Comparative study of Eu^(3+)-activated LnOCl(Ln=La and Gd) phosphors and their Judd-Ofelt analysis

Eu3＋-activated layered LnOCI （Ln=La and Gd） phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state method at relatively low temperature （700 ℃） and shorter duration of 2 h. The structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld refinement analysis and confirmed by the high resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEM）. Both the compounds were crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm （No. 129）. The homogeneity of the elements were ana- lyzed by TEM mapping and found to be uniformly distributed. The photoluminescence spectra revealed that the intensity of 5D0--7F2 transition （619 nm） was more intense in Eu3＋-activated GdOC1 compared to LaOC1. This was due to the property of Gd3＋ ions to act as an intermediate sublattice to facilitate the energy transfer to Eu3＋ ions. Intensity parameters and radiative properties such as transition probabilities, radiative lifetime and branching ratio were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory. The CIE color coordinates result revealed that the Eu3＋-activated GdOC1 （0.641, 0.354） phosphor was close to the commercial red phosphors like, Y203：Eu3＋（0.645, 0.347）, Y202S：Eu3＋（0.647, 0.343） and National Television System Committee （NTSC）（0.67, 0.33）. The results suggest that the present GdOCI：Eu3＋ compound acts as a potential candidate for red phosphor materials.

Organic matters（OMs） and their oxidization products often influence the fate and transport of heavy metals in the subsurface aqueous systems through interaction with the mineral surfaces. This study investigates the ethanol（EtO H）-mediated As（Ⅲ） adsorption onto Zn-loaded pinecone（PC） biochar through batch experiments conducted under Box–Behnken design. The effect of EtO H on As（Ⅲ） adsorption mechanism was quantitatively elucidated by fitting the experimental data using artificial neural network and quadratic modeling approaches. The quadratic model could describe the limiting nature of EtO H and pH on As（Ⅲ） adsorption,whereas neural network revealed the stronger influence of Et OH（64.5%） followed by pH（20.75%）and As（Ⅲ） concentration（14.75%） on the adsorption phenomena. Besides, the interaction among process variables indicated that Et OH enhances As（Ⅲ） adsorption over a pH range of2 to 7, possibly due to facilitation of ligand–metal（Zn） binding complexation ***, hybrid response surface model–genetic algorithm（RSM–GA） approach predicted a better optimal solution than RSM, i.e., the adsorptive removal of As（Ⅲ）（10.47 μg/g） is facilitated at 30.22 mg C/L of Et OH with initial As（Ⅲ） concentration of 196.77 μg/L at pH 5.8. The implication of this investigation might help in understanding the application of biochar for removal of various As（Ⅲ） species in the presence of OM.

The particle flow pattern, mixing and granule segregation in a tapered fluidized bed have been studied along with the hydrodynamics. At first the bed of varying total mass and granule fractions is fluidized then the bed is defluidized to freeze the composition, the bed is sectioned to layers and the composition in each layer is determined by sieving. Materials used in the present study are dolomite and glass beads with different B.S.S Sizes. A series of unsteady, three fluid CFD simulations were performed using FLUENTTM 6.2. Simulation parameters viz. solution technique, grid, maximum packing fraction and operating conditions like gas velocity were investigated for relative effects on particle mixing and segregation. Good arrangement of solid volume fraction profile was obtained between the experimental results and simulation results for regular particles.

Cd coating is used in aerospace industries from last five decades due to its sacrificial protection and lubrication properties. Although Cd coating is primarily used due to its sacrificial corrosion protection when applied on steel substrate, the added benefit of modifying the tribological behavior by acting as a lubricious layer gives it a leading-edge than other coatings. Often the measurement of friction coefficient (CoF) is reported as a value generated after full sliding cycle. This measurement of average CoF generally limits the study of local variation in CoF occurring within one sliding cycle, which can be significantly different with change in spatial position due to change in third body morphology. In this study, a linearly reciprocating sliding test is used to measure the CoF at a sampling rate of 800 Hz along the track length to generate triboscopic image with steel countersphere. The instantaneous CoF obtained with triboscopy is correlated with the wear track morphology using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical profilometer for variation in contact conditions. Tribological test performed in dry atmosphere shows an average CoF of 0.4 till the end of the test whereas with increase in relative humidity to 60%, the average CoF changes from 0.4 to 0.8 at the end of the test due to change in contact conditions. Soft Cd coating on low carbon steel substrate is used to study these variations in third body morphology.

Gentiana kurroo, a potent bitter drug plant of Indian subcon- tinent, is under threat due to over exploitation and destruction of natural habitat. We studied the murphophenology and chromosomes of G. kurtoo on both wild and field grown plants, which is very important for proper identification, conservation and domestication. Results reveal that G. kurroo is a perennial herb, and its shoot is represented by flowering branches only. Stem is modified to rhizome. The older rhizomes split into four parts at collar region appearing to fuse together at the ends and is an important diagnostic feature for crude raw materials. Two types of leaves i.e. radical leaves at the base of the plant and canline leaves on flowering shoot are present. Flowering occurs during September to October with 1-9 inflorescences per plant. Inflorescence is terminal monoca- sial cysome type. Mowers are protrandus. Anthesis starts around 7.30 am and continued till 10.0 am. Ovary is bicarpillary syncarpous unilocular. Fruit is Capsule and takes 18-20 days to mature after fertilization. Seeds are very small elliptical and 1 000 seeds weigh to 0.1275 g. Chromosomal studies made by usual squash method reveals the species is a genomic allotetreploid with n = 13. The anaphase-I segregation was normal and in none of the cells at Anaphase-I or Telophase-I could any abnor- mality like laggards, bridges, micronuclei etc. be observed.
