AIM:To evaluate the epidemiologic,anatomic,and clinical features of open globe injuries in ***:The medical files of patients under the age of 16 who had been operated for an open globe injury at Akdeniz University Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology were retrospectively ***:A total of 90 patients were evaluated in this *** these patients,26(28.9%)were female and64(71.1%)were *** mean age of the patients was7.7±4.2 *** male/female ratio was observed to increase with increasing age(P=0.006,P=7.48).Injuries were most likely to occur in spring and autumn(P=0.028).The time interval between the injury and the surgical repair was 9.36±***(44.4%)of the injuries occurred in the home,27(30%)occurred in the yard,and 21(23.3%)happened while playing in the *** most common causes of injury were sharp metal objects(PluSION:Open globe injuries that are suffered in childhood generally occur either at home,in the yard,or on the street,with sharp metal objects being the most common cause of *** initial visual acuity and the length of the wound are the most important determinants of the final visual acuity.

AIM:To investigate the choroidal thickness and the microvascular network changes around the macula in thyroid eye disease(TED)patients at different stages and the relationship of those changes with risk factors,serum antibodies and the severity of ***:A total of 85 participants were *** participants underwent ophthalmology and endocrinology *** choroidal thickness(SFCT),superficial(s)and deep(d)foveal avascular zone(FAZ)area,mean(m)and central(c)superficial vascular density(SVD),deep vascular density(DVD)measurements of the enrolled cases were performed with Topcon swept source optical coherence tomography(OCT)/OCT angiography(OCTA)DRI OCT *** linear regression analysis was used to explore the associations between SFCT,FAZ area,SVD,DVD and the relevant factors of ***:Those with active TED patients had higher c-DVD and m-DVD levels(P<0.05),however there is no statistically significant difference in SFCT between active and stable TED *** the serum antibodies,it was observed that s-FAZ and d-FAZ increased,c-SVD and m-SVD decreased in patients with high thyroid stimulating hormone-receptor autoantibodies(TRAB)level,whereas SFCT thickened in patients with high levels of both TRAB and human thyroglobulin(hTG).There was no significant difference in SFCT,FAZ,SVD and DVD measurement at gender,between hyperthyroid and euthyroid patients and among those with or without thyroid papillary ***:The results show that both disease activation and serum antibodies differentially affect both superficial and deep retinal vascular *** has also been shown that high serum antibody levels affect choroidal thickness independent of clinical activity.

Neuropsychiatric side effects of long-term recombinant interferon-α therapy consist of a large spectrum of symptoms. In the literature, cranial neuropathy, especially Bell's palsy, and movement disorders, have been reported much less often than other neurotoxic effects. We report a case of Bell's palsy in a patient with chronic hepatitis C during peginterferon-α and ribavirin therapy. The patient subsequently developed clinically inapparent facial nerve involvement on the contralateral side and showed an increase in choreic movements related to Huntington's disease during treatment.

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of custom-made soft keratoconus(KC)lenses on corneal aberrations and photic phenomena in two different optical zones in patients with ***:Sixty eyes of 42 patients with KC were examined at baseline and after fitting HydroCone(Toris K)soft silicone hydrogel *** spectacle-corrected visual acuity(BSCVA)and contact lens-corrected visual acuity(CLCVA)were ***-and higher-order corneal aberrations(LOAs and HOAs)were measured with and without Toris K lenses and compared in central 4.5 mm and 7 mm *** pupil diameter and subjective photic phenomena were also ***:Mean CLCVA was significantly improved compared to BSCVA(Plues for HOAs,spherical and residual aberrations,and optical path differences were increased,while LOAs,trefoil,and quadrifoil coefficients were *** rate of photic phenomena was significantly higher in participants with a pupil size>6.00 mm(85.7%).CONCluSION:Toris K lenses provide good visual results and a significant reduction in central corneal aberrations in patients with KC but could cause an increase in peripheral *** practical and nonsurgical approach appears to be an effective method for the visual management of KC.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of chronic smoking on color vision in young ***: This study included 91 smokers and 88non-smokers(a total of 179 volunteers) without any ophthalmologic and systemical disorders. The subjects were between 18-40 years of age with a best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) of 20/20, normal anterior and posterior segment examinations and normal intraocular pressure. The color vision of the subjects were evaluated with Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test(FMHT). The total error scores and axis calculation were performed for each subject and the results ***: Mean age and the standard deviation was28±5y in the smokers group, and 26.7±5.5y in the control group(P =0.101). Sex distribution was similar in the two groups(P =0.365). There was no significant correlation between age and FMHT total error scores(P =0.069).Median of FMHT total error scores of smokers and non-smokers were 65 and 50.50, respectively. FMHT total error scores was found significantly higher in smokers than non-smokers(P =0.004). There was no statisticaly significant difference between smoker and non-smoker groups with respect to axis ratio calculation(P =0.611).There was no significant correlation with FMHT total error scores with neither smoking duration nor number of cigarettes smoked per day(P =0.405, P =0.454,respectively).· CONCluSION: This study suggested that chronic smoking affects the color vision of young smokers but this may not be sector selective.

