In this study,carbon black(CB)powder-loaded polyurethane(PU)composites(CB-PU composites)were prepared by melt mixing method with different volume percentages(45,50,55,58 and 61 vol.%)of CB in the PU *** prepared CB-PU composites had been further studied for surface morphology using the field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)*** properties in terms of real permittivity(ε′)and imaginary permittivity(ε′′)of the fabricated composites were computed using an Agilent E8364B vector network analyzer in the frequency range of 8-12 GHz(X-band).Dielectric loss factor of the prepared CB-PU composites was computed in terms of the dielectric loss tangent(tanδ_(e)=ε′′/ε′).Microwave absorbing properties were appraised in terms of the reflection loss(RL)which in turn was calculated for varying thicknesses of the prepared composites from the measured real and imaginary permittivity *** minimum RL was observed as−20.10 dB for the absorber with a thickness of 2.2 mm and the bandwidth achieved was 1.92 GHz for RL≤−10 *** on the above results these CB-PU composites have potential use as effective microwave absorbers in 8-12-GHz(X-band)frequency range.

Abdominal tuberculosis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children in developing countries. Primary involvement of appendix is very rare. Presentation is usually non specific and diagnosis is made in most cases on histopathlogical examination following appendicectomy. This to our knowledge is the first case of appendicular tuberculosis presenting primarily as spontaneous enterocutaneous fistula over front of right thigh. Barium meal follow-through was diagnostic. Appendicectomy was performed followed by anti-tubercular treatment which was curative.

A complex structure of barium iron niobate, Ba(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 (BFN) and strontium titanate SrTiO3 (ST) was fabricated by a solid-state reaction method. The phase formation of Ba(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3-SrTiO3 was checked using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The X-ray structural analysis of BFN and BFN-ST ceramics, showed the formation of single-phase compound in the monoclinic system, which is a distorted structure of an ideal cubic perovskite. Careful examination of microstructures of the individual compounds of the system was done by the scanning electron micrograph (SEM), and confirms the polycrystalline nature of the systems. Detailed studies of dielectric and electrical impedance properties of the systems in a wide range of frequency (100Hz - 5MHz) and different temperatures (30°C-285°C) showed that these properties are strongly dependent on temperature and frequency.

Gangrenous Amyand’s hernia in neonate: A great clinical masquerader

Amyand’s hernia [AH] is a rare condition with presence of vermiform appendix in an inguinal hernia sac [1]. It is a rare entity with very difficult preoperative diagnosis that does not affect management. We herein report a neonatal gangrenous AH masking all features of underlying bowel gangrene. In neonates, a great masquerader can mask all the features of underlying bowel gangrene and delay in diagnosis can be detrimental in context of outcome. A high index of suspicion of Amyand’s hernia with gangrene should be kept even if child presents with irreducible hernia without features of strangulation to prevent avoidable increase in morbidity and mortality.

The soil pH of tea garden was acidic (4.6 - 5.3) with organic contents ranging between 0.91% - 1.09%. Available po- tassium concentration was predominantly found in the range of 167 - 208 mg/kg followed by the nitrogen (150 - 189 mg/ha) and phosphorus (42 - 169 mg/kg). The Fe content was the one of the predominant heavy metal in soil (5494 - 5627 mg/kg) followed by Mn (245 - 435 mg/kg), Zn (30 - 111 mg/kg) and Cu (22 - 51 mg/kg). The concentration of toxic heavy metals Pb, Ni, and Cd in tea leaves, made tea and its infusions were too low. The level of most abundant essential heavy metals in tea infusion was Zn ranging from 0.09 - 0.52 mg/kg followed by Mn 0.10 - 0.42 mg/kg. The level of Fe and Cu was ranging from 0.068 - 0.073 mg/kg and 0.007 - 0.04 mg/kg in tea infusion respectively. The levels of all es- sential and the toxic metals were thus obtained were compared well with the other parts of the world.

Citrate-nitrate autocombustion process is a promising synthesis route in the field of nanomaterials. This route involves many controlling parameters which ultimately affect properties of the products. In the present research work, the effect of concentration of fuel to that of metal nitrates has been studied in a systematic manner. The nature of exothermic reaction was analyzed with DSC-TGA and the powder properties were characterized by XRD, TEM and BET measurement. The properties of the powders have been explained with respect to fuel content, vigorousness of the exothermic reaction, combustion temperature and duration. The most vigorous reaction was found to occur for the composition with FER of 0.50 with the production of the smallest crystallite size of 9 nm.

