Study of the effects of natural toothbrush (<i>Salva-dora persica</i>) in prevention of dental caries and plaque index

Background: Nowadays, though more attention is being paid to oral and dental hygiene all over the world, dental caries and periodontal diseases are increasing daily. We decided to study the effectiveness of natural toothbrush in prevention of dental caries and plaque formation. Methods: This analytic, semi-experimental clinical trial included 390 individuals. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: using natural toothbrush, using artificial toothbrush and using both natural and artificial toothbrush. The plaque index and DMFT was assessed at the beginning of the study until 1 year. ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis, LSD, Paired t-test, chi square, Fisher exact and Mc-Nemar tests were used for data analysis. Results: The plaque index in all three groups showed a mean reduction of 0.71. The mean DMFT in the samples before intervention was 8.38 ± 4.14 and increased to 9.1 ± 4.56. At the end of the study, the lowest plaque index was observed in the group using both the natural and artificial methods. During one year follow-up, the plaque index decreased 1.16, 0.83, and 0.21 degrees in the first, second and third groups. Conclusion: The increase in DMFT in the group that used artificial toothbrush was more than other groups. Thus, use of natural toothbrush leads to a decrease in growth rate of DMFT. Therefore natural toothbrush can be used for the cleaning of teeth and prevention of dental caries.

Graphite versus graphene:plasmonic nanopore DNA sequencing

The plasmonic-based graphite-and graphene-nanopores have been investigated by employing the hybrid quantum/classical scheme(HQCS).Transverse,longitudinal,and total absorption spectra obtained from HQCS are analyzed for the graphite and graphene *** were examined for each structure in the presence of deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) *** simple excitation of the total mode in graphene nanopore shows the best selectivity for DNA sequencing.A novel method based on the transverse and longitudinal modes in a time-series approach has been proposed for selectivity *** the proposed time-series method,the outstanding results show that graphite nanopore is more sensitive than and as selective as graphene *** paper suggests that time-step analysis of the plasmonic absorption in the graphite nanopore is a promising method for DNA sequencing.

Photoabsorption analysis of metal nanoparticles by hybrid quantum/classical scheme

The hybrid quantum/classical scheme(HQCS) is used for the photoabsorption analysis of metal nanoparticles. The HQCS divides the structure of interest into quantum and classical subsystems. First, we calculate and report Lorentz parameters for gold(Au), silver(Ag), aluminum(Al), chromium(Cr), and nickel(Ni) permittivities used in the classical subsystem. Then, photoabsorption spectra were obtained from HQCS for the single nanoparticle structures with and without two sodium(Na) atoms. The Au, Ag, Al, Cr, and Ni show strong sensitivity to the presence of the atomic subsystem. This work could pave the way for how coupled plasmon modes between metal nanoparticles and atomic structures can be utilized for sensing devices.

A Model‑Based Battery Charging Optimization Framework for Proper Trade‑offs Between Time and Degradation

This study aims at developing an optimization framework for electric vehicle charging by considering different trade-offs between battery degradation and charging *** the first time,the application of practical limitations on charging and cooling power is considered along with more detailed health *** iron phosphate battery is used as a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimization framework.A coupled electro-thermal equivalent circuit model is used along with two battery health models to mathematically obtain optimal charging current profiles by considering stress factors of state-of-charge,charging rate,temperature and *** optimization results demonstrate an improvement over the benchmark constant current–constant voltage(CCCV)charging protocol when considering both the charging time and battery health.A main difference between the optimal and the CCCV charging protocols is found to be an additional ability to apply constraints and adapt to initial conditions in the proposed optimal charging *** a case study,for example,the‘optimal time’charging is found to take 12 min while the‘optimal health’charging profile suggests around 100 min for charging the battery from 25 to 75%*** other trade-off between those two extreme cases is achievable using the proposed charging protocol as well.

Electrochemical Reduction of 1,2-Di（p-tolylimino）ethane and 1,2-Di（2,4-dimethylphenylimino）ethane in Dimethylformamide

1,2-Di（p-tolylimino）ethane （Ⅰ） and 1,2-Di（2,4-dimethylphenylimino）ethane （Ⅱ） were synthesized and their electrochemical behavior investigated in dimethylformamide using classical voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, controlled potential electrolysis and coulometry. Both bis-Schiff base ligands examined show a cathodic irreversible peak which corresponds to one-electron reduction of the substrate to form anion radical. According to the fact obtained from cyclic voltammetry, that the current function （ip/v^1/2） is a decreasing function of the scan rate, it can be concluded that there is a following coupling chemical reaction （EC mechanism）. Thus, the most probable mechanism of electroreduction of both ligands is the coupling of two radicals to form a dimer.

