Optimising multi-vent module-based adaptive ventilation using a novel parameter for improved indoor air quality and health protection

As infectious respiratory diseases are highly transmissible through the air,researchers have improved traditional total volume air distribution systems to reduce infection risk.Multi-vent module-based adaptive ventilation(MAV)is a novel ventilation type that facilitates the switching of inlets and outlets to suit different indoor scenarios without changing ductwork layout.However,little research has evaluated MAV module sizing and air velocity selection,both related to MAV system efficiency in removing contaminants and the corresponding level of protection for occupants in the ventilated room.Therefore,the module-source offset ratio(MSOR)is proposed,based on the MAV module size and its distance from an infected occupant,to inform selection of optimal MAV module parameters.Computational fluid dynamics simulations illustrated contaminant distribution in a two-person MAV equipped office.Discrete phase particles modelled respiratory contaminants from the infected occupant,and contaminant concentration distributions were compared under four MAV air distribution layouts,three air velocities,and three module sizes considered using the MsOR.Results indicate that lower air velocities favour rising contaminant levels,provided the ventilation rate is met.Optimal contaminant discharge can be achieved when the line of outlets is located directly above the infected occupant.Using this parameter to guide MAV system design,85.7% of contaminants may be rendered harmless to the human body within 120 s using the default air vent layout.A more appropriate supply air velocity and air vent layout increases this value to 91.4%.These results are expected to inform the deployment of MAV systems to reduce airborne infection risk.

Ionization Engineering of Hydrogels Enables Highly Efficient Salt‑Impeded Solar Evaporation and Night‑Time Electricity Harvesting

Interfacial solar evaporation holds immense potential for brine desalination with low carbon footprints and high energy utilization.Hydrogels,as a tunable material platform from the molecular level to the macroscopic scale,have been considered the most promising candidate for solar evaporation.However,the simultaneous achievement of high evaporation efficiency and satisfactory tolerance to salt ions in brine remains a challenging scientific bottleneck,restricting the widespread application.Herein,we report ionization engineering,which endows polymer chains of hydrogels with electronegativity for impeding salt ions and activating water molecules,fundamentally overcoming the hydrogel salt-impeded challenge and dramatically expediting water evaporating in brine.The sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate-modified carbon black is chosen as the solar absorbers.The hydrogel reaches a ground-breaking evaporation rate of 2.9 kg m−2 h−1 in 20 wt%brine with 95.6%efficiency under one sun irradiation,surpassing most of the reported literature.More notably,such a hydrogel-based evaporator enables extracting clean water from oversaturated salt solutions and maintains durability under different high-strength deformation or a 15-day continuous operation.Meantime,on the basis of the cation selectivity induced by the electronegativity,we first propose an all-day system that evaporates during the day and generates salinity-gradient electricity using waste-evaporated brine at night,anticipating pioneer a new opportunity for all-day resource-generating systems in fields of freshwater and electricity.

Learning to select the recombination operator for derivative-free optimization

Extensive studies on selecting recombination operators adaptively,namely,adaptive operator selection(AOS),during the search process of an evolutionary algorithm(EA),have shown that AOS is promising for improving EA's performance.A variety of heuristic mechanisms for AOS have been proposed in recent decades,which usually contain two main components:the feature extraction and the policy setting.The feature extraction refers to as extracting relevant features from the information collected during the search process.The policy setting means to set a strategy(or policy)on how to select an operator from a pool of operators based on the extracted feature.Both components are designed by hand in existing studies,which may not be efficient for adapting optimization problems.In this paper,a generalized framework is proposed for learning the components of AOS for one of the main streams of EAs,namely,differential evolution(DE).In the framework,the feature extraction is parameterized as a deep neural network(DNN),while a Dirichlet distribution is considered to be the policy.A reinforcement learning method,named policy gradient,is used to train the DNN.As case studies,the proposed framework is applied to two DEs including the classic DE and a recently-proposed DE,which result in two new algorithms named PG-DE and PG-MPEDE,respectively.Experiments on the Congress of Evolutionary Computation(CEC)2018 test suite show that the proposed new algorithms perform significantly better than their counterparts.Finally,we prove theoretically that the considered classic methods are the special cases of the proposed framework.

Ethanol changes Nestin-promoter induced neural stem cells to disturb newborn dendritic spine remodeling in the hippocampus of mice

Adolescent binge drinking leads to long-lasting disorders of the adult central nervous system,particularly aberrant hippocampal neurogenesis.In this study,we applied in vivo fluorescent tracing using NestinCreERT2::Rosa26-tdTomato mice and analyzed the endogenous neurogenesis lineage progression of neural stem cells(NSCs)and dendritic spine formation of newborn neurons in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus.We found abnormal orientation of tamoxifen-induced tdTomato+(tdTom^(+))NSCs in adult mice 2 months after treatment with EtOH(5.0 g/kg,i.p.)for 7 consecutive days.EtOH markedly inhibited tdTom^(+)NSCs activation and hippocampal neurogenesis in mouse dentate gyrus from adolescence to adulthood.EtOH(100 mM)also significantly inhibited the proliferation to 39.2%and differentiation of primary NSCs in vitro.Adult mice exposed to EtOH also exhibited marked inhibitions in dendritic spine growth and newborn neuron maturation in the dentate gyrus,which was partially reversed by voluntary running or inhibition of the mammalian target of rapamycinenhancer of zeste homolog 2 pathway.In vivo tracing revealed that EtOH induced abnormal orientation of tdTom+NSCs and spatial misposition defects of newborn neurons,thus causing the disturbance of hippocampal neurogenesis and dendritic spine remodeling in mice.

