Decline in Diversity and Production of Exploited Fishery Resources in Vembanad Wetland System: Strategies for Better Management and Conservation

This paper describes the fishery catch structure of Vembanad wetland system during August 2012 to July 2013. The estimates of fishery production indicated an annual landing of 4387.31 t, in which 480.98 t and 3906.33 t contributed by southern and northern zone of Vembanad respectively. Eighty species of finfishes, five species of penaeid shrimps, three species of palaemonid prawns and two species of crabs were identified from the study period. The catch per unit effort (CPUE) value was maximum for gill net (3.04 kg·h-1) followed by stake net (2.43 kg·h-1), Chinese dip net (2.01 kg·h-1), seines (1.2 kg·h-1), cast net (0.72 kg·h-1) and hook and line (0.34 kg·h-1). Biological integrity and fishery production of estuaries in the country are declining mainly due to various man induced activities. Thaneermukkom barrage, the salinity barrier, constructed across the Vembanad wetland system in 1976, transforming the water body into two distinct ecosystems, a fresh water zone on the south and a brackish water zone on the north, resulting in gross changes in physical, chemical and biological entity of the aquatic ecosystem. In the southern zone of Vembanad the marine fish species were less available with the closure of the barrage period. There are signs of decline of the Vembanad fishery resources, evident in the lesser number of species and decline of fishery production. This will lead to biodiversity loss, fish stock reduction and will ultimately affect the livelihood support of the traditional fishers to a large extent, besides affecting other ecological services. A better conservation measure must be implemented for maintaining the sustainable fishery resources in Vembanad.

Gall bladder carcinoma: Aggressive malignancy with protean loco-regional and distant spread

The most common malignancy of biliary tract is gallbladder cancer(GBC) which is the third most common cancer in gastrointestinal tract. It is a lethal disease for most patients in spite of growing awareness and improved diagnostic techniques. GBC has a verypoor prognosis and the 5 year survival rate is < 10%. Although etiology of the carcinoma of the gallbladder is still obscure, various factors have been implicated, cholelithiasis being the most frequent. The incidence of GBC worldwide is based on the gender, geography and ethnicity which suggest that both genetic and environmental factors can cause GBC. The major route of spread of gallbladder cancer(GC) is locoregional rather than distant. It spreads by lymphatic, vascular, neural, intraperitoneal, and intraductal routes. Sonography is usually the most common imaging test to evaluate symptoms of biliary tract disease including suspected GC. With recent advances in imaging modalities like multi-detector computed tomography(CT) scanners, magnetic resonance imaging-positron emission tomography/CT diagnosis of gallbladder cancer has improved. Studies have also targeted molecular and genetic pathways. Treatment options have included extended and radical surgeries and adjuvant chemotherapy. This review article deals in detail with important aspects of carcinoma gallbladder and its manifestations and challenges. Role of various imaging modalities in characterization and accurate staging has been discussed. The loco-regional spread of this aggressive malignancy is dealt explicitly.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Sonosalpingography for Assessing Tubal Pathology in Women with Secondary Infertility Taking Laparoscopy as Gold Standard

Context: Secondary infertility is a major public health issue with growing urbanisation and increasing age of marriage among women. Disease limited to low socioeconomic strata is commonly seen in general population. Judicious and accurate assessment of underlying pathology targeting tubes should be undertaken. Aims: The aim of this observational study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of sonosalpingography taking laparoscopy as gold standard in patients of secondary infertility. Main aim was to assess tubal factors as an underlying cause and to assess feasibility of a radiation free protocol in patients of reproductive age group. Settings and Design: The study was carried out in a hospital setting. A total of 123 patients were selected. Patients of primary infertility were excluded. Sonosalpingography was performed by a single experienced radiologist. This was confirmed by laparoscopy conducted by an experienced gynaecologist. Methods and Material: A detailed clinical and physical examination including internal examination was done. This was followed by sonosalpingography using high frequency TVS probe (Philips IU 22). All patients were subjected to laparoscopic evaluation on the same day. Statistical analysis: Sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic accuracy and predictive values. Results: Sonosalpingography was 72.91% sensitive, 81.33% specific with diagnostic accuracy of 78.05% and positive predictive value of 71.42% for tubal pathologies. Conclusions: Sonosalpingography is a very useful complementary diagnostic modality in assessment of tubal pathology. This should precede direct laparoscopic evaluation. Patients of secondary infertility can be assessed with a combination of sonosalpingography and laparoscopy. This saves the patient of radiation exposure as well as pain of contrast