The annual average values of amplitudes and phases of first two harmonics of cosmic ray anisotropy have been derived by using the harmonic analysis technique for the period 1989 to 2004, which covers mostly the major period of solar cycles 22 and 23. In this paper we have taken the pressure corrected hourly data for Kiel neutron monitor station (cut off rigidity ≈ 2.29 GV) to derive the harmonic component of cosmic ray daily variation and compared with the data of Halekala neutron monitor (cut off rigidity ≈ 13.2 GV) for the period 1991 to 2004. From the analysis it has been concluded that the diurnal amplitude and phase of daily variation of cosmic rays have been found to be correlated with solar activity. However, the semi-diurnal amplitude and phase are inversely correlated with solar activity for both the stations.

Growth and yield responses of broccoli cultivars to different rates of nitrogen in western Chitwan, Nepal

A field experiment was conducted with the objective to determine the optimum rate of nitrogen (N) fertilizer for effective growth and yield of two varieties of broccoli in southern plain of Nepal. The experiment was laid out with two-factorial completely random block design (RCBD) comprising two varieties of broccoli (Calabrese and Green Sprouting) and five N rates (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha-1) with three replication in each treatment combinations. The effects of variety and N rate on total curd yield were significant but the interaction effect was non-significant. Green Sprouting produced 11% higher total curd than Calabrese. Similarly, curd production increased N rate up to 200 kg ha-1 reaching a maximum of 14.47 t ha-1. This indicated that optimum level of N could be beyond the rates tested in this study, which needs further experimentation.

Atypical Olfactory Neuroblastoma Presenting as Sinonasal Polyposis with Nasopharyngeal Extension: A Case Report

Background: Olfactory neuroblastoma also known as Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is a tumor arising from the basal layer of olfactory epithelium in the superior recess of the nasal cavity in the region of cribriform plate. Incidence peaks once in 11 - 20 years of age and again in 50 - 60 years of age. It is equally found in men and women. Aim: The main aim of this case report is to characterize the clinical features of ENB showing nasopharyngeal involvement and its importance in the differential diagnosis of sinonasal neuroendocrine malignancies. Case presentation: Two cases are reported. The first case was a 21-year-old male with symptoms of nasal obstruction, recurrent epistaxis, nasal discharge, headache and paresthesia over the face with an evolution of 1 year with no previous history of trauma. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy revealed reddish gray mass filling bilateral nasal cavities. Posterior rhinoscopy revealed mass coming through choanae and filling the nasopharynx. Endoscopic resection of tumor was done and postoperatively all the symptoms of the patient resolved. The second case was a 62-year-old male with complaints of nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, recurrent epistaxis, anosmia and difficulty in swallowing. On computed tomography, anteriorly, the mass was extending up to external nares and posteriorly up to the nasopharynx, superiorly up to nasal roof and inferiorly up to hard palate. No obvious erosion of floor of anterior cranial fossa was seen. No intracranial extension was seen. Surgery was advised but patient refused to undergo any treatment. Conclusion: This study highlights the characteristics and clinical features of ENB showing nasopharyngeal involvement and their importance in the differential diagnosis of sinonasal neuroendocrine malignancies.

Prediction of Smear Positive TB Cases at Different Types of Designated Microscopy Centres, Karnataka, India

Background: Under the Revised National Tuberculosis control Programme (RNTCP) in India, the designated microscopy centres (DMCs) form the basic unit of smear positive TB case detection in a district. There is a need by the programme managers to estimate the mean and range of smear positive tuberculosis (TB) cases that can be detected at DMCs located in different type of health facilities to channelize their resources. Methods: It is a cross-sectional study conducted in the state of Karnataka, India during January 2014 to December 2014 based on the compiled reports from past five years received from all the 30 districts of the state. The prediction was made based on the performance of these DMCs in the last five years using a modeling technique. Results: The proportions of the DMCs located at health facilities are Primary Health Institutions/Centres (PHIs)—73%, Tuberculosis Units (TUs)—15%, Medical colleges (MC)—7%, District TB centres (DTC)—3% and Private Practitioners (PP)—2%. The maximum number of cases that can be detected at DTC is 3621 (SD 54), TU is 9224 (SD 90), PHI is 20,412 (SD 135), PP is 859 (SD 26) and MC is 8322 (SD 84). Conclusion: The predicted values will essentially serve as a tool for the programme managers of Karnataka to plan, strategize and monitor the performance of DMCs in the state.
