Corrosion and corrosion-fatigue behavior of magnesium metal matrix composites for bio-implant applications:A review

Recently,the topic of bioresorbable metals,with much focus on magnesium for bone implant applications,has been an area of considerable investigation.Indeed,it could be argued that magnesium is the most promising biodegradable material currently being studied for use as an orthopedic skeletal fixation and joint replacement hardware.However,the fast degradation rate of magnesium-based materials in the physiological environment negatively affects their mechanical integrity and hence limits their biomedical use.The most critical conditions may occur when the implant is subjected to a corrosive physiological environment and a fluctuating load during daily activities.Hence,numerous studies have been published on the synthesis,alloying,and coating of magnesium to control degradation rate and increase strength and durability.Among the materials and strategies employed to achieve these goals,magnesium-based biocomposites have exhibited superior mechanical properties and acceptable biocompatibility.However,there is a lack of understanding of their corrosion and corrosion-fatigue behavior.Such understanding is necessary to qualify these new materials for various bio-implant applications.To this end,this paper reviews the recent advances in the corrosion and corrosion-fatigue behavior of magnesium-based biocomposites.It also provides a comprehensive discussion of different factors that influence the biocompatibility,corrosion,fatigue,and corrosion-fatigue of magnesium-based biocomposites as potential implant materials.This study emphasizes that despite the abundance of various studies on the corrosion behavior of magnesium-based biocomposites,there is an imperative need for more fatigue and corrosion-fatigue studies.

Developing a GIS-based rough fuzzy set granulation model to handle spatial uncertainty for hydrocarbon structure classification,case study:Fars domain,Iran

It is well agreed that geologic risk occurs during hydrocarbon exploration because diverse uncertainties accompany the entire hydrocarbon system parameters such as the source rock,reservoir rock,trap and seal rock.In order to overcome such attributes with uncertainties,a number of soft computing methods are used.Information granules could be provided by the Rough Fuzzy Set Granulation(RFSG)with a thorough quality evaluation.This is capable of attribute reduction that has been claimed to be essential in investigating the hydrocarbon systems.This paper is an endeavor to recommend a Geospatial Information System(GIS)-based model with the aim of categorizing the hydrocarbon structures map consistent with the uncertainty range concepts of geologic risk in the rough fuzzy sets and granular computing.The model used the RFSG for the attribute reduction by a Decision Logic language(DLlanguage).The RFSG was employed in order to classify hydrocarbon structures according to geological risk and extract the fuzzy rules with a predefined range of uncertainty.In order to assess the precisions of the fuzzy decisions on the hydrocarbon structure classification,the fuzzy entropy and fuzzy cross-entropy are applied.The proposed RFSG model applied for 62 structures as the training data,average fuzzy entropy has been calculated as 0.85,whereas the average fuzzy cross-entropy has been calculated 0.18.As it can be discerned,just seven structures had cross-entropies greater than 0.1,while three structures were larger than 0.3.It is implied that the precision of the proposed model is about 89%.The results yielded two reductions for the condition attributes and 11 fuzzy rules being filtered by the granular computing values.

Hydrological alteration and biodiversity change along the river network caused by anthropogenic activities and climate variability

Background:Population growth and intensified human activities in conjunction with climate variability continue to affect the hydrologic cycle,aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna.In this regard,understanding interactions among ecosystem functions,impacts of anthropogenic interventions and those of climate variability is vital for projecting future ecosystem responses to human activities and climate forcing.The objectives of this study are to determine the ecological flow state via eco-flow index based on discharge hydrograph,to model the ecological diversity through the Shannon diversity index,and to assess the degree of hydrologic alteration using indicators of hydrologic alteration and range of variability approach in six hydrometric stations along the Zayandeh-Rud River in central Iran.The river drains into Gavkhuni Marsh.Also,the streamflow-induced potential changes for Capoeta damascina(a cyprinid fish species of the genus Capoeta),Petroleuciscus esfahani(a small cyprinid fish)and Aphanius isfahanensis(a Cyprinodontid fish)are evaluated.The outcome is expected to assist managers with understanding the effects of anthropogenic activities and climate variability on Gavkhuni aquatic ecosystems so that management options that enhance species resilience and adaptability are outlined.Results:Human activities,a primary factor influencing the natural flow regime,caused a significant increase in the minimum flow,July to March streamflow,low pulse number,and the number of reversals in most studied stations.On the contrary,some other hydrologic indices declined in value.Reservoir impoundment,the most prominent factor among human interventions,resulted in an overall alteration degree of 74.8%in streamflow.Climate variability impacted the natural flow regime in the range of low degree hydrologic alteration(27.3%).In addition,the biodiversity of the study basin,as modeled by the Shannon diversity index,had strong relevance to the annual eco-surplus and was more sensitive to summer floods and autumn hydrological drought

