Distribution of Candida Species and Molecular Typing of C. albicans Isolates in a Mexico City Tertiary Care Hospital from 2011 to 2013

The incidence of yeast infections has increased significantly over the past few years, constituting a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalised patients. The rapid identification of candidiasis is important for the clinical management of patients and to facilitate tracing the sources of infections in hospitalized patients. Here, we report a retrospective, single-centre study of Candida spp. distribution and antifungal susceptibility from January 2011 to May 2013 at a hospital in México City, regarding the importance of elucidating the identity of the infection-causing Candida species in order to improve prophylactic measures and treatment. Clinical data were collected from patient medical records and the laboratory database. Isolates were initially identified using standard mycology techniques, and then confirmed by PCR-based system using amplification of intergenic spacers (rDNA ITS) and restriction length polymorphism of PCR products after sequence-specific enzymatic cleavage (PCR-RFLP). We observed no shift from C. albicans to non-albicans Candida species: Candida albicans (73.7%) was the most prevalent species isolated, while C. dubliniensis was not identified in this study. Antifungal susceptibility was determined using FUNGITEST®17.4% of C. albicans isolates were resistant to fluconazole and 21.7% to itraconazole. Multiplex PCR microsatellite analysis of the clinical C. albicans isolates using primers for the CAI, CAIII and CAVI loci identified 29 different alleles for CAI, 8 alleles for CAIII and 31 for CAVI. The combined discriminatory power of these three microsatellites was 0.98, which was considered reliable for molecular typing. Microevolution of <i>Candida albicans</i>Isolate from a Patient with Mucocutaneous Candidiasis and HIV Infection

Candidiasis is the most common opportunistic fungal infection in HIV patients, and its presence is ascribed mainly to the persistence of the original infecting strain. The latter might acquire genetic variations during interaction with the host, reflecting the adaptation of the strain. Here, we report the case of a 32-year-old man complaining of asthenia, irregular hyperpyrexia, and dry cough, who was admitted to the emergency unit. Laboratory examination showed positivity for HIV. Dark violet macular lesions and ulcerated lesions with verrucous erosion were observed at the tip of the nose, whereas an ulcer without exudates was noted in the pubic region. Candida albicans was recovered from the skin by scraping these lesions. Cultures from the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were negative for bacteria and opportunistic fungi but were positive for Candida albicans. The isolates from the skin and BAL were typed by PCR-RFLP and Candida albicans was identified. Analysis by microsatellite length polymorphisms, established that the pubic isolate was a genetic variant of the isolate from the nose and mouth. This suggested a microevolutionary event. Despite clinical support, the patient died of multiple organ failure.

One of the main objectives of artificial intelligence lies in the simulation of the behavior of living organisms;emotions are a fundamental part of life, and they cannot be left aside when simulating behavior. In this research, software is developed that simulates the behavior of birds with different characteristics. The latter interacts by considering different stimuli from the environment (external), and the internal state of the subject (objectives). To achieve this, a model of birds in the role of prey and predators is developed that focuses on the study of the interaction between these organisms that exhibit specific behaviors in their environment. This project is a seminal work that aims to represent the emotions of birds, and the latter caused by stimuli from a dynamic environment.

Due to the pandemic that is currently being experienced worldwide, educational institutions (HEIs) have had to reinvent and innovate the mode of teaching, in order to continue the process of training students at all educational levels. Higher education has not been immune to this situation, the institutions of this educational level face various challenges in remote teaching: one of them, perhaps the most important, was to answer the question: How to get the student to continue their undergraduate studies remotely? In this sense, it was necessary, on the part of the students and the teachers, a preparation to go from the face-to-face to the virtual mode. This paper addresses the specific case of the analysis of the teaching-learning process of the Teaching-Learning Unit (UEA for its acronym in Spanish) of Structured Programming and Numerical Methods for Engineering at the undergraduate level, at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Azcapotzalco (UAM-A) and its relation to the student’s way of thinking. Likewise, the analysis will be carried out if the way of thinking of the students of the sample influences their academic performance when studying the subject of Structured Programming and Numerical Methods for Engineering.

Brassinosteroids and Plant Responses to Heavy Metal Stress. An Overview

Soil contamination with heavy metals has become a world-wide problem, leading to the loss in agricultural productivity. Plants have a remarkable ability to take up and accumulate heavy metals from their external environment and it is well known that high levels of heavy metals affect different physiological and metabolic processes. Brassinosteroids are considered as the sixth class of plant hormones and they are essential for plant growth and development. These compounds are able of inducing abiotic stress tolerance in plants. In this paper, information about brassinosteroids and plant responses to heavy metal stress is reviewed.

