Environmental variation shifts the relationship between trees and scatterhoarders along the continuum from mutualism to antagonism

The conditional mutualism between scatterhoarders and trees varies on a continuum from mutualism to antagonism and can change across time and space,and among *** examined 4 tree species(red oak[Quercus rubra],white oak[Quercus alba],American chestnut[Castanea dentata]and hybrid chestnut[***×Castanea] mollissima)across 5 sites and 3 years to quantify the variability in this conditional *** used a published model to compare the rates of seed emergence with and without burial to the probability that seeds will be cached and left uneaten by scatterhoarders to quantify variation in the conditional mutualism that can be explained by environmental variation among sites,years,species,and seed provenance within *** species tested had increased emergence when ***,comparing benefits of burial to the probability of caching by scatterhoarders indicated a mutualism in red oak,while white oak was nearly always *** was variable around the boundary between mutualism and antagonism,indicating a high degree of context dependence in the relationship with *** found that different seed provenances did not vary in their potential for *** did not explain microsite differences in seed emergence in any of the species *** hybrid chestnut only,emergence on the surface declined with soil moisture in the *** quantifying the variation in the conditional mutualism that was not caused by changes in scatterhoarder behavior,we show that environmental conditions and seed traits are an important and underappreciated component of the variation in the relationship between trees and scatterhoarders.

Carbonic anhydrases （CAs） are zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the interconversion of CO2 and HCO3- and are ubiquitous in nature. Higher plants contain three evolutionarily distinct CA families, αCAs, 13CAs, and γCAs, where each family is represented by multiple isoforms in all species. Alternative splicing of CA transcripts appears common; consequently, the number of functional CA isoforms in a species may exceed the number of genes. CAs are expressed in numerous plant tissues and in different cellular locations. The most prevalent CAs are those in the chloroplast, cytosol, and mitochondria. This diversity in location is paralleled in the many physiological and biochemical roles that CAs play in plants. In this review, the number and types of CAs in C3, C4, and crassulacean acid metabolism （CAM） plants are considered, and the roles of the α and yCAs are briefly discussed. The remainder of the review focuses on plant βCAs and includes the identification of homologs between species using phylogenetic approaches, a consideration of the inter- and intracellular localization of the proteins, along with the evidence for alternative splice forms. Current understanding of βCA tissue-specific expression patterns and what controls them are reviewed, and the physiological roles for which βCAs have been implicated are presented.

“Yin-Yang philosophy” for the design of anticancer drug delivery nanoparticles

Understanding the in vivo transport process provides guidelines for designing ideal nanoparticles (NPs) with higher efficacy and fewer off-target effects. Many factors, such as particle size, morphology, surface potential, structural stability, and etc., may influence the delivering process of NPs due to the existence of various physiological barriers within the body. Herein, we summarise the distinct influences of NP physicochemical properties on the four consecutive in vivo transport steps: (1) navigating with bloodstream within blood vessels, (2) transport across vasculature walls into tumour tissues, (3) intratumoural transport through the interstitial space, and (4) cellular uptake & intracellular delivery by cancerous cells. We found that the philosophy behind the current consensus for NP design has certain similarities to the “Yin-Yang” theory in traditional Chinese culture. Almost all physicochemical properties, regardless of big or small sizes, long or short length, positive or negative zeta potentials, are double-edged swords. The balance of potential benefits and side effects, drug selectivity and accessibility should be fully considered when optimising particle design, similar to the “Yin-Yang harmony”. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the advancements in NPs research, focusing on their distinct features in tumour targeting, drug delivery, and cell uptake. Additionally, it deliberates on future developmental trends and potential obstacles, thereby aiming to uncover the ways these characteristics influence the NPs’ biological activity and provide theoretical guidance for the targeted delivery of NPs. © 2024, Chinese Medical Multimedia Press Co Ltd. Real Quanta and Continuous Reduction

Previous theories of quasicrystal diffraction have called it “Bragg diffraction in Fibonacci sequence and 6 dimensions”. This is a misnomer, because quasicrystal diffraction is not in integral linear order n where nλ= 2dsin(θ) as in all crystal diffraction;but in irrational, geometric series τm, that are now properly indexed, simulated and verified in 3 dimensions. The diffraction is due not to mathematical axiom, but to the physical property of dual harmony of the probe, scattering on the hierarchic structure in the scattering solid. By applying this property to the postulates of quantum theory, it emerges that the 3rd postulate (continuous and definite) contradicts the 4th (instantaneous and indefinite). The latter also contradicts Heisenberg’s “limit”. In fact, the implied postulates of probability amplitude describe hidden variables that are universally recognized, in all sensitive measurement, by records of error bars. The hidden variables include momentum quanta, in quasicrystal diffraction, that are continuous and definite. A revision of the 4th postulate is proposed.

Relativistic Approximations for Quantization and harmony in the Schrödinger Equation, and Why Mechanics Is Quantized

The initial purpose is to add two physical origins for the outstandingly clear mathematical description that Dirac has left in his Principles of Quantum Mechanics. The first is the “internal motion” in the wave function of the electron that is now expressed through dispersion dynamics;the second is the physical origin for mathematical quantization. Bohr’s model for the hydrogen atom was “the greatest single step in the development of the theory of atomic structure.” It leads to the Schrodinger equation which is non-relativistic, but which conveniently equates together momentum and electrostatic potential in a representation containing mixed powers. Firstly, we show how the equation is expansible to approximate relativistic form by applying solutions for the dilation of time in special relativity, and for the contraction of space. The adaptation is to invariant “harmonic events” that are digitally quantized. Secondly, the internal motion of the electron is described by a stable wave packet that implies wave-particle duality. The duality includes uncertainty that is precisely described with some variance from Heisenberg’s axiomatic limit. Harmonic orbital wave functions are self-constructive. This is the physical origin of quantization.

Einstein claimed Bohr’s theory is incomplete: “the wave function does not provide a complete description of the physical reality” [1]. Their views represent two physics in schism [2] [3]. Quanta are fundamental. The theory of diffraction in quasicrystals, that is summarized here, is falsifiable and verified. The quanta are not only harmonic;but harmonic in dual series: geometric and linear. Many have believed the quantum is real;rather than conceptual and axiomatic. The quasicrystal proves its reality.

An assessment of African lion Panthera leo sociality via social network analysis： prerelease monitoring for an ex situ reintroduction program

The wild population of the African lion Panthera leo continues to decline, requiring alternate conservation programs to be considered. One such program is ex situ reintroduction. Prior to release, longterm monitoring and assessment of behavior is required to determine whether prides and coalitions behave naturally and are sufficiently adapted to a wild environment. Social network analysis （SNA） can be used to provide insight into how the pride as a whole and individuals within it, function. Our study was conducted upon 2 captive-origin prides who are part of an ex situ reintroduction program, and 1 wild pride of African lion. Social interactions were collected at all occurrence for each pride and categorized into greet, social grooming, play, and aggression. Betweenness centrality showed that offspring in each pride were central to the play network, whereas degree indicated that adults received （indegree） the greatest number of overall social interactions, and the adult males of each pride were least likely to initiate （outdegree） any interactions. Through the assessment of individual centrality and degree values, a social keystone adult female was identified for each pride. Social network results indicated that the 2 captive-origin prides had formed cohesive social units and possessed relationships and behaviors comparable with the wild pride for the studied behaviors. This study provided the first SNA comparison between captive-bred origin and a wild pride of lions, providing valuable information on individual and pride sociality, critical for determining the success of prides within an ex situ reintroduction program.
