and Bruch’s membrane(BM)on each scan using customized *** rater segmented each scan *** were qualitatively and quantitatively ***-rater,intra-rater and inter-device reliability was assessed for the optic nerve cross sectional area calculated from the ILM and BM segmentations using intraclass correlation coefficients and graphical ***:Line scans from all devices were qualitatively *** scans for which frame rate could not be adjusted were of lower ***-rater reliability for segmentation and optic nerve cross sectional area was better than inter-rater reliability,which was better than inter-device reliability,though all ICC exceeded *** was not impacted by the degree of optic nerve ***:SD-OCT devices acquired similar quality scans of the optic nerve head,with choice of scan protocol affecting the *** image derived markers,variability between devices was greater than that attributable to inter and intra-rater differences.

Building Momentum to Realign Incentives to Support Open Science

The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the urgent need to strengthen global scientific collaboration,and to ensure the fundamental right to universal access to scientific progress and its *** Science(OS)is central to achieving these *** aims to make science accessible,transparent,and effective by providing barrier-free access to scientific publications,data,and infrastructures,along with open software,Open educational Resources,and open *** also promotes public trust in science at a time when it has never been more important to do *** the past decade,momentum towards the widespread adoption of OS practices has been primarily driven by declarations(e.g.,DORA,the Leiden Manifesto).These serve an important role,but for OS to truly take root,researchers also must be fully incentivized and rewarded for its *** requires research funders and academic leaders to take the lead in collaborating,with researchers in designing,and implementing new incentive structures,and to actively work to socialize these throughout the research *** US National Academies of Science,engineering,and Medicine(NASeM)Roundtable on Aligning Research Incentives for OS is one such *** paper examines the strategy behind convening the Roundtable,its current participant makeup,focus,and *** also explores how this approach might be expanded and adapted throughout the global OS community.

A method for quantifying bias in modeled concentrations and source impacts for secondary particulate matter

Community Multi-Scale Air Quality （CMAQ） estimates of sulfates, nitrates, ammonium, and organic carbon are highly influenced by uncertainties in modeled secondary formation processes, such as chemical mechanisms, volatilization, and condensation rates. These compounds constitute the majority ofPM2.5 mass, and reducing bias in estimated concentrations has benefits for policy measures and epidemiological studies. In this work, a method for adjusting source impacts on secondary species is developed that provides estimates of source contributions and reduces bias in modeled concentrations compared to observations. The bias correction adjusts concentrations and source impacts based on the difference between modeled concentrations and observations while taking into account uncertainties at the location of interest; and it is applied both spatially and temporally. We apply the method over the US for 2006. The mean bias for initial CMAQ concentrations compared to observations is -0.28 （OC）, 0.11 （NO3）, 0.05 （NH4）, and -0.08 （SO4）. The normalized mean bias in modeled concentrations compared to observations was effectively zero for OC, NO3, NH4, and SO4 after applying the secondary bias correction. Ten-fold cross-validation was conducted to determine the performance of the spatial application of the bias correction. Cross-validation performance was favorable; correlation coefficients were greater than 0.69 for all species when comparing observations and concentrations based on kriged correction factors. The methods presented here address model uncertainties by improving simulated concentrations and source impacts of secondary particulate matter through data assimilation. Secondary-adjusted concentrations and source impacts from 20 emissions sources are generated for 2006 over continental US.

This contribution describes development and application of a user-friendly finite element program,UT3PC, to address three important problems in underground coal mine design:(1) safety of main entries,(2) barrier pillar size needed for entry protection, and(3) safety of bleeder entries during the advance of an adjacent longwall *** the finite element method is by far the most popular engineering design tool of the digital age, widespread use by the mining community has been impeded by the relatively high cost of and the need for lengthy specialized training in numerical *** of UT3PC overcomes these impediments in three easy ***, a material properties file is prepared for the considered ***, mesh generation is automatic through an interactive process.A third and last step is simply execution of the *** using data from several western coal mines illustrate the ease of using the application for analysis of main entries, barrier pillars, and bleeder entry safety.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension(IIH)is a condition in which elevated pressure in the cerebrospinal fluid can lead to optic nerve head(ONH)dysfunction and subsequent visual *** are currently limited in their ability to monitor and manage this condition,as clinical symptoms and exam findings are often delayed in response to changes in intracranial *** order to find other biomarkers of disease,researchers are using imaging modalities such as optical coherence tomography(OCT)to observe microscopic changes in the eye in this *** can create 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional high definition images of the retina of the ONH and has been used to study various conditions such as glaucoma and multiple *** studies have used OCT in IIH as well,and they have shown that certain retinal layers and the ONH change in thickness and shape in both the short and long term with intracranial pressure *** is a promising modality for clinical and scientific evaluation of IIH as it is a noninvasive and practical tool to obtain in depth *** review will discuss how OCT can be used to assess a patient with IIH,both before and after treatment,along with its limitations and future applications.

Systemic RNAi in western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, does not involve transitive pathways

Western corn rootworm （WCR, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte） is highly sensitive to orally delivered double-stranded RNA （dsRNA）. RNAi in WCR is systemic and spreads throughout the insect body. This raises the question whether transitive RNAi is a mechanism that functions in WCR to amplify the RNAi response via production of secondary siRNA. Secondary siRNA production is achieved through RNA-dependent RNA polymerase （RdRP） activity in other eukaryotic organisms, but RdRP has not been identified in WCR and any other insects. This study visualized the spread of the RNAi- mediated knockdown of Dr v-ATPase C mRNA throughout the WCR gut and other tissues using high-sensitivity branched DNA in situ hybridization. Furthermore, we did not detect either secondary siRNA production or transitive RNAi in WCR through siRNA sequence profile analysis. Nucleotide mismatched sequences introduced into either the sense or antisense strand of v-ATPase C dsRNAs were maintained in siRNAs derived from WCR fed with the mismatched dsRNAs in a strand specific manner. The distribution of all siRNAs was restricted to within the original target sequence regions, which may indicate the lack of new dsRNA synthesis leading to production of secondary siRNA. Thus, the systemic spread of RNAi in WCR may be derived from the original dsRNA molecules taken up from the gut lumen. These results indicate that the initial dsRNA dose is important for a lethal systemic RNAi response in WCR and have implications in developing effective dsRNA traits to control WCR and in resistance management to prolong the durability of RNAi trait technology.

A rationale for the development of thermally stable nanostructured CeO_2-ZrO_2-containing mixed oxides

CeO2-ZeO2 solid solutions are extensively used as oxygen storage promoters in the current automotive three-way catalysts. High thermal stability of the textural properties is one of the most important requirements for practical application since temperatures up to 1273 K are easily experienced by these materials under real working conditions. In the present paper, we investigated how hydrothermal treatments applied to cakes of doped and undoped ZrO2-rich CeO2-ZrO2 precursors might improve the thermal stability of the final CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution. A rationale was developed that allowed to correlate the morphology of the hydrothermaUy treated cake with the thermal stability at 1273 K of the final product, which did not depend on the composition of the mixed oxides.
