Biogas Perspectives in Livestock Sector in Brazil and the United States： Electric, Thermal and Vehicular Energy Use

The demand for energy, water and food will continuously increase, as the prediction states that 2.5 billion people will be added to the world population by 2050, representing not only an increase in the consumption but also more waste production, greenhouse gas （GHG） emissions and depletion of natural resources. Taking into account that renewable sources of energy can help to overcome these challenges and diversify the energy matrix in the countries, this paper aims at analyzing the biogas potential in Brazil and the United States, especially in the livestock sector, and its benefits in the environmental, social and economic aspects. Both countries are among the top five countries globally in terms of water availability, energy consumption and food production. Until 2050, the world consumption of meat will have a significant increase： 206% of poultry meat, 56% of pork meat and 47% of beef meat, augmenting the need for sustainable management of waste and manure. This scenario can become a sustainable opportunity for biogas implementation, which provides multiple economic, environmental and social benefits for farmers, businesses and communities, including production of electrical, thermal and vehicular energy, production of high-quality biofertilizer, reduction of ground and surface water pollution and reduction of GHG emissions, and foments new income for the farmers, among others. A new concept is presented in this article to make biogas systems feasible, i.e., biogas condominiums, as small and medium-scale farms by themselves usually would not be able to afford the investments. This arrangement can bring benefits for the whole biogas supply chain that includes farmers, agroindustry, providers and local community.

Rapid economic growth, increasing populations and emergent prosperity are driving up demand tor energy, water anu food, especially in developing countries. In this scenario, the analysis of these three elements has gained the increasing attention globally in research, business and policy spheres. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the perspectives of this nexus for Brazil and the United States, using current and predicted scenario for 2050. Considering the importance of renewable sources of energy to overcome these challenges and diversify the energy matrix in both countries, the paper will also present the biogas potential for both countries, which provides multiple economic, environmental and social benefits, such as electrical, thermal and vehicular energy, high-quality biofertilizer, reduction of odor and pathogenic vectors in the farms, decrease of ground and surface water pollution, promotion of new income for the farmers, reduction of the greenhouse gases emissions, among others.

Latin American and the Caribbean countries have one of the world＇s largest sources of renewable energy. Nonetheless, it estimated that nearly three-quarters of their energy consumption relies on the use of fossil fuels, with most of the countries being net importers, ultimately imposing a marked economic and political dependence on those energy commodities. Therefore, the opportunity lies in a higher utilization of various renewable energy resources, which contribute to the country＇s energy security while promoting significant environmental benefits. This manuscript aimed to provide a comparative analysis of current energy scenarios of six Latin American countries （Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Brazil, Chile and Ecuador） to evaluate their policies, programs and strategies implemented in the search for greater participation of renewable energy, with a special attention to biogas. Given the importance of the water-energy-food nexus that could foment the use of renewable energies under conditions of water scarcity, a qualitative data comparison was accomplished, considering biogas production potential, biogas projects and CO2 emissions.

Significance of using isolated footing technique for resi- dential construction on expansive soils

Expansive soils cause problems with the founding of lightly loaded structures in many parts of the world. Foundation design for expansive soils is one of the most discussed and problematic issues in Australia as expansive soils were responsible for billions of dollars＇ worth of damage to man-made structures such as buildings and roads. Several studies and reports indicate that one of the most common and least recognized problems causing severe structural damage to houses lies in expansive soils. In this study, a critical review has been carried out on the current Australian standards for building on expansive soils and they are compared with some techniques that are not included in the current Australian standards for residential slabs and footings. Based on the results of this review, the most effective and economical method has been proposed for construction of footings on all site classifications without restriction to 75mm of characteristic movement. In addition, it has become apparent that as design procedures for footings resting on sites with extreme characteristic movements are not included in the current Australian standards, there is a strong need for well-developed and simplified standard design procedures for characteristic soil movement of greater than 75mm to be included into the Australian Standards.

