Distribution and tensile strength of Hornbeam （Carpinus betulus） roots growing on slopes of Caspian Forests, Iran

Biomechanical characteristics of the root system of hornbeam （Carpinus betulus） were assessed by measuring Root Area Ratio （RAR） values and tensile strength of root specimens of eight hornbeam trees growing on hilly terrain of Northern Iran. RAR values of the roots were obtained using profile trenching method at soil depth of the top 0.1 m. In total 123 root specimens were analyzed for tensile strength. Results indicate that in general, RAR decreases with depth, following a power function. The RAR values in up and down slopes have no significant statistical differences. In most cases, the maximum RAR values were located in soil depth of the top 0.1 m, with maximum rooting depth at about 0.75 m. The minimum and maximum RAR values along the profiles were 0.004% and 6.431% for down slope and 0.004% and 3.995% for up slope, respectively. The number of roots in the up and down slope trenches was not significantly different. In the same manner as for RAR, number of roots distributing with depth was satisfactorily approximated a power function. The penetration depths of above 90 percent of the roots were at soil depths of 50 cm and 60 cm for up and down slopes, respectively. Results of Spearman＇s bivariate correlation showed no significant correlation between the RAR value with tree diameter and gradient of slope and number of roots. The mean value of root tensile strength was 31.51 ± 1.05 MPa and root tensile strength decreased with the increase in root diameter, following a power law equation. Using ANCOVA, we found intraspecies variation of tensile strength.

Seasonal modulation of the C-type lectin MGL on human DCs

The C-type lectin MGL is a pathogen recognition receptor, expressed by dendritic cells (DCs) and macrophages (Mfs), able to bind GalNAc (Tn) carrying structures. This receptor also recognized Tn-TAAs that were internalized, processed and presented by DCs to T cells and it acted as an adjuvant on DCs, highlighting its possible application in anti-cancer vaccination. In this work, we found that this receptor present a seasonal modulation: its expression is higher in winter rather than in summer. The percentage of MGL+ donors displayed a negative trend that dropped to 33% during the summer and increased up to 100% in winter. This modulation could be also ascribed to the circa-annual variation of glucocorticoids, in fact MGL is up-regulated in presence of dexamethasone in vitro. The seasonal variation of this receptor could be an important point in the field of tumor vaccination strategies.

Short-term prediction of NO_(2) and NO_(x) concentrations using multilayer perceptron neural network: a case study of Tabriz, Iran

Introduction:Due to the health effects caused by airborne pollutants in urban areas,forecasting of air quality parameters is one of the most important topics of air quality *** recent years,statistical models based on artificial neural networks(ANNs)have been increasingly applied and evaluated for forecasting of air ***:The development of ANN and multiple linear regressions(MLRs)has been applied to short-term prediction of the NO_(2) and NO_(x) concentrations as a function of meteorological *** optimum structure of ANN was determined by a trial and error *** used hourly NO_(x) and NO_(2) concentrations and metrological parameters,automatic monitoring network during October and November 2012 for two monitoring sites(Abrasan and Farmandari sites)in Tabriz,***:Designing of the network architecture is based on the approximation theory of Kolmogorov,and the structure of ANN with 30 neurons had the best *** trained by scaled-conjugate-gradient(trainscg)training algorithm has implemented to *** also demonstrates that MLP neural networks offer several advantages over linear MLR *** results show that the correlation coefficient(R2)values are 0.92 and 0/94 for NO_(2) and NO_(x) concentrations,*** in MLR model,R2 values were 0.41 and 0.44 for NO_(2) and NO_(x) concentrations,***:This work shows that MLP neural networks can accurately model the relationship between local meteorological data and NO_(2) and NO_(x) concentrations in an urban environment compared to linear models.

Sensing the heavy water concentration in an H_(2)O-D_(2)O mixture by solid-solid phononic crystals

A new method based on phononic crystals is presented to detect the concentration of heavy water(D_(2)O)in an H_(2)O-D_(2)O *** have been obtained and analyzed in the concentration range of 0%-10%and 90%-100%D_(2)O.A proposed structure of tungsten scatterers in an aluminum host is *** order to detect the target material,a cavity region is considered as a sound wave resonator in which the target material with different concentrations of D_(2)O is *** changing the concentration of D_(2)O in the H_(2)O-D_(2)O mixture,the resonance frequency undergoes a frequency *** 1%change in D_(2)O concentration in the H_(2)O-D_(2)O mixture causes a frequency change of about 120 *** finite element method is used as the numerical method to calculate and analyze the natural frequencies and transmission spectra of the proposed *** performance evaluation index shows a high Q factor up to 1475758 and a high sensitivity up to 13075,which are acceptable values for sensing *** other figures of merit related to the detection performance also indicate high-quality performance of the designed sensor.

