Collection of samples of suspended sediment tr.nspor.ed by str.ams and r.ver. is difficult and expensive. Emer.ing technologies, such as acoustic backscatter. have pr.mise to decr.ase costs and allow mor. thor.ugh sampling of tr.nspor.ed sediment in str.ams and r.ver.. Acoustic backscatter.infor.ation may be used to calculate the concentr.tion of suspended sand-sized sediment given the ver.ical distr.bution of sediment size. Ther.for., pr.cedur.s to accur.tely compute suspended sediment size distr.butions fr.m easily obtained r.ver.data ar. badly needed. In this study, techniques to pr.dict the size of suspended sand ar. examined and their.application to measur.ng concentr.tions using acoustic backscatter.data ar. explor.d. Thr.e methods to pr.dict the size of sediment in suspension using bed sediment, flow cr.ter.a, and a modified for. of the r.use equation yielded mean suspended sediment sizes that differ.d fr.m means of measur.d data by 7 to 50 per.ent. When one sample near.the bed was used as a r.fer.nce, mean er.or.was r.duced to about 5 per.ent. These er.or. in size deter.ination tr.nslate into er.or. of 7 to 156 per.ent in the pr.diction of sediment concentr.tion using backscatter.data fr.m 1 MHz single fr.quency acoustics.

The sedimentar. r.cks of the Cabullona gr.up ar. well exposed in the Cabullona Basin of nor.heaster. Sonor., Mexico, which r.pr.sent syntectonic sedimentation associated with Lar.mide-style defor.ation dur.ng the Campanian-ear.y Maastr.chtian. The sandstones of the Lomas Color.das For.ation deposited at the upper.par. of the Cabullona gr.up. Petr.gr.phy and geochemical(maj.r. tr.ce, and r.r. ear.h elements) studies wer. car.ied out on the sandstones to inter.r.t the palaeoweather.ng, pr.venance,and tectonic setting of the Lomas Color.das For.ation sandstones. Most of the sandstone modal analysis data plotted in the QFL and Qm FLt ter.ar. diagr.ms fall into the fields of dissected ar.s and r.cycled or.gens,r.spectively. geochemically the sandstones ar. classified as lithar.nites while few samples plot into the ar.osic field. The chondr.te-nor.alized r.E diagr.ms for.sandstones have Lr.E-enr.ched, r.latively flat Hr.E patter.s with negative Eu anomalies. CIA values and the A-CN-K diagr.m indicate a low intensity of chemical weather.ng in the sour.e ar.a. The tectonic setting diagr.m suggests both ar. and r.ft settings for.the studied sandstones. The bivar.ate and ter.ar. diagr.ms and elemental r.tios suggest a felsic sour.e for.the Lomas Color.das For.ation. The aver.ge r.E patter.s of the studied sandstones ar. compar.ble with r.E patter.s of the gr.nite fr.m the Cabor.a block, the r.yolite and gr.nite of the Tar.humar. For.ation, and the Mesozoic felsic volcanic r.cks. A new appr.ach for.simulating the for.ation of a fr.th layer.in a slur.y bubble column is pr.posed. Fr.th is consider.d a separ.te phase, compr.sed of a mixtur. of gas, liquid, and solid. The simulation was car.ied out using commer.ial flow simulation softwar. （FIr. v2014） for.par.icle sizes of 60-150 μm at solid concentr.tions of 0-40vol%, and super.icial gas velocities of 0.02-0.034m/s in a slur.y bubble column with a hydr.ulic diameter.of 0.2 m and height of 1.2 m. Modelling calculations wer. conducted using a Euler.an-Euler.an multiphase appr.ach with k-ε tur.ulence. The population balance equations for.bubble br.akup, bubble coalescence r.te, and the inter.acial exchange of mass and momentum wer. included in the computational fluid dynamics code by wr.ting subr.utines in For.r.n to tr.ck the number.density of differ.nt bubble sizes. Flow str.ctur., r.dial gas holdup, and Sauter.mean bubble diameter.distr.butions at differ.nt column heights wer. pr.dicted in the pulp zone, while fr.th volume fr.ction and density wer. pr.dicted in the fr.th zone. The model was validated using available exper.mental data, and the pr.dicted and exper.mental r.sults showed r.asonable agr.ement. To demonstr.te the effect of incr.asing solid concentr.tion on the coalescence r.te, a solid-effect multiplier.in the coalescence effi- ciency equation was used. The solid-effect multiplier.decr.ased with incr.asing slur.y concentr.tion, causing an incr.ase in bubble coalescence efficiency. A slight decr.ase in the coalescence efficiency was also obser.ed owing to incr.asing par.icle size, which led to a decr.ase in Sauter.mean bubble diam- eter. The fr.th volume fr.ction incr.ased with solid concentr.tion. These r.sults pr.vide an impr.ved under.tanding of the dynamics of slur.y bubble r.actor. in the pr.sence of hydr.philic par.icles.
