On Culture-Bound Words in the Brothers＇ Grimm Fairy Tales and Their Equivalents in English Translations

The aim of the article is to connect the model of cognitive metonymy with the model of types of denotative equivalence highlighting the explanatory potential of the model of cognitive metonymy for describing and clarifying the use and occurrence of word equivalents in the English translations of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales by Margaret Taylor (1914) and Jack Zipes (1987). The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (GFT) can be seen in a wide sense as a source of the history of culture and social life in the German speaking countries of the nineteenth century. Culture bound words refer to a special cultural knowledge, which is in a historical sense not or not completely compatible with the structure of knowledge in our present days, and refer to a common cultural knowledge of the community of German speaking countries as well. This article describes the ways of using English equivalents in the translations of the GFT including lexical and cognitive procedures, which stand behind the use of certain equivalents. This leads to the theoretical question: Is it possible to extend the model of denotative equivalence using features of conceptual metonymy in rendering culture bound words in the target texts Investigating this, there can be established modifications in the theory of conceptual metonymy in the framework of cognitive linguistics.

Echinacea is one of the top ten selling medicinal herbs in Europe and United States. Commercially available formulations may contain different plant parts of three species (Echinacea purpurea, E. pallida, and E. angustifolia). Our study evaluates the diversity of microbial community associated with healthy E. purpurea clones and their ability to produce defense compounds. We recovered and identified thirty-nine fungal endophytes through the molecular methods in 15 distinct phylotypes, which were closely related to species of the following genera Ceratobasidium, Cladosporium Colletotrichum, Fusarium, Glomerella, and Mycoleptodiscus. These taxa were previously reported as decomposer and phytopathogenic fungi. The fungal community associated with two E. purpurea clones showed high richness and dominance indices with different distribution among plant organs. Crude extracts of fungal isolates were tested for antifungal and insecticidal biological activities. A total of 16 extracts (41%) showed antifungal properties;while just the extract of M. indicus exhibited larvicidal activity against A. aegypti. These results suggest that the symbiosis between the endophytic fungal community and micropropagated clones of E. purpurea was re-established after acclimatization to soil and the endophytic fungi produced compounds against phytopathogenic fungi.

This study investigates the parallel encoding of tone and declarative question intonation inBai,a Sino-Tibetan tone language spoken in the southwest of *** declarative questions in varied focus conditions and ended with different level tones were elicited via a picture-marking *** sentence final words were acoustically analyzed to reveal the effect of focus,tone,and question *** data shows that Bai speakers use prosody by expanding the pitch range,raising the pitch maximum and minimum,and lengthening the duration of the sentence-final word to distinguish declarative questions from statements in all focus conditions,regardless of the specific level *** present study thus reveals the use of prosodic cues for encoding lexical tones and interrogative meaning can be fine-grained and independent of each other.
