Perceptions About Climate Change in the Brazilian Civil Defense Sector

Few studies have analyzed climate change perceptions in the disaster risk management *** research aimed to understand how civil defense experts are dealing with the climate change topic:what they learn and think *** online survey was conducted between October and December 2021 with 1,063 participants from civil defense agencies in *** findings indicate:(1) most(80.6%) civil defense officers completely agreed that climate change will cause additional challenges to disaster risk management,while 10.1% stated that they are prepared to deal with it;(2) one quarter of the respondents(26.3%) completely agreed that they easily understand the information about climate change,but trust in the sources of information is a challenge-52.4% completely agreed and 40.5% partially agreed with information provided by scientists,but the levels of trust were reduced when referring to governments and press;and(3) about 30% of the respondents thought that civil defense work is associated with the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),despite SDGs 11 and 13 being related to disasters and climate *** identification of civil defense’ perceptions on climate change is an important step in seeking pathways for increasing capacity building to achieve disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Laminar screw fixation in the subaxial cervical spine: A report on three cases

Although laminar screw fixation is often used at the C2 and C7 levels, only few previous case reports have presented the use of laminar screws at the C3-C6 levels. Here, we report a novel fixation method involving the use of practical laminar screws in the subaxial spine. We used laminar screws in the subaxial cervical spine in two cases to prevent vertebral artery injury and in one case to minimize exposure of the lamina. This laminar screw technique was successful in all three cases with adequate spinal rigidity, which was achieved without complications. The use of laminar screws in the subaxial cervical spine is a useful option for posterior fusion of the cervical spine.

Effect of microstructures on superplasticity of Al-11%Si alloy

Three kinds of Al-11%Si (mass fraction) alloy samples with different processes were produced to investigate the effect of microstructures on its superplasticity. Among them, the as-ECAP sample pressed 16 passes has ultrafine grains (300 nm) and the finest secondary particles. The ECAP-T6 sample, with ECAP 16 passes followed by T6 treatment, has fine secondary particles (3 μm) but the largest grains (8 μm). Contrarily, the T6-ECAP sample, with T6 treatment followed by ECAP 16 passes, has ultrafine grains and the large secondary particles (7 μm). The tensile testing results show that the as-ECAP sample exhibits superplasticity at high strain rate of 5.75×10-1 s-1 due to its fine secondary particles and ultrafine grains. The ECAP-T6 sample, however, does not exhibit superplasticity at the same high strain rate of 5.75×10-1 s-1 because it has relatively large secondary particles and large grains. Remarkably, the T6-ECAP sample does not have superplasticity even at the lower strain rate of 1.15×10-1 s-1, attributing to its comparatively large secondary particles. When most secondary particles are larger than 7 μm, the high strain rate superplasticity could not be obtained even if this sample has ultrafine grains.

On-treatment predictions of success in peg-interferon/ribavirin treatment using a novel formula

AIM:To predict treatment success using only simple clinical data from peg-interferon plus ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C. METHODS:We analyzed the clinical data of 176 patients with chronic hepatitis and hepatitis C virus genotype 1 who received 48 wk standard therapy, derived a predictive formula to assess a sustained virological response of the individual patient using a logistic regression model and confirmed the validity of this *** formula was constructed using data from the first 100 patients enrolled and validated using data from the remaining 76 patients. RESULTS:Sustained virological response was obtained in 83(47.2%)of the patients and we derived formulae to predict sustained virological response at pretreatment and weeks 4,12 and *** likelihood of sustained virological response could be predicted effectively bythe formulae at weeks 4,12 and 24(the area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic:0.821, 0.802,and 0.891,respectively),but not at baseline (0.570).The formula at week 48 was also constructed and validation by test data achieved good prediction with 0.871 of the area under the curve of the receiver operating *** by this formula was always superior to that by viral kinetics. CONCLUSION:These results suggested that our formula combined with viral kinetics provides a clear direction of therapy for each patient and enables the best tailored treatment.