Hot corrosion has been extensively observed in various high temperature applications,which might cause large economic *** deepen the insight and understanding of hot corrosion,herein,we provide a detailed discussion on hot corrosion induced by molten sulfate salt,in which Na_(2)SO_(4)is the main chemical *** hot corrosion is triggered and sustained by the negative solubility gradient of protective oxide from the oxide/salt interface to salt/gas *** this work,we reviewed several key factors,including temperature,gas composition,molten salt composition,alloy element and external stress,influencing the hot corrosion of alloy beneath the molten *** application of anti-corrosion coating seems to be the most effective and commercial mothed to mitigate hot ***,the progress of the development of effective coatings,e.g.,Ni-Cr coatings,aluminide coatings,silicide coatings and MCrAlY(X)coatings,has also been summarized.

Synchronization of home departure and arrival times in dual earner households with children:Panel regression model of time gaps

Organizing schedules and allocating time to different activities is always a challenge in dual-earner households,especially when they have *** may need to link their schedule to those of their children to allow them escorting their children to school or to take care or be with their children at *** paper reports the results of an analysis of the degree of synchronization of home departure and arrival times in dual earner households with children,where the degree of synchronization is defined as the gap between departure and arrival times of a parent and *** activity-travel diary data of different household members,a random parameters regression model is estimated to examine differences in time gaps in home departure and arrival times between parents and children as a function of gender,day of the week,age of the youngest child,and other socio-demographic *** results of the analysis provide insight into factors influencing the degree of synchronization and coordination of double activity-travel scheduling decisions in households with *** indicate that gender,number of children in the household,age of the youngest child,travel within or outside peak hours,day of the week,transport mode used for the work commute and household income level significantly affect time gaps,especially arrival time gaps.

Clinical,serological and genetic predictors of inflammatory bowel disease course

Patients with extensive or complicated Crohn's disease(CD) at diagnosis should be treated straightaway with immunosuppressive therapy according to the most recent *** patients with localized and uncomplicated CD at diagnosis,early use of immunosuppressive therapy is debated for preventing disease progression and limiting the disabling clinical *** this context,there is a need for predictors of benign or unfavourable subsequent clinical course,in order to avoid over-treating with risky drugs those patients who would have experienced spontaneous mid-term asymptomatic disease without progression towards irreversible intestinal *** diagnosis,an age below 40 years,the presence of perianal lesions and the need for treating the first flare with steroids have been consistently associated with an unfavourable subsequent 5-year or 10-year clinical *** positive predictive value of unfavourable course in patients with 2 or 3 predictors ranges between 0.75 and 0.95 in population-based and referral centre ***,the use of these predictors can be integrated into the elements that influence individual *** the CD postoperative context,keeping smoking and history of prior resection are the stron-gest predictors of disease symptomatic ***,these clinical predictors alone are not as reliable as severity of early postoperative endoscopic recurrence in clinical *** ulcerative colitis(UC),extensive colitis at diagnosis is associated with unfavourable clinical course in the first 5 to 10 years of the disease,and also with long-term colectomy and colorectal inflammation-associated colorectal *** patients with extensive UC at diagnosis,a rapid step-up strategy aiming to achieve sustained deep remission should therefore be *** the moment,no reliable serological or genetic predictor of inflammatory bowel disease clinical course has been identified.

Synthesis of Nanostructured Copper-doped Titania and Its Properties

Nanostructured pure-Ti O_2 and Cu3%-Ti O_2 were successfully synthesized via co-precipitation method. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) result proves that the synthesized sample were predominantly in anatase phase with size in the range of 8～16 nm, which are in good agreement with the transmission electron microscopy data. Owing to doping of copper, not only did the thermal stability of the Ti O_2 decrease, but also a significant decrease in its particle size and a shift of the adsorption edge to a higher wavelength region appear. The activity of both pure-Ti O_2 and Cu3%-doped Ti O_2 was tested to study their ability to decolorize congo red(CR) dye in aqueous solution. We observed that the CR dye was decolorized faster by Cu3%-Ti O_2 than pure-Ti O_2. Results of this study demonstrate a potential application of the synthesized sample for decolorizing dye pollutants from aqueous waste.