AIMTo determine the impact of rigid gas permeable (RGP) and silicone-hydrogel keratoconus lenses on the quality of life (QoL) in keratoconus (KCN) patients using the self-reported results from the Contact Lens Impact on Quality of Life (CLIQ) *** January 2013 to April 2013, 27 consecutive KCN patients who wore RGP contact lenses (conflexair100 UV KE Zeiss-Wöhlk) or soft silicone-hydrogel contact lenses (SHCLs) for KCN (KeraSoft IC- Bausch&Lomb or Hydrocone Toris K-Swiss lens) completed the CLIQ *** mean age of 27 patients was 29.6±8.0y. Fifteen patients were RGP user. The groups were comparable with respect to the mean patient age, sex, and mean K values (P=0.1, P=0.8 and P=0.1, respectively). The mean CLIQperson measure was 42.8±5.5 in RGP group and 39.6±5.5 in SHCLs for KCN group (P=0.06). CLIQperson measure was positively correlated with steep K value (r=0.301, P=0.04). When eyes were stratified by visual acuity with contact lenses, the mean CLIQperson measure was 42.01±5.6 in eyes with a visual acuity of 20/20-20/25 (n=44) and 38.4±5.26 in eyes with a visual acuity of 20/32 or less (n=10; P=0.097).CONCluSIONRGP lenses and SHCLs for KCN have similar impact on QoL.

Histopathological comparison of topical therapy modalities for acute radiation proctitis in an experimental rat model

AIM： To evaluate the prevalent topical therapeutic modalities available for the treatment of acute radiation proctitis compared to formalin. METHODS： A total of 120 rats were used. Four groups （n = 30） were analyzed with one group for each of the following applied therapy modalities： control, mesalazine, formalin, betamethasone, and misoprostol. A single fraction of 17.5 Gy was delivered to each rat. The rats in control group rats were given saline, and the rats in the other three groups received appropriate enemas twice a day beginning on the first day after the irradiation until the day of euthanasia. On d 5, 10, and 15, ten rats from each group were euthanized and a pathologist who was unaware of treatment assignment examined the rectums using a scoring system. RESULTS： The histopathologic scores for surface epithelium, glands （crypts） and lamina propria stroma of the rectums reached their maximum level on d 10. The control and formalin groups had the highest and mesalazine had the lowest, respectively on d 10. On the 15^th d, mesalazine, betamethasone, and misoprostol had the lowest scores of betamethasone. CONCluSION： Mesalazine, betamethasone, and misoprostol are the best topical agents for radiation proctitis and formalin has an inflammatory effect and should not be used.

We demonstrate a handheld on-chip biosensing technology that employs plasmonic microarrays coupled with a lens-free computational imaging system towards multiplexed and high-throughput screening of biomolecular interactions for point-of-care applications and resource-limited *** lightweight and field-portable biosensing device,weighing 60 g and 7.5 cm tall,utilizes a compact optoelectronic sensor array to record the diffraction patterns of plasmonic nanostructures under uniform illumination by a single-light emitting diode tuned to the plasmonic mode of the *** a sensitive plasmonic array design that is combined with lens-free computational imaging,we demonstrate label-free and quantitative detection of biomolecules with a protein layer thickness down to 3 *** large-scale plasmonic microarrays,our on-chip imaging platform enables simultaneous detection of protein mono-and bilayers on the same platform over a wide range of biomolecule *** this handheld device,we also employ an iterative phase retrieval-based image reconstruction method,which offers the ability to digitally image a highly multiplexed array of sensors on the same plasmonic chip,making this approach especially suitable for high-throughput diagnostic applications in field settings.
