Cuticula. ba.teria.a.pea. detrimenta. to socia. spiders in mixed but not monoculture exposure

Much of a. a.ima.＇s hea.th sta.us, life history, a.d beha.ior a.e dicta.ed by intera.tions with its endogenous a.d exogenous ba.teria. communities. Unfortuna.ely, intera.tions between hosts a.d members of their resident ba.teria. community a.e often ignored in a.ima. beha.ior a.d beha.iora. ecology. Here, we a.m to identify the na.ure of host-microbe intera.tions in a.nonmodel orga.ism, the a.rica. socia. spider Stegodyphus dumicola. We collected a.d identified ba.teria.from the cuticles of spiders in situ a.d then exposed spiders to ba.teria. monocultures cultures via.topica. a.plica.ion or injection. We a.so topica.ly inocula.ed spiders with a.concomita.t ＂cockta.l＂ of ba.teria.a.d mea.ured the beha.ior of spiders da.ly for 24 da.s a.ter inocula.ion. La.tly, we collected a.d identified ba.teria.from the cuticles of prey items in the ca.ture webs of spiders, a.d then fed spiders domestic crickets which ha. been injected with these ba.teria. We a.so injected 1 species of prey-borne ba.teria.into the hemolymph of spiders. Only Ba.illus thuringiensis ca.sed increa.ed morta.ity when injected into the hemolymph of spiders, wherea. no ba.teria. monocultures ca.sed increa.ed morta.ity when a.plied topica.ly, rela.ive to control solutions. However, a.ba.teria. cockta.l of cuticula. ba.teria.ca.sed weight loss a.d morta.ity when a.plied topica.ly, yet did not detectibly a.ter spider beha.ior. Consuming prey injected with prey-borne ba.teria.wa. a.socia.ed with a. elonga.ed lifespa. in spiders. Thus, indirect evidence from multiple experiments suggests tha. the effects of these ba.teria.on spider survivorship a.pea. contingent on their mode of coloniza.ion a.d whether they a.e a.plied in monoculture or within a.mixed cockta.l. We urge tha. follow-up studies should test these host-microbe intera.tions a.ross different socia. contexts to determine the role tha. microbes pla. in colony performa.ce.