AIM:To determine the agreement of ocular biometric indices including axial length,keratometric readings,anterior chamber depth,and horizontal corneal diameter between the Pentacam AXL and IOL Master ***:The study was a large cross-sectional population-based study(Tehran Geriatric Eye Study)conducted from Jan 2019 to Jan 2020.A total of 160 clusters were randomly selected proportional to size(each cluster contained 20 individuals)from 22 strata of Tehran *** people aged 60y and above were invited to participate in the *** all participants,preliminary ocular examinations were performed including the measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity,objective and subjective refraction,anterior and posterior segment *** participants underwent an ocular biometry using the Pentacam AXL and IOL Master ***:The 95%limits of agreement(LoA)between the two devices were-0.13 to 0.19,-0.15 to 0.17,and-0.13 to 0.19 in normal,pseudophakic,and cataractous eyes,*** increasing the axial length,the difference between the two devices significantly increased in all three groups of normal,pseudophakic,and cataractous eyes(P<0.001).The 95% LoAs between the two devices regarding the mean keratometry shows that the best LoAs were seen in cataractous(-0.33 to 0.81)and followed by normal eyes(-0.36 to 0.86)and the pseudophakic eyes(-0.48 to 0.90)had the widest *** 95% LoAs for horizontal corneal diameter measurements were-0.08 to 0.86,-0.03 to 0.83,and-0.07 to 0.87 in normal,pseudophakic,and cataractous eyes,*** 95% LoAs of anterior chamber depth measurements between the two devices was-0.39 to 0.19 and-0.37 to 0.13 in normal eyes and cataractous,***:The Pentacam AXL has excellent agreement with the gold standard,IOL Master 500 in measuring axial *** eyes with cataracts,the difference between the two devices is more *** the increasing of axial length,the difference between the

AIM:To evaluate the diagnostic ability of topographic and tomographic indices with Pentacam and Sirius as well as biomechanical parameters with Corvis ST for the detection of clinical and subclinical forms of keratoconus(KCN).METHODS:In this prospective diagnostic test study,70 patients with clinical KCN,79 patients with abnormal findings in topography and tomography maps with no evidence on clinical examination(subclinical KCN),and 68 normal control subjects were *** accuracy of topographic,tomographic,and biomechanical parameters was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)and cross-validation *** Delong method was used for comparing ***:In distinguishing KCN from normal,all parameters showed statistically significant differences between the two groups(P0.05).CONCLUSION:In clinical KCN,all topographic,tomographic,and biomechanical indices have acceptable outcomes in terms of sensitivity and ***,in differentiating subclinical forms of KCN from normal corneas,curvature-based parameters(SIb and IS value)followed by integrated indices(PRFI and TBI)are the most powerful tools for early detection of KCN.

Open globe injuries in geriatric population in Iran: characteristics and outcomes

AIM:To investigate the patterns and outcomes of open globe injuries in the elderly population in ***:In this retrospective cross-sectional chart review,medical records of 248 patients(aged 60 y and more)with the diagnosis of open globe injury from 2006 to 2016 were *** features,type,and mechanism of open globe injury,ocular trauma score(OTS),visual acuity before and after treatment,the zone of injuries,and the associated injuries found at the presentation or thereafter were ***:A total of 248 eyes of 248 patients were *** mean age was 69.2±5.8 y(range:60-90 y).Male/female ratio was about 3:1(187 vs 61).The three most common causes of injury were falling(25.2%),sharp objects(18.9%),and tree branches(13.9%).Penetrating injury accounted for most of the geriatric ocular trauma(50.4%),followed by globe rupture(40.3%),intraocular foreign body(IOFB;7.3%),and perforating injury(2.0%).The median raw OTS for the population was 60.5 and the most common OTS class was *** injuries tend to affect zoneⅠmore than zoneⅡand zoneⅢ.The only predictor of final visual acuity was the class of OTS(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Geriatric open globe injury should be valued *** most common type of open globe injury in Iran is penetrating injuries but falling remain the main *** OTS class must be considered as an important predictor of final visual acuity.

Distribution of intraocular pressure and its determinants in an Iranian adult population

AIMTo determine the distribution of intraocular pressure (IOP) and its determinants in an Iranian *** a cross-sectional survey, random cluster sampling was conducted from the 40-64 years old population of Shahroud, in the north of Iran. All participants had optometry and ophthalmic exams. IOP was determined using the Goldmann tonometry method and biometric components were *** the 6311 people selected for the study, 5190 (82.2%) participated. The mean age of the participants was 50.9±6.2y and 58.7% of them were female. Mean IOP was 12.87±2.27 mm Hg. In this study 0.3% of the participants had an IOP higher than 21 mm Hg. The multiple linear regression model revealed that sex (Coef=-0.30; 95% CI: -0.43 to -0.17), diabetes (Coef=0.43; 95% CI: 0.19 to 0.67), high systolic blood pressure (Coef=0.02; 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.02), high body mass index (BMI) (Coef=0.03; 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.04), higher education (Coef=0.02, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.04), thicker central corneal thickness (Coef=0.01; 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.02), and myopic shift in spherical equivalent (Coef=-0.14; 95% CI: -0.18 to -0.10) significantly correlated with high *** IOP in this 40-64 years old population is low overall. In the north of Iran, average IOP is statistically significantly correlated with female sex, diabetes, higher BMI, systolic blood pressure, higher education, thicker cornea, and myopic refractive error.