Evaluation of TIGGE Ensemble Forecasts of Precipitation in Distinct Climate Regions in Iran

The application of numerical weather prediction （NWP） products is increasing dramatically. Existing reports indicate that ensemble predictions have better skill than deterministic forecasts. In this study, numerical ensemble precipitation forecasts in the TIGGE database were evaluated using deterministic, dichotomous （yes/no）, and probabilistic techniques over Iran for the period 2008-16. Thirteen rain gauges spread over eight homogeneous precipitation regimes were selected for evaluation. The Inverse Distance Weighting and Kriging methods were adopted for interpolation of the prediction values, downscaled to the stations at lead times of one to three days. To enhance the forecast quality, NWP values were post-processed via Bayesian Model Averaging. The results showed that ECMWF had better scores than other products. However, products of all centers underestimated precipitation in high precipitation regions while overestimating precipitation in other regions. This points to a systematic bias in forecasts and demands application of bias correction techniques. Based on dichotomous evaluation, NCEP did better at most stations, although all centers overpredicted the number of precipitation events. Compared to those of ECMWF and NCER UKMO yielded higher scores in mountainous regions, but performed poorly at other selected stations. Furthermore, the evaluations showed that all centers had better skill in wet than in dry seasons. The quality of post-processed predictions was better than those of the raw predictions. In conclusion, the accuracy of the NWP predictions made by the selected centers could be classified as medium over Iran, while post-processing of predictions is recommended to improve the quality.

Objective Scorpion （Hemiscorpius lepturus） stings are a public health concern in Iran, particularly in south and southwestern regions of Iran. The gold standard for the treatment of a scorpion sting is anti-venom therapy. However, immunotherapy can have serious side effects, such as anaphylactic shock （which can sometimes even lead to death）. The aim of the current study was to demonstrate the protective effect of ozone against toxicity induced by Hemiscorpius lepturus （H. lepturus） venom in mice. Methods Eight hours after the injection of ozone to the experimental design groups, the male mice were decapitated and mitochondria were isolated from five different tissues （liver, kidney, heart, brain, and spinal cord） using differential ultracentrifugation. Then, assessment of mitochondrial parameters including mitochondrial reactive oxidative species （ROS） production, mitochondrial membrane potential （MMP）, ATP level, and the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria was performed. Results Our results showed that H. lepturus venom-induced oxidative stress is related to ROS production and MMP collapse, which is correlated with cytochrome c release and ATP depletion, indicating the predisposition to the cell death signaling. Conclusion In general, ozone therapy in moderate dose can be considered as clinically effective for the treatment of H. lepturus sting as a protective and antioxidant agent.

Recombinant expression and purification of functional vascular endothelial growth factor-121 in the baculovirus expression system

Objective: To express human Vascular endothelial growth factor121(VEGF121) in insect cells. Methods: A gene construct containing VEGF was cloned in the p Fast Bac-HTA vector, followed by transformation in DH10 BAC. The recombinant bacmid was then extracted, and transfected into Sf9 insect cells. The transfected cells were harvested, and then VEGF expression was confirmed by Western blotting using specific antibodies. The tube formation assay was used for functional assessment of VEGF. Results: Our results showed that VEGF could be successfully expressed in the baculovirus system. Purified VEGF was able to stimulate in vitro tube formation of human endothelial cells. Conclusions: Results from this study demonstrated that the recombinantly-produced VEGF can be considered as a promising candidate for therapeutic purposes.