Plant-pollinator metanetworks in fragmented landscapes:a simulation study

Background The topology of the plant-pollinator network can be explained by the species’abundance and their random ***-pollinator networks can be studied in the context of a landscape,because each patch can accommodate a certain local *** populations of pollinators in the landscape can be connected through migration and then constitute a metanetwork that is known as a combination of spatial and ecological *** this regard,habitat fragmentation can affect the topology of plant-pollinator metanetworks through changes in the species abundance and limiting their ***,it is not clear what pattern(fragmented or aggregated)of the landscape structure can accommodate networks with a higher degree of *** we created simulated landscapes with different forest proportions scenarios(from 5%to 50%of the total landscape)and degrees of ***,for each landscape,we limited the proportion of pollinators to the forest *** assumed that plants and pollinators are randomly distributed around the landscape and interact *** used landscape metrics to measure different aspects of landscape structure and bipartite metrics for calculating the degree of specialization in plant-pollinator *** The statistical relationship between bipartite and landscape metrics showed that the relationship between the topology of plant-pollinator networks and the landscape structure is affected by the forest amount in the landscape and the degree of forest *** also found that according to the nestedness and H2(a measure of specialization)metrics,fragmented landscapes contain more general plant-pollinator *** Our findings suggest that fragmented landscapes,characterized by scattered forest patches,can promote higher levels of interaction between limited pollinators and diverse flowers,leading to more general plant-pollinator networks.

HER2-based recombinant immunogen to target DCs through FcγRs for cancer immunotherapy

Dendritic cell(DC)-based immunotherapy is an attractive approach to induce long lasting antitumor effector cells aiming to control cancer progression. DC targeting is a critical step in the design of DC vaccines in order to optimize delivery and processing of the antigen, and several receptors have been characterized for this purpose. In this study, we employed the FcγRs to target DCs both in vitro and in vivo. We designed a recombinant molecule(HER2- Fc) composed of the immunogenic sequence of the human tumor-associated antigen HER2(aa 364–391) and the Fc domain of a human Ig G1. In a mouse model, HER2-Fc c DNA vaccination activated significant T cell-mediated immune responses towards HER2 peptide epitopes as detected by IFN-γ ELIspot and induced longer tumor latency as compared to Ctrl-Fc-vaccinated control mice. Human in vitro studies indicated that the recombinant HER2-Fc immunogen efficiently targeted human DCs through the FcγRs resulting in protein cross-processing and in the activation of autologous HER2-specific CD8+ T cells from breast cancer patients.

Effect of copper slag recovery on hydrometallurgical cut-off grades considering environmental aspects

Determining the hydrometallurgical cut-off grades specifies the destination of low grade materials and this is subjected to more benefits in mining. Copper production rate is considered as one of the fundamental issues in hydrometallurgical cut-off grades determination. Slags are remarked as one of the main sources of copper. It is not only regarded as a waste but also identified as another resource extracting base metals. Slags are characterized by copper high grade. Thus, slag copper recovery can be led to different cut-off grades and net present value(NPV). The current research scrutinizes the effect of slag recovery by both flotation and hydrometallurgical methods on the hydrometallurgical cut-off grades. For this purpose, the optimum cut-off grade algorithms of hydrometallurgical methods are developed by considering associated environmental parameters, incomes and also the costs. Then, their optimum amounts are calculated with NPV maximization as an objective function. The results indicate that considering slag copper recovery in the hydrometallurgical cut-off grade algorithms reduces the environmental costs caused by slag dumping and leads to more NPV by 9%.

Objective:To determine the significance of temperature,rainfall and humidity in the seasonal abundance of Anopheles stephensi in southern ***:Data on the monthly abundance of Anopheles stephensi larvae and adults were gathered from earlier studies conducted between 2002 and 2019 in malaria prone areas of southeastern *** data for the studied counties were obtained from climatology *** estimating equations method was used for cluster correlation of data for each study site in different ***:A significant relationship was found between monthly density of adult and larvae of Anopheles stephensi and precipitation,max temperature and mean temperature,both with simple and multiple generalized estimating equations analysis(P<0.05).But when analysis was done with one month lag,only relationship between monthly density of adults and larvae of Anopheles stephensi and max temperature was significant(P<0.05).Conclusions:This study provides a basis for developing multivariate time series models,which can be used to develop improved appropriate epidemic prediction systems for these ***-term entomological study in the studied sites by expert teams is recommended to compare the abundance of malaria vectors in the different areas and their association with climatic variables.

Maximizing the Absorbed Power of A Point Absorber Using An FA-Based Optimized Model Predictive Control

This paper presents an extended model predictive controller for maximizing the absorbed power of a point absorber wave energy converter. Owing to the great influence of controller parameters upon the absorbed power, the optimization of these parameters is carried out for the first time by a firefly algorithm(FA). Error, the difference between output velocity of buoy and input wave speed which leads to power maximization in the optimized MPC is compared with the classical MPC. Simulation results indicate that given the high accuracy and acceptable speed of the algorithm, it can adjust the parameters of the controller to the point where system error decreased effectively and the absorbed energy increased about 4 MW.
