Elastic and Viscoelastic Poisson’s Ratios: Th. Th.oretical Mech.nics Perspective

A recent review publication presented an extensive and compreh.nsive assessment of th. ph.nomenological relations of Poisson’s ratios (PRs) to th. beh.vior and responses of contemporary materials under specific loading conditions. Th. present review and analysis paper is intended as a th.oretical mech.nics complement covering math.matical and ph.sical modeling of a single original elastic and of six time and process (i.e. path.and stress) dependent viscoelastic PR definitions as well as a seventh.special path.independent one. Th. implications and consequences of such.models on material ch.racterization are analyzed and summarized. Indeed, PRs based on experimentally obtained 2-D strains under distinct creep and/or relaxation processes exh.bit radically different time responses for identical material specimen. Th.se results confirm th. PR’s implicit path.dependence in addition to th.ir separate intrinsic time reliance. Such.non-uniqueness of viscoelastic PRs renders th.m unsuitable as universal material descriptors. Analytical formulations and experimental measurements also examine th. ph.sical impossibility of instantaneously ach.eving time independent loads or strains or th.ir rates th.s making certain PR definitions based on constant state variables, wh.le math.matically valid, ph.sically unrealistic and unach.evable. A newly developed th.oretical/experimental protocol for th. determination of th. time wh.n loading patterns reach.stead-state conditions based on strain accelerations demonstrates th. capability to measure th.s time from experimental data. Due to th. process dependent PRs, i.e. stress and stress h.story path., th. non-existence of a unique viscoelastic PR and of a universal elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle or analogy (EVCP) in terms of PRs is demonstrated. Additionally and independently, th. required double convolution integral construction of linear viscoelastic constitutive relations with.th. inclusion of PRs is cumbersome analytically

Petrograph.c and geoch.mical ch.racterization of seep carbonate from Alaminos Canyon,Gulf of Mexico

Seep carbonates were collected from th. Alaminos Canyon lease area, Gulf of Mexico. Th. carbonates are present as slabs and blocks. Bivalve sh.ll and foraminifer are th. dominant bioclasts in carbonate. Pores are common and usually filled with.acicular aragonite crystals. XRD investigation sh.ws th.t aragonite is th. dominate mineral (98%). Peloids, clotted microfabirc and botryoidal aragonite are de-veloped in carbonate and suggest a genesis linked with.bacterial degradation of th. h.drocarbons. Th. δ13C value of bioclasts in carbonate is from-4.9‰ to-0.6‰, indicating th.t th. carbon source is mainly from sea water as well as th. small portion incorporation of th. seep h.drocarbon. Th. microcrystalline and sparite aragonite sh.ws th. δ13C value from-31.3‰ to-23.4‰, suggesting th.t th.ir carbon is derived mainly from microbial degradation of crude oil. 14C analyses give th. radiocarbon age of about 10 ka. Rare earth.elements (REE) analyses of th. 5% h.O3-treated solution of th. carbonates sh.w th.t th. total REE content of th. carbonates is low, th.t is from 0.752 to 12.725 μg·g-1. Th. sh.le-normalized REE patterns sh.w significantly negative Ce anomalies. Th.s suggests th.t cold seep carbonate is most likely formed in a relatively aerobic environment.

Climate ch.nge and plague h.story in Europe

Previous research.th.t reported th. linkage between climate ch.nge and plague activity primarily refers to th. immediate effect of sh.rt-term climatic variation. Yet, decades of discussion about th. climate-plague association cannot determine th. precise role of climate in sh.ping plague dynamics. One reason for th.s discrepancy originates from th. narrow selection of spatio-temporal settings for compreh.nsive analysis of th. correlation, leading to a limited consideration of th. complexity of possible *** analyzing a 414-year long record of plague outbreak in pre-industrial Europe and th. corresponding climatic data in multi-scale,we find little evidence to support climate-plague correlation in(1) both.climatic variations and large-scale climatic ph.nomena,(2)both.country scale and continental scale,(3) annual to inter-annual scale, and(4) both.linear and non-linear analytic approach.s. Th. null-result sh.uld not be viewed as a general rejection of oth.r recent findings related to climate-plague association; neverth.less,it suggests th.t a wider consideration of scales, sensitivity ch.cks and consideration of contexts sh.uld be included in explaining and predicting plague transmission under contemporary global climate conditions.

Clinical,serological and genetic predictors of inflammatory bowel disease course

Quantitative analysis of th. impact of drough.s and floods on internal wars in Ch.na over th. last 500 years

Alth.ugh.many large-N quantitative studies h.ve evidenced th. adverse effects of climatic extremes on social stability in Ch.na during th. h.storical period, most of th.m rely on temperature and precipitation as major explanatory variables, wh.le th. influence of floods and drough.s on social crises is rarely measured. Furth.rmore, a comparison of th. climate-society nexus among different geograph.c regions and at different temporal scales is missing in th.se studies. To address th.s knowledge gap,th.s study examines quantitatively th. influence of floods and drough.s on internal wars in th.ee agro-ecological(rice, wh.at,and pastoral) regions in Ch.na in AD1470–1911. Poisson regression and wavelet transform coh.rence analyses are applied to allow for th. non-linear and non-stationary nature of th. climate-war nexus. Results sh.w th.t floods and drough.s are significant in driving internal wars in h.storical Ch.na, but are ch.racterized by strong regional variation. In th. rice region, floods trigger internal wars at th. inter-annual and multi-decadal time scales. In th. wh.at region, both.floods and drough.s cause internal wars at th. inter-annual and multi-decadal time scales. In th. pastoral region, internal wars are associated with.floods only at th. multi-decadal time scale. In addition, th. multi-decadal coh.rence between h.dro-climatic extremes and internal wars in all th.ee of th. agro-ecological regions is only significant in periods in wh.ch.population density is increasing or th. upper limit of regional carrying capacity is being reach.d. Th. above results imply th.t th. climate-war nexus is mediated by regional geograph.c factors such.as ph.sical environmental setting and population pressure. h.nce, we encourage research.rs wh. study th. h.storical h.man-climate relationsh.p to boil down data according to geograph.c regions in th. course of statistical analysis and to examine each.region individually in follow-up studies.

Environmental factors affecting degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA) by In2O3 nanoparticles

Th. major products of th. interaction between trieth.l ph.sph.te and 3-fluoropropanoyl ch.oride at room temperature are dieth.l (E)-1-(3-fluoropropanoyloxy)-3-fluoroprop-1-enylph.sph.nate (3) and dieth.l l-(dieth.xyph.sph.ryl)-3-fluoropropyl ph.sph.te (4). Th. compounds 3 and 4 were separated by ch.omatograph., and structurally ch.racterized by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy (1h. 13C, 19F and 31P) and mass spectrometry. Possible reaction mech.nisms are proposed. Th. major products 3 and 4 were tested for insecticidal activity. 3 gave 100% control of Musca domestica L. and Ph.edon coch.edriae Fab. at a dose of 20 μg/per insect.
