The equivalent permeability tensor is essential to the application of the equivalent porous media model in the numerical seepage simulation for fractured rock masses. In this paper, a revised solution of the equivalent permeability tensor is proposed to represent the influence of the fracture connectivity in discontinuous fractures. A correction coefficient is involved to reflect the com- plex seepage flow type through the rock bridge. This correction coefficient is back analyzed from single-hole packer tests, based on the Artificial Neural Network （ANN） back analysis and the Finite Element Method （FEM） seepage simulation. The limitation of this back analysis algorithm is that the number of single-hole packer tests should be equal or greater than the number of fracture sets, and three is the maximum number of the fracture sets. The proposed solution and the back analysis algorithm are applied in the permea- bility measurement and the seepage simulation for the Xiaowan arch dam foundation.

Thanks to advances in tunnel boring machine(TBM)and monitoring,significant progress has been achieved in the application of soft computing techniques for the optimization of TBM tunneling and the reduction of disturbance related to tunneling in urban *** experimental,analytical,and numerical methods have limitations in solving problems related to TBM tunneling,engineers can use soft computing techniques in analyzing the relationship between the target tunneling responses and influential design inputs parameters,including the geometrical,geological,and TBM operational *** techniques are useful in achieving robust and low-cost ***,engineers face difficulties in making an optimal choice of the soft computing technique to solve the complex problems related to TBM *** help with this choice,this study presents state of the art about the use of soft computing techniques in TBM tunneling through practical *** study proposes recommendations for the optimal use of these techniques,in particular(i)the importance of preliminary analyses for the selection and reduction of input parameters,(ii)the necessity to complete insufficient data using laboratory tests and numerical modeling,(iii)the selection of reduced number of hidden layers and nodes to avoid overfitting,(iv)the use of recurrent neural networks to deal with time-series data,and(v)the association of soft computing methods with hybrid optimization techniques to reduce the risk of convergence to local minima.

This paper discusses the challenges and diffculties experienced during soil investigation in urban areas using drilling machines and soil *** focus is on the consequences of a lack of data on the subsoil proﬁle and presence of utilities,which could cause major accidents with severe economic and social losses,resulting in constriction activities being delayed and urban services being *** paper describes certain accidents related to soil investigation in Qatar and their consequences,as well as the lessons learned from these *** order to meet the challenges of soil investigation in urban areas,this paper presents a solution based on smart tech-nology,which includes:(i)a geotechnical information system with update data concerning the soil proﬁle,soil surface,utilities locations,and water table level;(ii)tools for data management,analysis,and visualization;and(iii)a user interface that allows authorities,com-panies,and citizens to access authorized data via a graphic interface,update data,and send messages and alerts in the case of any inci-dent ***,the paper presents a promising perspective for the development of smart drilling devices,which record data related to the functioning of a drilling machine and transmit data to the smart soil investigation system.

The present paper presents analysis of the influence of the soil saturation on the free-field response of liquefiable *** are conducted using a finite element program developed for partially saturated soils subjected to cyclic *** performances of the proposed model are analysed by simulation of undrained triaxial tests with different water *** finite element program is then used for the analysis of the influences of the soil saturation,density and position of the water table on the liquefaction of a soil layer subjected to cyclic *** show that the soil saturation significantly affects the liquefaction of partially saturated sandy *** decrease in the soil saturation results in a reduction of liquefaction risk.

Laboratory Study of Geotextiles Performance on Reinforced Sandy Soil

This paper presents the results of triaxial tests conducted for the investigation of the influence of geotextiles on stress-strain and volumetric change behaviour of reinforced sandy soil. Tests were carried out on loose sandy soil. The experimental program includes drained compression tests on samples reinforced with different values of both geotextiles layers （Ng） and confining pressure （σ′c）. Two methods of preparation were used： air pluviation （AP） and moist tamping （MT）. Test results show that the geotextiles induce a quasi-linear increase in the stress deviator （q） and volume contraction in the reinforced sand. Method of preparation significantly affects the shear strength; samples prepared by the air pluviation method and mobilized deviator stresses are significantly higher than those prepared by moist tamping method. Geotextiles restrict the dilation of reinforced sandy soil and consequently the contraction increases. The mobilized friction angle increases with increasing number of layers and decreases with increasing initial confining pressure. Samples prepared by moist tamping present mobilized friction angles significantly lower than those prepared by air pluviation method. For samples prepared by the air pluviation method, the secant modulus at ε1=1% and 5% decreases with increasing geotextile layers; those prepared by the moist tamping method, secant modulus at ε1=1% and 5% increases with increasing number of geotextile layer sand confining pressure. From 10% axial strain, secant modulus increases with increasing inclusions of geotextile layers.

Dear Editor,We are describing a rare case presenting with page phenomenon,9 years post radical cystectomy for muscle invasive bladder *** kidney was developed secondary to a late recurrent urothelial tumour in the left renal *** case is a fifty-seven-year-old gentleman presented with poorly controlled hypertension and left dull aching loin *** blood pressure(BP)was 180/80 mmHg at diagnosis and was down to 150/80 mmHg using angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE)inhibitor and beta blocker *** underwent a radical cystectomy(RC)and ileal conduit urinary diversion 9 years *** of his cystectomy specimen was localized urothelial carcinoma with negative resection margin and negative lymph nodes(T2N0M0).Examination showed a palpable mobile mass in the left hypochondrium.