One-step facile synthesis of Pd nanoclusters supported on carbon and their electrochemical property

Well-crystallized Pd nanoclusters supported on Ketjen Black(KB) were successfully fabricated when Pd wires were served as an electrode pair by a solution plasma technique at atmospheric pressure. The synthesis of Pd nanoclusters was almost simultaneous with their dispersion on *** nanoclusters with the average diameter of about 2 nm were equably distributed on KB, and showed good electrochemical property corresponding to their obvious characteristic peaks. Multi-scan cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry clarified that as-prepared Pd nanoclusters have better electrochemical stability in alkaline solution than that of in acidic solution. Thus as-obtained Pd nanoclusters would become a promising electrocatalyst for fuel cells or Li-air batteries.

Mg-Al layered double hydroxide intercalated with CO_(3)^(2-)(CO_(3)·Mg-Al LDH) is effective for treating HCl exhaust *** reacts with CO_(3)^(2-) in CO_(3)·Mg-Al LDH, resulting in the formation of Cl·Mg-Al *** propose that CO_(2) can be used for the desorption of Cl^(-)from Cl·Mg-Al LDH to regenerate CO_(3)·Mg-Al ***,we studied the desorption of a from CI-Mg-Al LDH by adding water to Cl·Mg-Al LDH and blowing CO_(2) into *** also analyzed the effects of temperature and water addition speed on the desorption of CI^(-)from Cl·Mg-Al *** results show that the added water adhered to CI·Mg-Al LDH and that CO_(2) in the gaseous phase was dissolved in this adhered water,thus generating CO_(3)^(2-).Therefore,anion exchange occurred between CO_(3)^(2-) and Cl^(-)in the Cl·Mg-Al LDH,thus desorbing Cl^(-).

Hepatic angiosarcoma with clinical and histological features of Kasabach-Merritt syndrome

Hepatic angiosarcoma is a mesenchymal tumor originating from liver sinusoidal endothelial cells. It is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm accounting for less than 1% of primary malignant liver tumors. The deregulated coagulopathy that can be seen in hepatic angiosarcoma fulfills the clinical diagnostic criteria of disseminated intravascular coagulation. However, the mechanism that governs this coagulopathy has been poorly understood. This case report provides histological evidence of the consumption of coagulation factors along with trapped platelets occurring within the tumor, which is the foundation for the concept of Kasabach-Merritt syndrome(KMS). KMS is characterized by thrombocytopenia and hyperconsumption of coagulation factors within a vascular tumor. However, KMS associated with angiosarcoma has not been well recognized. This case report describes, for the first time, the histological evidence of KMS that occurred in an extremely rare mesenchymal malignant tumor of the liver.

Toxicity of perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate

Persistent perfluorinated organic compounds, such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are used in a variety of industrial applications. They are very stable in the environment, distribute widely in the global environment and in wild life, and are detected in human sera. Our searches have detected ppt levels of PFOS and PFOA in the surface water of Japan and China; their levels are generally more than ten times higher in city areas. Neither PFOS nor PFOA is removed by the purification process of city water. Both PFOS and PFOA are detected in sera of all the people of Japan and China (about 1000 times as high as those in surface water), and their concentrations are increasing in both countries, especially in China. PFOS and PFOA primarily distribute to the liver and cause the liver toxicity. They also cause developmental toxicity. PFOS which is not genotoxic in a variety of assay system including our in vivo comet assay, induced tumors of the liver, thyroid and mammary gland of rats. PFOA which is weakly carcinogenic is not mutagenic in many studies including our in vivo comet assay.

BACKGROUND Relapsing polychondritis(RP)is a rare inflammatory disease involving the systemic cartilage,such as the auricle,trachea,and bronchiole,among others.A patient with RP shows variable symptoms based on the involved *** SUMMARY A 72-year-old Japanese woman with a history of redness of the bilateral auricles for 3 d was referred to a *** clinician prescribed antibiotics to the patient;however,the symptoms worsened;thus,she was referred to our *** and neck magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed edematous auricle with remarkable contrast,fluid collection in the bilateral mastoid cells,suggesting otitis *** eustachian tube(ET)on the right side was also edematous with contrast *** patient was suspected of RP according to the diagnostic criteria.A biopsy of the auricular cartilage was performed by an otorhinolaryngologist,confirming pathological proof of *** with steroids were immediately administered *** We highlight a rare case of RP with radiologically confirmed involvement of ET in the MRI.
