Epidermal cysts are one of the most common benign skin tumors, although they are rarely found in the umbilicus of a child. Herein we report the case of a 13-year-old girl with a congenital umbilical mass. This mass had been misdiagnosed as a lipoma at birth. Awareness of this lesion can avoid its misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment.

Research purpose:The present study was designed to assess the relationship between gap junction and maturation of clock system in rat granulosa cells stimulated by ***:Immature and mature granulosa cells were prepared by puncturing ovaries of diethylstibesterol(DES) and equine chorionic gonadotropin(eCG)-treated mouse Period2(Per2)-dLuc reporter gene transgenic rats,***2 oscillations were measured by real-time monitoring *** expression levels were examined by ***43 protein expression in different size follicles was determined via immunohistochemistry(IHC).Results:Mature granulosa cells exposed to dexamethasone(DXM) synchronization displayed several Per2-dLuc oscillations and rhythmic expression of clock ***,obvious evidence that FSH stimulation significantly increased the amplitude of Per2 oscillations in granulosa cells was observed in the current study,which was confirmed by the elevation of Per2 and Rev-erbα(Nr1d1) mRNA *** also induced a great phase advance shift of Per2 *** granulosa cells cultured for 2 d with FSH expressed higher mRNA level of Per2,Rev-erbα,Bmal1(Armt1),Lhcgr,and Cx43(Gja1) than immature ***,immunofluorescence result revealed abundant Cx43 protein in antral follicles stimulated with eCG,apparently weak or no fluorescence signal of Cx43 in primary and preantral *** gap junction blockers,Lindane and Carbenoxolone,significantly decreased the amplitude of Per2 oscillations,which further adhered by Per2 and Bmal1 transcript *** addition,both of them induced an obvious phase delay shift of Per2 ***:our data demonstrate the existence of functional circadian clockwork in mature granulosa cells and development of circadian clockwork in granulosa cells upon FSH stimulation through gap junction *** addition,our findings may explain how the gap junction blocker,lindane,also known as a common pesticide,impaired reproductive system

The technique of the reverse-phase performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) was employed to separate and purify the toxic proteins from the venom of Agkistrodon blomhoffii brevicaudus collected in China 3 toxic proteins marked as AgTx-1, AgTx-2 and AgTx-3 consisting of about 122 amino acid residues were screened The toxicities (LD50,) of the AgTx-1, AgTx-2 and AgTx-3 were 0.075, 0.51 and 6.6 mg per kg weight of mice respectively. Toxicological experiment in the chick biventer cervicis nerve-muscle preparation showed that the acetylcholine (Ach) sensitivity of the preparation was unchanged after the total failure of the indirect contraction caused by AgTx-1 and AgTx-2. suggesting that they were presynaptic blockers, namely β-type of snake toxins. However, the amplitude of indirect contraction of the preparation was gradually reduced due to its incomplete relaxation caused by AgTx-3, indicating that it should belong to the category of cytotoxins. The partial amino acid sequences of 3 toxins have been established. It was found in ref. [1] that the sequences of the first 32 N-terminal ammo acid residues of AgTx-1 and AgTx-2, as well as β -agkistrodotoxin (β-AgTx) reported previously were identical (the residue at the position 30 of β-AgTx should be Trp). In view of the similarity in toxicities, and the amounts in the venom and other properties, it was concluded that AgTx-1 should be β-AgTx and consequently was renamed β1-AgTx. AgTx-2 should be the isoform of β1-AgTx, and correspondingly named β2-AgTx.

Streptococcus agalactiae causes various severe infectious diseases such as sepsis, meningitis, and streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome. Though Streptococcus agalactiae infection has been increasing recently, the comprehensive characteristic investigation of invasive Streptococcus agalactiae isolated in tertiary care hospitals has not been nearly performed in Japan. In this study, we investigated the clinical characteristics and antimicrobial susceptible patterns of 88 Streptococcus agalactiae isolated at two tertiary care hospitals during 2009-2015 in Japan. There was no significant differences between genders in our study. Two-third Streptococcus agalactiae were isolated from over age 60. Total mortality rate was 19% and invasive Streptococcus agalactiae-associated death cases have occurred every year after 2011. All Streptococcus agalactiae were completely susceptible toampicillin. Total non-susceptible rates of erythromycin, minocycline, levofloxacin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in this study were approximately 30%, 44%, 37%, and 7%, respectively. Our results suggest the need for continuous antimicrobial susceptibility survey of Streptococcus agalactiae.

Effects of flooding on arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization and root-nodule formation in different roots of soybeans

In several countries in monsoon Asia, soybean crops are cultivated in upland fields converted from paddies. In such fields, excess soil water often induces extensive damage followed by lower nutrient uptake by this crop. In this study, the effects of flooding during the early growth stage of pot-grown soybeans on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization and root nodule formation were investigated. Twenty days after sowing cv. Fukuyutaka, half of the pots were flooded (flooding) and the other half were left unflooded (irrigation). The plants were sampled after 39 days of flooding. Typical morphological alterations to flooding were found, including an enlarged hypocotyl diameter and partial cracking of the surface tissues, and adventitious roots developed on the soil surface. The primary and lateral roots were shorter and the adventitious roots were longer in flooding than in irrigation. In flooding, the ratio of the aerenchyma area to the stele area was 82.5% in adventitious roots. The AM colonization ratio in flooding was significantly lower than in irrigation. The ratio in flooding was markedly low in the primary and lateral roots, but it was not necessarily low in the adventitious roots. Root nodules were formed on the adventitious roots but not on the primary and lateral roots, especially in flooding. These results showing different rates of AM colonization and root nodule formation between the two different types of roots improve the understanding of responses of soybeans grown in paddy-rotated upland fields.

Gracilis Muscular Flap for Large Urethral Defect

We report the use of Gracilis muscle to repair a large urethral defect. A 57-year-old-man with rectal cancer underwent abdominoperineal resection including part of the prostate and seminal vesicle. Soon after surgery, he presented with massive urinary leakage from the prostatic urethra. Conservative treatment for one month failed. The defect of the prostatic urethra, measuring 2.5 cm in diameter, was closed with the right gracilis muscular flap. About five years and 6 months after surgery, the patient can void spontaneously without incontinence. Cystoscopy demonstrated good epithelization of the reconstructed urethra without stenosis. The gracilis muscular flap was easily available and useful for closure of a large urethral defect.
