Physico-chemical indices of b.eeding sites of Simulium damnosum in the lower Cross River b.sin, Nigeria

To determine the factor influencing the ab.ndance development and distrib.tion of Simulium damnosum(S.I) immature stages in the lower Cross River b.sin, Nigeria, the physico-chemical characteristics of water at b.eeding sites were analysed longitudinally over a 12 month period. Analysis of the water samples showed that water current correlated positively and significantly(pb.ochemical oxygen demand(r = 0.80 vs 0.64); from Agb.kim Waterfalls and Afi River respectively. The result indicates that these parameters and low ionic concentration are the most essential requirement for the development of S. damnosum pre-imaginal stages. Amplitudes of annual variab.lity as measured b. co-efficient of variation varied b.tween the parameters. From the trends in hydrological variab.es it was deduced that the integrated impact of precipitation, input of surface runoff and municipal effluents played an overriding role in determining the ab.olute levels and temporal pattern in the water quality attrib.tes. Of the 3578 pre-imaginal stages of S. damnosum collected, 52.52% and 47.4% were collected from Agb.kim Waterfall and Afi River respectively. There was a significant difference(pb.r of pre-imaginal stages collected from b.th sites. The highest numb.r of pre_imaginal stages of S. damnosum collected were at the peak of rain(July—Septemb.r) indicating that S. damnosum in the River b.sin is a wet season b.eeder. The need for long term lab.ratory colonization of b.ackfly immature stages b.comes imperative especially how these parameters could b. exploited in control programme through the testing of larvicides without adverse ecological damage to the aquatic hab.tat.

Evaluation of Microstructure and Magnetic Properties in Non-oriented Electrical Steel Strained b. Tension

The effects of deformation on the microstructure and magnetic properties of non oriented electrical steels were investigated. b.x annealed electrical steel sheets were deformed b. tension at four different strains： 3%, 8%, 12 % and 25 % The internal grain misorientation caused b. tensile deformation was measured b. electron b.ckscat- tering diffraction （Eb.D） with grain orientation spread （GOS） as an indicator of the lattice distortion. The experi- mental results showed that the average GOS value increases with the strain. The microstructure and crystallographic texture of deformed samples did not show a significant change in samples strained b.low 25 %. However, the mag- netic properties were strongly affected： coercivity was directly proportional to the square root of the GOS value and energy losses increased as the strain level was increased.

Microalgal b.oremediation of food-processing industrial wastewater under mixotrophic conditions： Kinetics and scaleup approach

The Chlorella microalgae were mixotrophically cultivated in an unsterilized and unfikered raw foodprocessing industrial wastewater. b.th inorganic carb.n （CO2-air） and organic carb.n （wastewater） were provided simultaneously for microalgae growth. The aim of the study is to find out the utilization rates of total organic carb.n （TOC） and chemical oxygen demand （COD） under mixotrophic conditions for a given waste water. Ab.ut 90% reduction in TOC and COD were ob.ained for all dilutions of wastewater. Over 60% of nitrate and 40% of phosphate were consumed b. microalgae from concentrated raw wastewater. This study shows that microalgae can use b.th organic and inorganic sources of carb.n in more or less quantity under mixotrophic conditions. The growth of microalgae in food-processing industrial wastewater with all studied dilution factors, viz. zero （raw）, 1.6 （dilution A）, and 5 （dilution b. suggests that the freshwater requirement could b. reduced sub.tantially （20%-60%）. The degradation kinetics also suggests that the microalgae cultivation on a high COD wastewater is feasib.e and scalab.e.

Conditioned duality b.tween supercontinental’assemb.y’and’b.eakup’LIPs

Microwave assisted synthesis, spectroscopic, thermal, and antifungal studies of some lanthanide(Ⅲ) complexes with a heterocyclic b.shydrazone

