We report the extraordinary result of rapid fibre Bragg grating inscription in doped polymer optical fibres based on polymethyl methacrylate in only 7 ms,which is two orders of magnitude faster than the inscription times previously *** was achieved using a new dopant material,diphenyl disulphide,which was found to enable a fast,positive refractive index change using a low ultraviolet *** changes were investigated and found to arise from photodissociation of the diphenyl disulphide molecule and subsequent molecular *** demonstrate that gratings inscribed in these fibres can exhibit at least a 15 times higher sensitivity than silica glass fibre,despite their quick inscription *** a demonstration of the sensitivity,we selected a highly stringent situation,namely,the monitoring of a human heartbeat and respiratory *** findings could permit the inscription of fibre Bragg gratings during the fibre drawing process for mass production,allowing costeffective,single-use,in vivo sensors among other potential uses.

AIM: To prospectively compare volumetric intensitymodulated arc therapy(VMAT) and conventional intensity-modulated radiation therapy(IMRT) in coverage of planning target volumes and avoidance of multiple organs at risk(OARs) in patients undergoing definitive chemoradiotherapy for advanced(stage Ⅲ or Ⅳ)squamous cell cancer of the head and neck. METHODS: Computed tomography scans of 20 patients with advanced tumors of the larynx, naso-, oroand hypopharynx were prospectively planned using IMRT(7 field) and VMAT using two arcs. Calculated doses to planning target volume(PTV) and OAR were compared between IMRT and VMAT plans. Dose-volume histograms(DVH) were utilized to obtain calculated doses to PTV and OAR, including parotids, cochlea,spinal cord, brainstem, anterior tongue, pituitary and brachial plexus. DVH's for all structures were compared between IMRT and VMAT plans. In addition the planswere compared for dose conformity and homogeneity. The final treatment plan was chosen by the treating radiation oncologist. RESULTS: VMAT was chosen as the ultimate plan in 18 of 20 patients(90%) because the plans were thought to be otherwise clinically equivalent. The IMRT plan was chosen in 2 of 20 patients because the VMAT plan produced concentric irradiation of the cord which was not overcome even with an avoidance structure. For all patients, VMAT plans had a lower number of average monitor units on average(MU = 542.85) than IMRT plans(MU = 1612.58)(P < 0.001). Using the conformity index(CI), defined as the 95% isodose volume divided by the PTV, the IMRT plan was more conformal with a lower conformity index(CI = 1.61) than the VMAT plan(CI = 2.00)(P = 0.003). Dose homogeneity, as measured by average standard deviation of dose distribution over the PTV, was not different with VMAT(1.45 Gy) or IMRT(1.73 Gy)(P = 0.069). In this paper, the mechanical behavior and buckling failure of SUS304 stainless steel tubes with different local sharp-notched depths subjected to cyclic bending were experimentally investigated. It can be seen that the experimental moment-curvature relationship exhibits cyclic hardening and becomes a steady loop after a few cycles. However, the experimental ovalization-curvature relationship exhibits an increasing and ratcheting manner with the number of the bending cycles. In addition, higher notch depth of a tube leads to a more severe unsymmetrical trend of the ovalization-curvature relationship. It has been observed that the notch depth has almost no influence on the moment-curvature relationship. But, it has a strong influence on the ovalization-curvature relationship. Finally, the theoretical model proposed by Kyriakides and Shaw [1] was used in this study for simulating the controlled curvature-number of cycles to produce buckling relationship. Background Mangrove tannins can participate in wetland biogeochemical cycling. However, their fate and dynamics during leaf litter leaching have yet to be elucidated in coastal aquatic *** By using a simulated microcosm experiment, changes in leaf litter mass and tannin compounds, including total phenolics(TP), extractable condensed tannins(ECT), and bound condensed tannins(BCT), were examined in the litters and leachates of four common mangrove species: Kandelia obovata(Ko), Aegiceras corniculatum(Ac),Sonneratia apetala(Sa), and Avicennia marina(Am).Results Leaching caused a notable decline in litter mass, TP, and ECT in the leaf litter of Ko, Ac, Sa, and Am,while BCT increased significantly in Ko and Ac. Loss in foliar TP was higher than in leaf litter mass, and loss in foliar ECT was higher than in TP of Ko and Ac, but Sa showed the opposite result. The temporal changes of TP and ECT concentrations in leachates followed a similar trend, with an initial increase followed by a decrease. ECT dynamics in Ko and Ac leachates correlated with their TP concentrations, while in Sa leachate, the peak ECT occurred 72 h later than its TP peak. The leachate ECT concentrations were highest in Ac, followed by Ko, and significantly lower in *** peak TP and ECT proportions in leachates accounted for 9.2–23.9% and 7.7–9.4% of the total decreases in foliar TP and ECT, *** During the leaching process, tannins' fate was species-specific, while the dynamics were almost similar.