The effects of disturbance on forest structure and diversity along an altitudinal gradient in the temperate,sub-tropical,and tropical regions of Garhwal Himalaya were *** region was further categorized into undisturbed(UD),mildly disturbed(MD),and highly disturbed(HD)sites on the basis of magnitude of disturbance in these *** UD sites of temperate,sub-tropical and tropical regions,Quercus leucotrichophora,Anogeissus latifolia and Holoptelea integrifolia were the dominant tree species *** highest values of tree density(1028 ind·hm-2)and total basal cover at breast height(31.70 m2 ·hm-2)were recorded for UD site of temperate region,whereas maximum species diversity(3.128)and equitability(14.09)values were observed for HD site of tropical *** structure and composition of the forests were greatly affected by the degree of disturbance.

MRI is a state of art imaging modality in characterization of indeterminate adnexal masses

Aims and Objectives: The aim of this diagnostic observational study was to find an association of final diagnosis of adnexal masses suggested by MRI and compare it as an imaging modality in determining the origin, nature (benign/malignant) & characteristics of adnexal masses by calculating sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy. Materials and Methods: The present study was carried out in 90 patients in the department of radio diagnosis and imaging, institute of medical sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The patients were referred from department of obstetrics & gynecology, institute of medical sciences. Majority of the referred cases were those who had clinical features of abdominal pain, abdominal lump, menstrual irregularity, ascites, and anorexia or weight loss & in whom adnexal mass was suspected clinically. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed using 1.5 Tesla MR Scanner, Magnetom Avanto (Siemens Healthcare). Results: Out of 114 masses, 17 (14.9%) were malignant. The benign adnexal masses were maximum in the age group 20 - 39 years (56/97, 57.7%), while malignant masses were mainly found in women ≥60 years of age (11/17, 64.7%). CA-125 level was grossly elevated in association with 35.3% of the malignant masses. On MRI, the sensitivity for the mass of ovarian origin was (97.7%) and specificity was (73.1%). The diagnostic accuracy was (92.1%). The mass of uterine origin had a sensitivity of (73.1%) and diagnostic accuracy (99.1%). Conclusion: MRI, because of its accuracy in identifying the origin of adnexal mass and characterizing the solid, hemorrhagic, fatty and fibrous content, may obviate surgery or significantly contribute to preoperative planning for a sonographically indeterminate mass. MRI is the state of the art imaging modality for evaluation of adnexal masses with an overall high diagnostic accuracy.

To the editor： Human immunodeficiency vires （HIV） infection is an epidemic of modem era. Primary HIV infection usually presents as fever, fatigue, lymphadenopathy, myalgia, nausea and diarrhoea. Neurological symptoms may present during primary infection in 9% of patients usually as aseptic meningitis or opportunistic infections. The occurrence of Guillian-Barre syndrome （GBS） during seroconversion of HIV is rare.

Bio-reduction of Sulphur Dyes with Alkaline Pectinase

Sulphur dyes are invariably applied on cotton to produce deep shades at cheaper cost possessing all-round fastness properties except against chlorine. Being water insoluble, these dyes are reduced and solubilised with sodium sulphide at boil to develop affinity for cotton. Application of sulphide has generated global debate because of its eco-unfriendly technology of dyeing. In this work, attempts were made to substitute sodium sulphide with alkaline pectinase. Obtained results suggested the ability of the latter to cause effective reduction and solubilisation of sulphur dyes. Stability of reduction baths as well as colour fastness was also reported to be in line with those obtained using sodium sulphide.

The Distances of Subclusters in the Virgo Area

By using the Mixture Model and radial velocity data from CfA redshift catalogue, we resolve the substructures of the Virgo cluster. Distances of three main subclusters are determined by the Tully-Fisher galaxies, they are 18.0±1.3Mpc, 25.0±2 3Mpc and 30.9±3.1Mpc respectively, which implicate that they are independent clusters, and the Virgo area has a significant depth in the line-of -sight direction.
