The alarming water and energy crisis in many regions of the world can be eased by combining renewable energy with desalination technologies. The ADIRA project funded by the EU looked for demonstrating the feasibility of water desalination in areas around the Mediterranean by installing a number of autonomous desalination systems (ADS) which are able to convert brackish or seawater into potable water for the needs of small communities. Within the activities of the ADIRA project a reverse osmosis unit powered by photovoltaic electricity was installed in a village in the northern part of Jordan with a capacity of 0.5 m3/day. The system was composed of a softener, reverse osmosis unit, PV panels (432 Wp) and storage batteries. Residential type “OSMONICS” membrane (TFM-100) was utilized in the RO unit. Field tests were performed on brackish water (1700 mg/L total dissolved solids (TDS)). This paper sheds the light on the process flow diagram, sizing of the system main components and presents some of the results obtained.

A lumped-parameter nonlinear spring-mass model which takes into account the third-order elastic stiffness constant is considered for modeling the free and forced axial vibrations of a graphene sheet with one fixed end and one free end with a mass attached. It is demonstrated through this simple model that, in free vibration, within certain initial energy level and depending upon its length and the nonlinear elastic constants, that there exist bounded periodic solutions which are non-sinusoidal, and that for each fixed energy level, there is a bifurcation point depending upon material constants, beyond which the periodic solutions disappear. The amplitude, frequency, and the corresponding wave solutions for both free and forced harmonic vibrations are calculated analytically and numerically. Energy sweep is also performed for resonance applications.

Predicting Stock Prices Using Polynomial Classifiers: The Case of Dubai Financial Market

＜正＞This paper deals with basic concepts, mathematics, and design aspects of variable structure controller based on sliding mode as a principle operation approach. After reviewing the operation of the plant, a variable-structure system （VSS） based scheme is formulated to control the outflow rate. The scheme is then designed and tested by Simulink Toolbox Ver. 3. 0 of Matlab Ver. 6P5. Simulations are presented and have shown that VSS control is better and more versatile compared with the conventional approach using PID controller.

Predicting stock price movements is a challenging task for academicians and practitioners. In particular, forecasting price movements in emerging markets seems to be more elusive because they are usually more volatile often accompa-nied by thin trading-volumes and they are susceptible to more manipulation compared to mature markets. Technical analysis of stocks and commodities has become a science on its own;quantitative methods and techniques have been applied by many practitioners to forecast price movements. Lagging and sometimes leading technical indicators pro-vide rich quantitative tools for traders and investors in their attempt to gain advantage when making investment or trading decisions. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been used widely in predicting stock prices because of their capability in capturing the non-linearity that often exists in price movements. Recently, Polynomial Classifiers (PC) have been applied to various recognition and classification application and showed favorable results in terms of recog-nition rates and computational complexity as compared to ANN. In this paper, we present two prediction models for predicting securities’ prices. The first model was developed using back propagation feed forward neural networks. The second model was developed using polynomial classifiers (PC), as a first time application for PC to be used in stock prices prediction. The inputs to both models were identical, and both models were trained and tested on the same data. The study was conducted on Dubai Financial Market as an emerging market and applied to two of the market’s leading stocks. In general, both models achieved very good results in terms of mean absolute error percentage. Both models show an average error around 1.5% predicting the next day price, an average error of 2.5% when predicting second day price, and an average error of 4% when predicted the third day price.

Uranium Concentrations in Surface Soil Samples for Selected Regionsin AI-Anbar Governorate （Iraq） Using CR-39 Track Detector

In the present work, uranium concentrations were measured in twenty surface soil samples forselected regions in AI-Anbargovernorate using fission track etch technique, CR-39 track detector was used for registration of induced fission tracks. The results show that, the uranium concentrations ranged from 4.61 ppm, 56.93 Bq/kg （AL-Falluja AL-Jolan District） to 1.81 ppm 22.35 Bq/kg （Anah）with an average 3.42±0.79 ppm, 41.76±9.04 Bq/kg. The present results have shown that the uranium concentrations in the studied surface soil samples were less than the allowed limit 11.7 ppm recommended by UNSCEAR, 1993.