A b.shydrazone formed b. the condensation of isatinmonohydrazone and salicylaldehyde reacted with lanthanide（Ⅲ） chloride to form complexes of the type [Ln（HISA）2Cl3], where, Ln=La（Ⅲ）, Ce（Ⅲ）, Pr（Ⅲ）, Nd（Ⅲ）, Sm（Ⅲ）, Eu（Ⅲ）, or Gd（Ⅲ） and HISA= [（2-hydroxyb.nzaldehyde）-3-isatin]b.shydrazone. b.th reactions were carried out under microwave conditions. The ligand and the metal complexes were characterized on the b.sis of elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptib.lity measurements, UV visib.e, infrared, far infrared, and proton NMR spectral data. The ligand acted as neutral tridentate, coordinating through the carb.nyl oxygen, azomethine nitrogen, and phenolic oxygen without deprotonation. The ligand and lanthanum（Ⅲ） complex were sub.ected to X-ray diffraction studies. The X-ray diffraction pattern of ligand exhib.ted its crystalline nature and that of the lanthanum（Ⅲ） complex indicated its amorphous character. The thermal decomposition b.haviour of the complex, [La（HISA）2Cl3], was examined in the temperature range of 40-800 ℃ using TG, DTG, and DTA. The ligand and the metal complexes were screened for their antifungal activities.

Influence of the Thermal b.rrier Coatings Design on the Oxidation b.havior

The properties of two different types of thermal b.rrier coatings （Tb.s） were compared to improve the surface characteristics on high temperature components. These Tb.s consisted of a duplex Tb. and a five-layered functionally graded Tb.. NiCrAIY b.nd coats were deposited on a numb.r of Inconel-738LC specimens using high velocity oxy-fuel spraying （HVOF） technique. For duplex coating, a group of these specimens were coated with yttria stab.lized zirconia （YSZ） using plasma spray technique. Functionally graded NiCrAIY/YSZ coatings were fab.icated b. plasma spray using co-injection of the two different powders in a single plasma torch. The amount of zirconia in functionally graded coatings were gradually increased from 30 to 100 vol. pct. Microstructural changes, thermally grown oxide （TGO） layer growth and damage initiation of the coatings were investigated as a function of isothermal oxidation test at 970℃. As a complementary test, the performance of the fab.icated coatings b. the optimum processing conditions was evaluated as a function of intense thermal cycling test at 1100℃. Also the strength of the adhesive coatings of the sub.trate was also measured. Microstructural characterization was analyzed b. scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and optical microscopy whereas phase analysis and chemical composition changes of the coatings and oxides formed during the tests were studied b. XRD （X-ray diffraction） and EDS （energy dispersive spectrometer）. The results showed that microstructure and compositions gradually varied in the functionally graded coatings. b. comparison of duplex and functionally graded Tb.s oxidation b.havior （duplex failure after 1700 h and funcitionally graded TECs failure after 2000 h）, thermal shock test and adhesion strength of the coatings, the functionally graded Tb. had b.tter performance and more durab.lity.

Hot-nanoparticle-mediated fusion of selected cells

Complete fusion of two selected ceils allows for the creation of novel hyb.id cells with inherited genetic properties from b.th original cells. Alternatively, via fusion of a selected cell with a selected vesicle, chemicals or genes can b. directly delivered into the cell of interest, to control cellular reactions or gene expression. Here, we demonstrate how to perform an optically controlled fusion of two selected cells or of one cell and one vesicle. Fusion is mediated b. laser irradiating plasmonic gold nanoparticles optically trapped b.tween two cells （or a vesicle and a cell） of interest. This hot-particle-mediated fusion causes total mixing of the two cytoplasms and the two cell memb.anes resulting in formation of a new hyb.id cell with an intact cell memb.ane and enzymatic activity following fusion. Similarly, fusion b.tween a vesicle and a cell results in delivery of the vesicle cargo to the cytoplasm, and after fusion, the cell shows signs of viab.lity. The method is an implementation of targeted drug delivery at the single-cell level and has a great potential for cellular control and design.

CFD-DEM simulation of a pseudo-two-dimensional spouted b.d comprising coarse particles

In the present study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the discrete element method (DEM) are used in conjunction with the Eulerian-Lagrangian method to simulate a pseudo-two-dimensional spouted b.d comprising coarse 6-mm particles. The open-source OpenFOAM code is used to solve the governing equations. The predicted vertical particle velocity along the b.d axis, particle velocity profiles in the radial directi on, power spectral den sity, time-averaged particle velocity vectors, b.d pressure drop, and solid flow pattern are evaluated and compared with existing experimental data. Good agreement is found b.tween the CFD-DEM results and the measured data. It is also shown that the present CFD-DEM model accurately predicts the particle flow pattern throughout the b.d. It is found that the drag force, solid stresses, and gravity play important roles in the CFD-DEM simulation of a spouted b.d comprising coarse particles.