Modeling of Large-Scale Hydrogen Storage System Considering Capacity Attenuation and Analysis of Its Efficiency Characteristics

In the existing power system with a large-scale hydrogen storage system,there are problems such as low efficiency of electric-hydrogen-electricity conversion and single modeling of the hydrogen storage system.In order to improve the hydrogen utilization rate of hydrogen storage system in the process of participating in the power grid operation,and speed up the process of electric-hydrogen-electricity conversion.This article provides a detailed introduction to the mathematical and electrical models of various components of the hydrogen storage unit,and also establishes a charging and discharging efficiency model that considers the temperature and internal gas partial pressure of the hydrogen storage unit.These models are of great significance for studying and optimizing gas storage technology.Through these models,the performance of gas storage units can be better understood and improved.These studies are very helpful for improving energy storage efficiency and sustainable development.The factors affecting the charge-discharge efficiency of hydrogen storage units are analyzed.By integrating the models of each unit and considering the capacity degradation of the hydrogen storage system,we can construct an efficiency model for a large hydrogen storage system and power conversion system.In addition,the simulation models of the hydrogen production system and hydrogen consumption system were established in MATLAB/Simulink.The accuracy and effectiveness of the simulation model were proved by comparing the output voltage variation curve of the simulation with the polarization curve of the typical hydrogen production system and hydrogen consumption system.The results show that the charge-discharge efficiency of the hydrogen storage unit increases with the increase of operating temperature,and H2 and O2 partial voltage have little influence on the charge-discharge efficiency.In the process of power conversion system converter rectification operation,its efficiency decreases with the increase of temperature,while in the proc

In situ thermoresponsive supramolecular assembly for switchable circularly polarized luminescence

The dynamic regulation of circularly polarized luminescence(CPL)holds profound significance in various fields,such as highlevel information storage and encryption.Here we developed a chiral amphiphilic molecule,CPSB-GLU-PEG350(CGP),composed of aggregation-induced emission(AIE)chromophores(Z)-4-(1-cyano-2-phenylvinyl)benzoic acid(CPSB),a chiral linker Glutamic acid and polyethylene glycol(PEG)thermoresponsive segments.Within the self-assembled supramolecular system formed by CGP,we have achieved in-situ temperature-responsive chiral structures,facilitating the thermal control switch of the CPL signal.Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate the distinct behaviors of AIE and PEG units during the temperature-variable assembly process.Furthermore,by co-assembling achiral dye molecules with CGP,we have expanded the color range of the temperature-responsive CPL assembly system in situ and confirmed the occurrence of circularly polarizedF?rster resonance energy transfer(C-FRET)phenomenon in this process,which successfully enriched the strategies for in-situ CPL control in aqueous phases.In addition,the contactless radiative energy transfer of CPL can also be realized in this system,exhibiting more flexible temperature regulation of the CPL signal.This study provides a convenient and universal strategy for the construction of dynamically smart chiroptical materials.

The generation of speckle patterns via random matrices, statistical definitions, or apertures may not always result in optimal outcomes. Issues such as correlation fluctuations in low ensemble numbers and diffraction in long-distance propagation can arise. Instead of improving results of specific applications, our solution is catching deep correlations of patterns with the framework, Speckle-Net, which is fundamental and universally applicable to various systems. We demonstrate this in computational ghost imaging(CGI) and structured illumination microscopy(SIM). In CGI with extremely low ensemble number, it customizes correlation width and minimizes correlation fluctuations in illuminating patterns to achieve higher-quality images. It also creates non-Rayleigh nondiffracting speckle patterns only through a phase mask modulation, which overcomes the power loss in the traditional ring-aperture method. Our approach provides new insights into the nontrivial speckle patterns and has great potential for a variety of applications including dynamic SIM, X-ray and photo-acoustic imaging, and disorder physics.

Phenylboronic acid functionalized polyacrylonitrile fiber for efficient and green synthesis of bis(indolyl)methane derivatives

The use of fiber as a catalyst carrier to construct heterogeneous catalysts with good catalytic activity and recycling performance has received wide attention.In this study,three phenylboronic acid functionalized polyacrylonitrile fiber(PANF)catalysts were synthesized by amination and quaternization.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffractometry,scanning electron microscopy,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to verify the successful grafting of phenylboronic acid and the structural integrity of the fiber catalyst after recycling.The activity of the catalysts was explored with the Friedel–Crafts alkylation between indole and aromatic aldehydes.The results indicate that the synthesized catalyst(PANp-BAF)in which the phenylboronic acid functional group was linked at the para position,exhibited the highest catalytic activity for the Friedel–Crafts alkylation.The substrate scope experiments confirmed that the catalyst has outstanding catalytic activity for most aromatic aldehydes,especially for those containing moderate electron donating groups.Moreover,the catalyst can be reused eight times in water without significant decrease in its catalytic activity.Further,the scale-up experiment confirmed that the fiber catalyst has a certain potential for industrial application.