Measurement of Radon Gas Concentrations in Tap Water Samples for Thi-Qar Governorate Using Nuclear Track Detector (CR-39)

In the present work, we have measured the radon gas concentrations in tap water samples are taken directly from drinking tap water in sites houses being carried in Thi-Qar governorate by using nuclear track detector (CR-39). The results of measurements have shown that the highest average radon concentration in water samples is found in AL-Refai region which is equal to (0.223 ± 0.03 Bq/L), while the lowest average radon gas concentration is found in AL-Fajr region which is equal to (0.108 ± 0.01 Bq/L), with an average value of (0.175 ± 0.03 Bq/L). The highest value of annual effective dose (AED) in tap water samples is found in AL-Refai region, which is equal to (0.814 μSv/y), while the lowest value of (AED) is found in AL-Fajr region which is equal to (0.394 μSv/y), with an average value of (0.640 ± 0.1 μSv/y). The present results have shown that radon gas concentrations in tap water samples are less than the recommended international value (11.1 Bq/L). There for tap water in all the studied sites in Thi-Qar governorate is safe as for as radon concentration being concerned.

Pathfinding algorithm addresses the problem of finding the shortest path from source to destination and avoiding obstacles. One of the greatest challenges in the design of realistic Artificial Intelligence (AI) in computer games is agent movement. Pathfinding strategies are usually employed as the core of any AI movement system. In this work, A* search algorithm is used to find the shortest path between the source and destination on image that represents a map or a maze. Finding a path through a maze is a basic computer science problem that can take many forms. The A* algorithm is widely used in pathfinding and graph traversal. Different map and maze images are used to test the system performance (100 images for each map and maze). The system overall performance is acceptable and able to find the shortest path between two points on the images. More than 85% images can find the shortest path between the selected two points.

Iraq faces water scarcity due to a shortage of surface water resources. People in Safwan (Basrah, Iraq) and its environs use brackish groundwater as alternative resource. To improve water quality, small reverse osmosis (RO) plants have been established. The water selling price is (1.3 $/m3)* which does not cover the product cost which is (2.4 $/m3)*. Data were collected from eight plants, and a techno-economic assessment was conducted to explore the ideal cost. The known effective factored considered in this case, recovery ratio, temperature and total dissolved solids (TDS). From the other side, membrane replacement and energy cost were significantly effect, when their portions of the total production cost were 30.98%* and 48.38%* respectively as shown in Figure 10. In addition, software analysis was used to predict the scaling potential in raw water samples. Its results showed a high inorganic fouling (scaling) potential. Scaling has a permanent influence on operations and maintenance costs. These identified major cost influencers will be incorporated into the experimental design of the next phase of this ongoing research programme.

Carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC)has emerged in oil and gas industries as a superior substitution to the conventional HPAM and xanthan gum(XG)for high viscosity polymer flooding *** this study,the combined effect of conventional surfactant,sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate(SDBS)and CMC for potential surfactant-polymer(SP)flooding in enhanced oil recovery(EOR)has been ***,SDBS–CMC interaction and the functional groups present in CMC were appropriately *** presence of various C–O bonds signifies the existence of carboxymethyl group which greatly influence the rheological properties of CMC *** behaviour of SDBS–CMC was characterized by their viscosity,shear rate,solubilization,wettability,and surface *** flooding utilizing SDBS-CMC was performed and compared to commercial SDBS-XG SP *** results indicate several SDBS-CMC combinations are favourable for EOR *** viscosity shows direct relationship with CMC ***,at any given SDBS concentrations,significant increment was observed at 0.3 wt%and ***,the trend displayed inconclusive relation to SDBS *** of the SDBS-CMC combinations generate Winsor III emulsions particularly at CMC of 0.2 and 0.3 wt%,while Type II were observed in few *** CMC concentrations increased the contact angle,while gradual reductions were observed with SDBS *** gradual reduction in surface tension was highly influenced by the addition of CMC rather than SDBS.A novel combination of 0.3 wt%SDBS and 0.4 wt%CMC possessed an encouraging criterion in term of viscosity,solubilization,and surface tension reduction for EOR *** experiment from several SDBS-CMC combinations proved to recover additional oil ranging 16.4–20.2%of oil initially in place(OIIP).The trend in incremental oil recovery is similar to that of when utilising SDBS-XG.
