Efficacy of Postoperative Adjuvant Chemotherapy According to Prognostic Factor in Patients with Stage III Colon Cancer

Background: We retrospectively identified prognostic factors in patients with Stage III colon cancer and considered the effectiveness of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy based on these prognostic factors. Methods: Two hundred and thirty four patients with lymph node metastases who underwent curative surgery for colon cancer between 1999 and 2005 were enrolled in the present study. Firstly, clinicopathological factors and survival data, were analyzed to determine prognostic factors related to cancer-specific survival. Secondly, we examined the effectiveness of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy based upon these prognostic factors. Results: The multivariate analysis revealed that differentiation (P = 0.03, Hazard ratio = 2.50), lymphatic invasion (P = 0.02, Hazard ratio = 3.23) and the TNM classification, 7th?edition (P = 0.04, Hazard ratio = 1.94) were found to be significant independent prognostic factors. Among the patients classified as TNM IIIA, the recurrence-free survival rates were extremely good. Among the patients classified as IIIB and IIIC, there was no significant difference between the patients with and without postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: The present study suggests that the patients with Stage IIIA colon cancer may not require postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. The addition of oxaliplatin to 5-FU should be considered for the patients with Stage IIIB and IIIC colon cancer, for whom the prognoses are far from satisfactory.

尿素施于土壤表层会造成氨的损失,从而导致无机肥料的无效利用。氨损失受到酸性物质如重过磷酸钙、腐植酸或黄腐酸的影响。为了减少氨损失和吸附土壤中的铵态氮及可利用硝态氮,同时生产有机肥料,开展了此实验,该实验比较了不同混合物,尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾、尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-腐植酸、尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-黄腐酸、尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-酸化(黄腐酸+腐植酸)在氨损失,土壤pH值,铵态氮和可利用硝态氮积累等方面的影响,以尿素单独施用作为对照。方法:在实验室的条件下,利用一个封闭式动态空气流量系统来评估是否混有重过磷酸钙、氯化钾、腐植酸、黄腐酸的情况下尿素的有效性。氨损失、土壤pH值、土壤中铵态氮以及可利用硝态氮是由标准程序测定的。结果:与对照组(单独施用尿素)相比,处理尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾,尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-腐植酸,尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-黄腐酸,尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-酸化(腐植酸+黄腐酸)中氨损失明显地减少,减少率由1 2 92%、20.1 2%、25.94%达到100%,土壤中的铵态氮也有类似的变化。从所有的处理来看,只有尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-黄腐酸,尿素-重过磷酸钙-氯化钾-酸化(腐植酸+黄腐酸)明显地积累了土壤中可利用硝态氮,这一结果与本研究中pH值的结果相一致。应该强调的是,本试验利用的是育湿润级育土(Bekenu系列),属于酸性土壤(pH6.32),该试验结果可能只适用于类似的酸性土壤中。结论:尿素、重过磷酸钙、氯化钾中混合腐植酸或者酸性的腐植酸和黄腐酸混合物能够显著减少氨损失。这项研究结果有助于尿素中N,P,K使用有效性的提高,同时减少了环境污染。

Effect of TiO2 Crystallite Diameter on Photocatalytic Water Splitting Rate

The effect of (Pt-loaded)TiO2 crystallite diameter (i.e. Scherrer size) on the photocatalytic water splitting rate was investigated. (Pt-loaded)TiO2 powders with a wide range of crystallite diameters from about 16 to 45 nm with a blank region between about 23 and 41 nm were prepared by various annealing processes from an identical TiO2 powder. Water splitting experiments with these powders were carried out with methanol as an oxidizing sacrificial agent. It was found that the photocatalytic water splitting rate was sensitively affected by the crystallite diameter of the (Pt-loaded)TiO2 powder. More concretely, similar steep improvements of photocatalytic water splitting rates from around 15 and a little over 2 to about 30 μmol·m-2hr-1?were obtained in the two (Pt-loaded)TiO2 crystallite diameters ranging from 16 to 23 and from 41 to 45 nm, respectively.

Enhancement of Photocatalytic Water Splitting Rate via Rayleigh Convection

In order to enhance photocatalytic water splitting rates with Pt/TiO2 powder, sufficient agitation of the biphasic medium is required to switch surficial reactions to volumetric reactions. Additionally, agitation is conducive to higher diffusion rates of the generated hydrogen and co-produced oxygen, hindering their ability to re-couple to water on Pt loaded to TiO2 powder. In order to create agitation without consuming any electricity, a novel technique utilizing Rayleigh convection was applied, and its ability to enhance photocatalytic water splitting rates was evaluated. Higher Rayleigh convective flow rates resulted in higher photocatalytic water splitting rates. Utilization of Rayleigh convection approximately doubled the photocatalytic water splitting rates, despite relatively low convective flow velocities (obtained through simple thermo-hydrodynamic simulations). The rate enhancement achieved through Rayleigh convection is a result of its ability to disperse the ultrafine Pt/TiO2 particles throughout the whole medium, leading to volumetric reactions.

Prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia among blood donors in Sokoto,North Western,Nigeria

Objective:To investigate the prevalence and socio-demographic factors associated with iron deficiency anaemia among blood donors in Sokoto,North Western,Nigeria using a combination of haemoglobin haematocrit and serum ferritin ***:One hundred and fifty consecutively recruited whole blood donors,comprising of 148(98.7%)family replacement donors and 2(1.3%)voluntary non-remunerated donors aged 18-60 years and mean age 39±21 years constituted the subjects for this *** full blood count was carried out using Mythic 22 CT fully automated haematology analyser(Orphee SA,Switzerland).Serum was tested for ferritin using a human ferritin enzyme immunoassay kit-ACCU Diag^(™)ELISA Ferritin kit(Diagnostic Automation/Cortez Diagnostic ***,USA).Results:The prevalence of anaemia(haemoglobin<11.0 g/dL)was evident in 24(16%)and iron deficiency anaemia(serum ferritin<12 ng/mL+haemoglobin<11 g/dL)in 5(10%)of *** haemoglobin and ferritin levels was significantly lower among regular voluntary remunerated blood donors(13.50±0.00 and 34.88±0.00)compared to family replacement donors(14.10±2.40 and 74.12±45.20)respectively(P=0.01 and 0.05 respectively).The mean haemoglobin and ferritin level was compared among donors based on *** haemoglobin and ferritin was significantly higher among male donors(14.20±2.00,78.02±49.10)compared to female donors(12.35±2.5 and 42.20±32.13)(P=0.01).The mean haemoglobin and ferritin level was compared among donors based on occupational *** haemoglobin and ferritin was significantly higher among civil servants compared to farmers and students(P=0.01).Conclusions:Iron deficiency anaemia is prevalent among blood donors in Sokoto,North Western,*** is need to include routine ferritin in the blood donor testing protocol in the area to enable the diagnosis of donors with latent iron deficiency anaemia to facilitate iron supplementation for regular blood donors at risk and those with iron deficiency anaemia

Seroprevalence of and Risk Factors for Cytomegalovirus among HIV-Infected Patients at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Nigeria

Although the distribution of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has a wide regional variation, it is more common in Africa and Asia with high prevalence approaching 100% in some communities. CMV is a frequent opportunistic infection and major cause of morbidity and mortality among HIV patients with severe immunosuppression. It can be contracted from body fluid, including saliva, urine, blood, cervical secretions, and semen. CMV seropositivity is considered the best laboratory measure of past infection. We determined the prevalence of CMV and the risk factors associated with its acquisition in a population of HIV positive patients. Anti-CMV IgG seroprevalence was 100% among HIV infected subjects and 98.6% among controls. Having multiple sexual partners and traditional practices were identified as risk factors associated with risk of contracting CMV infection.

The Cretaceous shallow marine Gboko limestone, Yandev, Nigeria is a component of the sedimentary fill of the 800 km NE-SW trending Benue Trough, Nigeria. The limestone is made up of thin bedded to massive limestone beds interspersed with laminated grey shale having foraminifera as the dominant fossil. The limestone has both mud supported and grain supported texture, and micrites constitute about 75% of the limestone. Bulk chemical composition analysis of the limestone reveals average CaCO3 of 92.41% and a range of 77.50% - 99.00%. Mineralogical impurities include quartz, dolomite, pyrrhotite, fluorapatite etc. Trace elements concentration analysis was carried out using Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDXRF) spectrophotometry and showed the following trace elements: Mn (841.3 ppm), Sr (444.6 ppm), Fe (470 ppm), Zn (114.6 ppm) and Pb (116.4 ppm). Calcining the limestone in a laboratory muffle furnace at 1050°C for 90 minutes produced a compact, soft burnt porous and reactive lime that does not crumble into fines. The lime so produced neither meets the requirements of the Steel Making Shop (SMS) of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant nor could it be used in the growing sugar refining industry in Nigeria. It can however be used in the food and the food by-products industry, environmental, agricultural and petroleum industries etc. The raw stone remains a major source of raw materials for cement manufacture for the ever expanding building industry.

Presentation of Undescended Testis to a Paediatric Referal Centre in Jos

Background: Undescended testis is the commonest disorder affecting the male urogenital tract. Late presentation has significant socio-medical impact on the individual’s quality of life. Aim: To evaluate the presentation of undescended testis and age at surgery in our centre. Methods: A 9-year retrospective analysis of the clinical records of patients Results: A total of 73 records were analysed, 58 (79.5%) presented > 1 year. Median age at presentation was 4 years, range 1 day - 16 years. Males 73 (100%), only 17 (23.3%) were referred by health personnel, while 56 (76.7%) self-referred. Commonest site involved was the left 33 (45.2%), 29 (39.7%) right and 11 (15.1%) bilateral. There were 13 (17.4%) who had associated congenital malformations. Hypospadias 7 (53.8%), isolated micropenis 4 (30.8%) and 1 each (7.7%) had myelomeningocele and hernia. Median age at presentation for bilateral involvement was 30 days, with associated hypospadias was 12 days, while those with isolated micropenis was 7.5 years. Median age at surgery for bilateral involvement was 2 years, overall median age at surgery was 4 years. Surgery Findings: Supra-scrotal testis 47, canalicular 25 (34.2%), and bilateral abdominal 1 (1.4%). Outcome: Wound infections 4 (5.5%), scrotal wound breakdown 1, Recurrence 3 and testicular atrophy 1. <

Compounds containing Cr (VI) ion are widely used for chemical industry, paints, dyes, and other applications. Because of commonly known toxicity of Cr (VI) ion, Cr (VI) is one of the important check items for quality of water in natural river or industrial waste water. Although the only method for selective detection for Cr (VI) ion is diphenylcarbazide, of which pretreatment spends long time according to the regulations by the Ministry of Environment, Japan. Herein we develop a new and simple pretreatment for the job site and suitable for education and attempt to apply for analysis of the soil in Tama River actually.