Role and outcome of conventional surgery in the treatment of pyogenic liver abscess in the modern era of minimally invasive therapy

AIM:To evaluate the role and outcome of conventional surgery in the treatment of pyogenic liver abscess in the modern era of minimally invasive therapy. METHODS:The medical records of thirteen patients with pyogenic liver abscess who underwent surgical treatment between January 1995 and December 2002 were retrospectively reviewed to determine the clinical presentation, indication and nature of surgery, and out-come of surgery. RESULTS:The patients were predominantly women (10/13) with a mean age of 65 ± 17 years. Their main presenting symptoms were abdominal pain (100%) and fever (77%). The aetiologies included biliary (n = 6), cryptogenic (n = 3), portal (n = 2), and trauma (n = 2). Seven patients underwent percutaneous drainage as the initial treatment. Of these, three patients developed peritonitis secondary to peritoneal spillage. Another four patients failed to respond because of multilocula-tion. Salvage surgery was required in these patients. Six patients proceeded to straight laparotomy:two had marked sepsis and multiloculated abscess that precluded percutaneous drainage, and four presented with perito-nitis of uncertain pathology. Surgical procedures included deroofment and drainage (n = 9), liver resection (n = 3), peritoneal lavage (n = 2), cholecystectomy (n = 4), and exploration of common bile duct (n = 2). One patient required reoperation because of bleeding. Three patients required further percutaneous drainage after surgery. The overall mortality was 46%. Four patients died of multiorgan failure and two patients died of pulmonary embolism. CONCLUSION:Surgical treatment of pyogenic liver ab-scess is occasionally needed when percutaneous drainage has failed due to various reasons. Mortality rate in this group of patients has remained high.

A double balanced Gilbert-cell class-A amplifier bleeding mixer (DBGC CAAB mixer) is proposed and implemented. The injection current is utilized to amplify the local oscillator (LO) signal to improve the performance of the transconductor stage. The DBGC CAAB mixer achieves a conversion gain of 17.5 dB at -14 dBm LO power, and the noise figure is suppressed from 45 dB to 10.7 dB. It is important to stress that the new configuration will not drain additional power in contrast to the former current bleeding mixers. This topology dramatically relieves the requirement of the LO power. The DBGC CAAB mixer is implemented by using 0.18-μm RFCMOS technology and operates at the 2.4 GHz ISM application with 10 MHz intermediate frequency. The power consumption is 12 mA at 1.5 V supply voltage. The DBGC CAAB mixer features the highest FOM figure within a wide range of LO power.

BACKGROUND: Cancer relapse, associated with increased drug resistance and rate of metastasis, often follows completion of chemotherapy but the cancer escape mechanisms are still incompletely understood. Percutaneous ethanol injection(PEI)has been used for treating hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)for decades, while the recurrence after PEI treatment remains a major limitation. Recent evidence mounted that cancer cells could survive from chemical induced apoptosis, suggesting a potential route through which cancer relapse may occur. This study focuses on the consequence of HepG2 recovery from ethanol-induced apoptotic ***: The model of HepG2 recovery from ethanolinduced apoptotic event was established by live cell imaging,BrdU assay and Western blotting. MTT assay, wound healing assay and invasion assay were used to investigate the behavior of HepG2 after ***: HepG2 cells could recover from ethanol-induced apoptosis. These cells changed their behaviors such as drug resistance, mobility and invasiveness. On average, the recovered HepG2 cell clones were found to be 46% more resistant to ethanol and 84% higher in mobility. The recovered clones became 58.2% more sensitive to ***: HepG2 cells can recover from ethanolinduced apoptotic event. These cells became more resistant to ethanol and more invasive. Although the recovered cell clones were more resistant to ethanol, they became more sensitive to5-fluorouracil treatment.

Objective：This study was to investigate the variables in bone marrow harvesting procedure and individual donor factors which can potentially affect the yield of mesenchymal stromal cells（MSC）.Methods：We determined the yield of MSC from bone marrow under different clinical conditions by comparing the MSC colony numbers from：（1） donors of different ages;（2） healthy donors and patients with leukemia;（3） bone marrow aspirated at different time points during marrow harvesting;（4） bone marrow harvested by different ***：During the process of harvesting,the number of MSC significantly decreased with increase number of aspiration,from 675/ml at the initial decreased to 60/ml after 100 ml bone marrow aspirated,and 50/ml after 200 ml bone marrow *** number of MSC retrieved from leukemia patients（99/ml bone marrow） was significantly lower than that of healthy donors（708/ml bone marrow）.However,there was no significant difference in growth *** was no significant age-related difference of MSC yielded from donors 55 *** there was no significant difference in MSC number between the samples from single end-holed needle and those from multiple-side-hole ***：The optimal bone marrow samples for MSC collection should be obtained earlier in the process of harvesting *** marrow from donors 55 years was equally good as MSC *** autologous MSC from leukemia patients can be utilized for in-vitro MSC expansion.