Simulating long-term effect of Hyrcanian forest loss on phosphorus loading at the sub-watershed level

Conversion of forest land to farmland in the Hyrcanian forest of northern Iran increases the nutrient input, especially the phosphorus（P） nutrient, thus impacting the water quality. Modeling the effect of forest loss on surface water quality provides valuable information for forest management. This study predicts the future impacts of forest loss between 2010 and 2040 on P loading in the Tajan River watershed at the sub-watershed level. To understand drivers of the land cover, we used Land Change Modeler（LCM） combining with the Soil Water Assessment Tool（SWAT） model to simulate the impacts of land use change on P loading. We characterized priority management areas for locating comprehensive and cost-effective management practices at the sub-watershed level. Results show that agricultural expansion has led to an intense deforestation. During the future period 2010–2040, forest area is expected to decrease by 34,739 hm^2. And the areas of pasture and agriculture are expected to increase by 7668 and 27,071 hm^2, respectively. In most sub-watersheds, P pollution will be intensified with the increase in deforestation by the year 2040. And the P concentration is expected to increase from 0.08 to 2.30 mg/L in all of sub-watersheds by the year 2040. It should be noted that the phosphorous concentration exceeds the American Public Health Association′s water quality standard of 0.2 mg/L for P in drinking water in both current and future scenarios in the Tajan River watershed. Only 30% of sub-watersheds will comply with the water quality standards by the year 2040. The finding of the present study highlights the importance of conserving forest area to maintain a stable water quality.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of sexual skills training on increasing marital satisfaction

Background and Aims: Dissatisfaction with sexual relationships can influence the marital life of people and have negative psychological effects on them. Hence, the current research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of sexual skills training on marital satisfaction. Methods: The study design was quasiexperimental with pre-test and post-test type along with a control group. The research samples included 14 couples (28 people) who were randomly divided into experimental and control groups to evaluate the effect of sexual medicine intervention. Interventions were provided to the experimental group during 9 sessions. Control group did not receive any interventions during this time. Enrich Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire (short form) was used to collect the data. Data were analyzed using SPSS, version 19, software. Results and Conclusion: The results revealed that sexual skills training increased marital satisfaction (p<0.01). Thus, based on the results obtained and the importance of sexual skills training in increasing marital satisfaction, psychotherapists and counselors are recommended to use this intervention to reduce marital problems and increase satisfaction in couples.

AIM:The most important side effect of methotrexate(MTX)is mucositis.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of turmeric extract on intestinal damage and oxidative stress in rats receiving methotrexate.METHODS:Experiments were performed on male Wistar albino rats divided into six groups.First group received normal saline orally,the second group received turmeric extract(100 mg·kg-1)orally for 30 days,the third group received turmeric extract(200 mg·kg)orally for 30 days,the fourth group received a single dose of methotrexate(20 mg·kg)i.***.at day 30,the fifth group received turmeric extract(100 mg·kg)orally for 30 days and a single dose of methotrexate(20 mg·kg)i.***.at day 30,and the sixth group received turmeric extract(200 mg·kg)orally for 30days and single dose of methotrexate(20 mg·kg)i.***.at day 30.Four days after methotrexate injection,animals were anesthetized,blood samples were taken to determine total antioxidant status(TAS)and jejunum samples were taken for glutathione peroxidase(GPx),superoxidase dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),aldehyde malondialdehyde(MDA),and histopathological assessment.RESULTS: Microscopic evaluation from intestinal tissues of the MTX treated group,showed severe villus shortening and blunting,inflammatory cell infiltration and hemorrhage in lamina propria,along with epithlial cell necrosis.Levels of SOD,GSH-Px and CAT decreased in the MTX received group,but increased significantly(P<0.05)in the turmeric+MTX groups.MTX increased lipid peroxidation,however,turmeric decreased peroxidation significantly(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:These results suggest that turmeric extract may protect the small intestine of rats from methotrexate-induced damage.Turmeric effects could result from its antioxidant properties.

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Buried Steel Pipes under Moving Loads

The three-dimensional response of buried steel pipes under vehicle loads is investigated using the finite element analysis. The analysis is conducted using the finite element program ABAQUS. The effects of the vehicle parameters, pipeline parameters and soil parameters on the response of the buried pipeline were discussed. The results indicate that the maximum principal stresses in a buried pipe under vehicle loads are significant for burial depths of less than 1 m. The maximum principal stresses of the buried pipeline decrease as the burial depth, vehicle velocity and surrounding soil’s elasticity modulus increase. For small burial depths, the stresses in buried pipes caused by vehicle motion in the direction normal to the pipe axis are more critical. However, the effects of motion direction are insignificant when the burial depth and the surrounding soil’s elasticity modulus increase. As the diameter of a buried pipe decreases, the maximum principal stresses increase.
