Seismicity and Seismotectonics of Jeddah-Makkah Region, West-Central Saudi Arabia

Jeddah-Makkah regionis have been suffering from earthquake crisis where some moderate to destructive earthquakes have been recorded. These earthquake activities are oriented along major faults or clustered in certain spots. Moreover, these earthquake events have annual recurrence periods, so the identification of these seismogenic source zones is of utmost importance for mapping the most hazardous localities which should be avoided in the future urban planning. Historical and instrumental earthquakes have been collected from national and international data centers and unified in catalogue. The existence of microearthquakes inland suggests that there is a significant level of tectonic activity at away from the axial trough of the Red Sea. Then, seismogenic source zones have been defined depending on the major tectonic trends; distribution of earthquake epicenters, seismicity rate（a ＆ b- values） and fault plane solution of major earthquakes. It is concluded that Jeddah-Makkah region is affected by the outlined five seismogenic source zones; three of these zones aligned of the main Red Sea axial trough（southwestern Jeddah, western Jeddah, and northwestern Jeddah zones）, while the other two zones are located in the land area of the region（Thewal-Rabegh and Jeddah-Makkah zones）. These inland zones correlated well with the main trends of major tectonics which refleet the reactivation of tectonic movements along these fault trends. The Red Sea zones are in agreement with the main path of the axial trough. The range of b-value in these identified zones is 0.65 to 1.03 through these identified zones. The area characterized by higher b-values could be indicative of a relative low stress regime which was a result of resulting from the stress release by the earthquakes. Whereas, the areas of lower b-values can be considered as an evidence of a relatively higher stress regime associated with a dominantly extensional stresses. Aim： To investigate the effects of crude garlic on adult male rat reproductive functions. Methods： Thirty male rats were divided into five groups： group 1 （untreated） and groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 were fed for 30 days with 5%, 10%, 15% and 30% crude garlic, respectively. Testes and accessory organs were weighed and some markers were assessed. Light and electron microscopy observations were also performed. Results： A significant decrease was observed in the body weight of groups 4 （14%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （20%; P 〈 0.01）; of the prostate weight in group 5 （29.1%; P 〈 0.05） and of seminal vesicle weight in groups 3 （14.4%; P 〈 0.01）, 4 （18.3%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （27.3%; P 〈 0.01）. In contrast, testis and epididymis weights were unchanged. In epididymis tissue, the alpha glucosidase activity and the spermatozoa density were unchanged. The treatment resulted in a significant decrease in testosterone serum levels in groups 3 （77.3%; P 〈 0.01）, 4 （77.3%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （90.9%; P 〈 0.01）, associated with a significant increase in LH serum levels （P 〈 0.01）. Testicular histology showed a dose-dependent increase in the percentage of empty seminiferous tubules. Moreover, testicular function was affected; a significant decrease in phosphatase acid activity （P 〈 0.01） and testosterone （P 〈 0.05） contents were observed. Conclusion： Crude garlic consumption during 1 month reduced testosterone secretion and altered spermatogenesis at 10%, 15% and 30% doses.

Many surgeons practice prophylactic drainage after cholecystectomy without reliable evidence,this study was conducted to answer the question whether to drain or not to drain after cholecystectomy for acute calculous cholecystitis.A retrospective review of all patients who had cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis in Aseer Central Hospital,Abha,Saudi Arabia,was conducted from April 2010 to April *** were extracted from hospital case *** data included clinical presentation,routine investigations and liver function *** data included excessive adhesions,bleeding,bile leak,and drain *** cases such as pericholecystic collections,mucocele and empyema were also *** who needed therapeutic drainage were *** data included hospital stay,volume of drained fluid,time of drain removal,and drain site *** study included 103 patients allocated into two groups;group A（n = 38） for patients with operative drain insertion and group B（n = 65） for patients without drain *** number of patients with preoperative diagnosis of acute non-complicated cholecystitis was significantly greater in group B（80%） than group A（36.8%）（P 〈 0.001）.Operative time was significantly longer in group *** patients who were converted from laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy were in group *** analysis revealed that hospital stay was significantly（P 〈 0.001） longer in patients with preoperative *** was no added benefit for prophylactic drain insertion after cholecystectomy for acute calculous cholecystitis in non-complicated or in complicated cases.

Administration of Zinc with Paroxetine Improved the Forced Swim Test Behavioral Pattern of Treated Mice in Acute and Sub-Acute Study

Despite progressive improvement in treating major depressive disorder (MDD), it remains mostly unresponsive to one antidepressant medication. Zinc is a brain highly abundant trace metal, a brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) inducer, a modulator of synaptic plasticity and potent suppressor of the NMDA receptors. We proposed that co-administration of zinc with the antide-pressants may represent a valuable regimen to improve the efficacy of these drugs. This work has been implemented to evaluate the behavioral changes of acute and sub-acute co-administration of zinc with Paroxtine in mice. Methods: The animals were injected intra-peritoneal with either Paroxtine (20 mg/kg) which was a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), zinc sulfate (30 mg/kg) or Paroxtine in combination with zinc for one day and one week (once daily). The pattern of the animal behavior was assessed in the forced swim test (FST). Results and Discussion: The behavioral patterns of the animals in the FST include immobility, swimming and climbing. Successful antidepressant should decrease the immobility time with either increase in swimming and/or climbing behavior based on the drug pharmacological activity. Our results revealed a significant decrease of immobility and increase of swimming behavior indicating serotonin-dependent pharmacological activity of Paroxtine or zinc alone as well as in the animals treated with zinc in combination with Paroxtine. There was no significant difference in the animals’ behavior between acute and sub-acute treatment with zinc or even upon its addition to paroxetine. Our data support the concept that co-administration of zinc may provide further antidepressant activity. Zinc may offer additional clinical value particularly in geriatric patients or other populations where zinc level has shown dramatic decrease.

Non-secretory myeloma is a rare variety of multiple myeloma. Classical techniques of chronic secretion’s research don’t find any immunoglobulin monoclonal peak in the patient’s blood. Lytic bone lesions are rare in this type of myeloma. We report the case of a patient in whom we confirmed multiple myeloma by bone marrow aspiration and we have classified stage III of Durie and Salmon in view of hypercalcemia, anemia, and lytic lesions observed. However, we could not isolate a secretion of monoclonal immunoglobulin in blood but urinary secretion was evident by proteinuria and urinary light chains. The radiographs of our patient found diffuse osteolysis and practice of sternal puncture confirmed multiple myeloma. Our case is original because of rarity on non secretory myeloma particularly with diffuse osteolytic lesion.
