Spatial Distribution of Black Soot and Its Health Effects in port Harcourt Metropolis, Nigeria

This research presents a novel approach to assessing the health implications of black soot using a MiniVol air *** MiniVol air sampler was used to collect pM from the ambient air at six monitoring sites in port Harcourt,*** was conducted every day for seven days,for a period of 24 ***_(2.5) concentrations at Uniport Junction,GRA Junction,Slaughter Roundabout,Abuloma Jetty,Rumuomasi Roundabout,and New Road Borokiri were 38.6 g/m^(3),28.3 g/m^(3),93.7 g/m^(3),72.9 g/m^(3),30.6 g/m^(3),and 31.3 g/m^(3),***_(10) concentrations ranged from 71.2 g/m^(3) to 60.6 g/m^(3),with 103.3 g/m^(3),85.5 g/m^(3),40.1 g/m^(3),and 35.2 g/m^(3) being the *** level of pM_(2.5) and pM_(10) pollution in the ambient air was high across the six sampling sites,with mean pM_(2.5) and pM_(10) concentrations exceeding the WHO(2011)*** flame atomic absorption spectrometry(FAAS)technique was *** presence of heavy metals,such as mean metal concentrations of lead,cadmium,chromium,mercury,and nickel,ranged from 0.009 g/m^(3)-0.532 g/m^(3),0.002 g/m^(3)-0.544 g/m^(3),0.002 g/m^(3)-0.338 g/m^(3),0.001 g/m^(3),and 0.001 g/m^(3)-0.432 g/m^(3),across the six sampling *** GC-MS was used to determine the presence of pAHs in particulate *** results revealed a strong positive correlation between pM_(2.5) and pM_(10).The findings also revealed a positive relationship between the metals as well as between the metals and pAHs,resulting in asthma,lung cancer,breathing difficulties,and miscarriages among pregnant women,which have affected the health implications of the people living in the environment.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects approximately 200 million people worldwide. Interferon-based therapies have dominated over the past two decades. However, the overall response rates remain suboptimal. Thanks to the tremendous effort from both academia and industry, two serine protease inhibitors telaprevir and boceprevir for treating chronic hepatitis C have finally reached the clinic. Although these compounds are only approved for combination use with interferon and ribavirin in genotype 1 HCV infected chronic patients, the management of HCV patients however is now evolving incredibly. Here, we overviewed a series of landmark studies, regarding the clinical development of telaprevir and boceprevir. We discussed the mechanism-of-action of telaprevir/boceprevir and their potential application in HCV-positive liver transplantation patients. We further emphasized some emerging concerns with perspective of further development in this field.

Acquiring a comprehensive and accurate understanding of habitat preference is essential for species conservation and fishery management,especially for mobile species that migrate *** and absence data from field surveys are recommended when available due to their high *** field survey data,we investigated seasonal habitat suitability requirements for Tanaka's snailfish(Liparis tanakae)in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea(BSYS)via a machine-learning method,random forests(RFs).Five environmental and biologically relevant variables(bottom temperature,bottom salinity,current velocity,depth and distance to shore)were used to build the ecological niches between the presence/absence data and suitable *** addition,the degree to which false absence data might impact model performance was *** results indicated that RFs provided accurate predictions,with seasonal habitat suitability maps of *** differing *** temperature and salinity were identified as important factors influencing the distribution of *** absence data were found to have negative effects on model performance and the decrease in evaluation metrics was usually significant(pphic range,our study provides a baseline for *** that can be further applied in ecosystem modelling and fishery management in the BSYS.

For robust nonlinear wave simulation in a moving reference frame, we recast the free surface problem in Hamilton-Jacobi form and propose a Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory （WENO） scheme to automatically handle the upwinding of the convective term. A new automatic procedure for deriving the linear WENO weights based on a Taylor series expansion is introduced. A simplified smoothness indicator is proposed and is shown to perform well. The scheme is combined with high-order explicit Runge-Kutta time integration and a dissipative Lax-Friedrichs-type flux to solve for nonlinear wave propagation in a moving frame of reference. The WENO scheme is robust and less dissipative than the equivalent order upwind-biased finite difference scheme for all ratios of frame of reference to wave propagation speed tested. This provides the basis for solving general nonlinear wave-structure interaction problems at forward speed.

Expansive soils cause problems with the founding of lightly loaded structures in many parts of the world. Foundation design for expansive soils is one of the most discussed and problematic issues in Australia as expansive soils were responsible for billions of dollars＇ worth of damage to man-made structures such as buildings and roads. Several studies and reports indicate that one of the most common and least recognized problems causing severe structural damage to houses lies in expansive soils. In this study, a critical review has been carried out on the current Australian standards for building on expansive soils and they are compared with some techniques that are not included in the current Australian standards for residential slabs and footings. Based on the results of this review, the most effective and economical method has been proposed for construction of footings on all site classifications without restriction to 75mm of characteristic movement. In addition, it has become apparent that as design procedures for footings resting on sites with extreme characteristic movements are not included in the current Australian standards, there is a strong need for well-developed and simplified standard design procedures for characteristic soil movement of greater than 75mm to be included into the Australian Standards.

3D U-Net Segmentation Improves Root System Reconstruction from 3D MRI Images in Automated and Manual Virtual Reality Work Flows

Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)is used to image root systems grown in opaque ***,reconstruction of root system architecture(RSA)from 3-dimensional(3D)MRI images is *** resolution and poor contrast-to-noise ratios(CNRs)hinder automated ***,manual reconstruction is still widely ***,we evaluate a novel 2-step work flow for automated RSA *** the first step,a 3D U-Net segments MRI images into root and soil in *** the second step,an automated tracing algorithm reconstructs the root systems from the segmented *** evaluated the merits of both steps for an MRI dataset of 8 lupine root systems,by comparing the automated reconstructions to manual reconstructions of unaltered and segmented MRI images derived with a novel virtual reality *** found that the U-Net segmentation offers profound benefits in manual reconstruction:reconstruction speed was doubled(+97%)for images with low CNR and increased by 27%for images with high *** root lengths were increased by 20%and 3%,***,we propose to use U-Net segmentation as a principal image preprocessing step in manual work *** root length derived by the tracing algorithm was lower than in both manual reconstruction methods,but segmentation allowed automated processing of otherwise not readily usable MRI ***,model-based functional root traits revealed similar hydraulic behavior of automated and manual *** studies will aim to establish a hybrid work flow that utilizes automated reconstructions as scaffolds that can be manually corrected.