Combining Ability and Heterosis in Corn Breeding Lines to Forage and Grain

This study was conducted in two stages, in 2006 the formation of cross, in the experimental field of the Universidad Autonoma Agraria Antonio Narro Unidad Laguna (UAAANUL), and the evaluation of the same in 2007;at two locations with three environments, a locality was the experimental field of UAAANUL during spring and summer cycles and another location was the Niagara, Municipality of Aguascalientes, during the spring cycle. The genetic material used consisted of three groups of lines: the first group formed by four lines from the UAAANUL, the second group, two lines from INIFAP, and the third group, 10 lines of the International Center for Maize Improvement and Wheat (CIMMYT). The main objective was to estimate the effects of general combining ability (GCA) of the lines, and the specific combining ability (SCA) of their crosses and heterosis, to estimate its use in a breeding program. Estimates of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were obtained using an analysis of line x line. To forage yield (FY), B-40 (16.84 t·ha-1) and AN-447 (1.54 t·ha-1) and to grain yield (GY), AN-388R (2.31 t·ha-1) had the greatest effect of GCA in both types of yield. The greatest effects of SCA for (FY) were cross AN-447XCML-264 (17.56 t·ha-1) and AN-388RXCML-319 (16.54 t·ha-1), in (GY) were cross AN-447XCML-315 (1.94 t·ha-1) and B-40XCML-319 (1.78 t·ha-1). For heterosis, higher value in forage yield was cross AN-447XCML-264 (20.7%), in grain yield, were B-40XCML-319 (27.1%) and B-32XCML-319 (22.1%) crosses. These results show that it is possible to structure a hybrid program using best lines from CIMMYT, INIFAP and UAAANUL.

Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is a disease produced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and it is currently causing a catastrophic pandemic affecting humans *** disease has been lethal for approximately 3.12 million people around the world since January ***,among the most affected countries,Mexico ranks third in deaths after the United States of America and *** the high number of deceased people might also be explained by social aspects and lifestyle customs in Mexico,there is a relationship between this high proportion of deaths and comorbidities such as high blood pressure(HBP),type 2 diabetes,obesity,and metabolic *** official epidemiological figures reported by the Mexican government have indicated that 18.4%of the population suffers from HBP,close to 10.3%of adults suffer from type 2 diabetes,and approximately 36.1%of the population suffers from *** in the gut microbiota(GM)have been associated with these diseases and with COVID-19 severity,presumably due to inflammatory *** data about the association between GM dysbiosis and metabolic diseases could suggest that the high levels of susceptibility to SARSCoV-2 infection and COVID-19 morbidity in the Mexican population are primarily due to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes,obesity,and metabolic syndrome.

This research is framed within the affective computing, which explains the importance of emotions in human cognition (decision making, perception, interaction and human intelligence). Applying this approach to a pedagogical agent is an essential part to enhance the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process of an intelligent learning system. This work focuses on the design of the inference engine that will give life to the interface, where the latter is represented by a pedagogical agent. The inference engine is based on an affective-motivational model. This model is implemented by using artificial intelligence technique called fuzzy cognitive maps.

Dementia is a syndrome of chronic and progressive nature, characterized by the deterioration of cognitive functions and behavior, which causes a disability and dependence on others. Alzheimer’s Disease is a type of dementia that affects cognitive functioning, behavior, and overall functionality of those who suffer from the irremediably progressive form, as it is a neurodegenerative disease. For this reason, development of a reactive interface is proposed to be inserted in a cognitive stimulation program. This program offers a series of exercises of mental functions, in order to delay or slow down the progress of this illness. The reactive interface allows access to these exercises and incorporates a user profile that predicts the possible emotions that may be experienced during the work sessions. In order to accomplish this, a cognitive structure of emotions is developed to be included in the reactive profile. This will allow enhancement of the interaction between the system and the patient. The user’s emotional state may interfere, considering within the design stage the phenomenon of altered consciousness during this degenerative process. The consciousness represents the interface of human beings with our environment. This proposal allows us to obtain information related to the user’s emotional state during the performance of specific cognitive tasks, permitting us to optimize the proposed stimulation activities.
