Cathodoluminescence Microscopy of Zircon in HP-and UHPMetamorphic Rocks: A Fundamental Technique for Assessing the Problem of Inclusions versus Pseudo-Inclusions

This paper shows how a faulty approach to the study of mineral inclusions in zircon can lead to misleading interpretations of the geological *** present and discuss two well-documented *** grains separated from HP metamorphic jadeitite of the Rio San Juan Complex,Dominican Republic,and from UHP pyrope quartzite of the Dora Maira Massif,northern Italy,were studied using cathodoluminescence(CL)techniques,in combination with mineral inclusion and age *** general,zircon from both localities shows inherited magmatic core domains with oscillatory zoning and metamorphic *** magmatic cores of zircon from the jadeitite yield ages of 115–117 Ma and host jadeite and omphacite which are of metamorphic origin and formed at about 78 *** from lawsonite blueschist,representing the country rock of the jadeitite,contains domains with oscillatory zoning that are nearly identical in age to the zircon cores from the adjacent jadeitite,and also contains younger metamorphic minerals such as lawsonite,albite,phengite(Si3.68),chlorite,and *** observations were made on the magmatic cores of zircon from the pyrope *** are about 275 Ma in age and host pyrope,phengite(Si3.55),talc,and kyanite,all of which formed during UHP metamorphism at about 35 *** from the biotite-phengite-gneiss country rock(metagranite)shows oscillatory zoning and yields ages that are identical to those of the magmatic cores of zircon from pyrope quartzite,which thus reflect granitic intrusion *** country-rock zircon also encloses metamorphic minerals with ages of about 35 *** minerals are,for example,garnet and phengite,as well as a polymineralic assemblage of clinopyroxene+garnet+phengite+quartz,that point to formation at UHP metamorphic conditions around 40 kbar/750℃.Based on these examples we suggest an effective approach centered on key evidence from CL studies to show that magmatic domains of zircon may actually contain pseudo-inclusions whic

Experimental constraints on the genesis of Jadeite quartzite from Shuanghe,Dabie Mountain ultra-high pressure metamorphic terrane

Jadeite quartzite, essentially a two-phase rock made up of jadeite and quartz, is one of the most important UHP lithologies occur- ring in the Dabie Mountain ultrahigh pressure metamorphic belt and forms layers in biotite-plagioclase gneiss. High pressure- high temperature studies on natural albite from the country rock gneiss were undertaken to reveal the--in parts----complex mineralogical changes that occur in the jadeite quartzite during prograde metamorphism. Experiments were conducted at 800- 1200~C, in the pressure range of 2.0-3.5 GPa. One of the most intriguing results shows that the low pressure boundary of the jadeite＋coesite stability field is located between about 3.2 GPa at 1000~C and 3.4 GPa at 1200~C, thus about （0.2-0.3）_＋0.1 GPa higher than the quartz-coesite transition curve, given the uncertainty in the present study. Minor amounts of sodium and aluminum entering the structure of quartz and the intimate intergrowth texture of the run products may contribute to the ob- served pressure shift. Combined petrological and mineralogical studies on the run products and the natural rocks yield the fol- lowing prograde reaction sequence to have occurred： The protolith of the jadeite- quartzite from Dabie Mountain is an albitized siltstone/greywacke characterized by an albite＋quartz assemblage. During prograde metamorphism albite breaks down to form jadeite＋quartz and thus at this stage two types of quartz can be distinguished whereas type-I-quartz already existed in the pro- tolith, type-II-quartz represents a newly formed reaction product of albite. During further P-T-increase the pure type- I-quartz was transformed to coesite, whereas type-II-quartz （together with jadeite） was still present as a stable phase because of its im- purities of Na and A1. At a later stage during further subduction, type-II-quartz also decomposes to form coesite. First finding of continental deep subduction in the Sesia Zone of the Western Alps and implications for subduction dynamics

Continental deep subduction after the closure of large oceanic basins is commonly ascribed to the gravitational pull of the subducting oceanic ***,it is not clear how continental lithosphere adjacent to small oceanic basins was subducted to mantle *** Sesia Zone in the Western Alps provides an excellent target for exploration of subduction dynamics in such a tectonic *** we report the first finding of coesite in a jadeite-bearing orthogneiss from the Sesia Zone,providing the first evidence for deep subduction of the continental crust to mantle depths for ultrahigh-pressure(UHP)metamorphism in this *** coesite inclusions were identified by laser Raman spectroscopy in two garnet *** on zircon U-Pb dating and trace element analysis, the UHP metamorphic age was constrained to be 76.0 ±1.0 *** phase equilibrium modeling yields peak metamorphic pressures of2.8-3.3 GPa,demonstrating the continental deep subduction to mantle depths of>80 *** subducted continental crust was a rifted hyperextended continental margin,which was converted to the passive continental margin during seafloor spreading and then deeply subducted during the oblique convergence between the Adria microplate and Eurasian plate in the Late *** the slab pull could only play a limited role in closing small oceanic basins for continental collision,the distal push of either continental breakup or seafloor spreading is suggested as the major driving force for the deep subduction of continental crust in the Western ***,deep subduction of the continental crust bordering small oceanic basins would have been induced by the far-field stress of compression,whereas that bordering large oceanic basins was spontaneous due to the oceanic slab *** provides a new insight into the geodynamic me chanism of continental deep subduction.

Zircon geochemistry such as U-Pb and O isotopes have been widely used in dating and tracing complex geological ***,it still remains unclear how fluid action affects zircon geochemistry during metamorphic and metasomatic processes in subduction *** a systematic study on zircon U-Pb dating,O isotopes and trace elements as well as whole-rock O isotopes was carried out for the coesite-bearing whiteschists,jadeite quartzites and granitic gneisses from the Dora-Maira Massif,Western ***-rock and zircon geochemistry supports a common protolith,i.e.,Permian S-type granites,for the above three types of rocks and an intense fluid metasomatism during the Alpine orogeny to form whiteschists and jadeite *** cores in all samples have nearly identicalδ^(18)O values(9‰–11‰),whereas their apparent^(206)Pb/^(238)U ages show a greater variability due to Pb loss during *** rims formed in the late Eocene to early Oligocene can be categorized into two ***-Ⅰrims occur in granitic gneisses and jadeite *** have highδ^(18)O values consistent with zircon cores,but much lower contents of P and Y as well as lower Th/U ratios than the *** growth can be attributed to internal metamorphic fluid action at the UHP metamorphic ***-II rims occur in whiteschists and jadeite *** have remarkably lowerδ^(18)O values(5‰–8‰)and Th/U ratios(<0.01),compared with zircon cores and Type-Ⅰ*** growth can be ascribed to external fluids during the metasomatic *** zircon domains in whiteschists and jadeite quartzites show a positive correlation betweenδ^(18)O values and apparent^(206)Pb/^(238)U ages,which suggest the simultaneous impacts on U-Pb-O isotopes during external fluid *** process can be attributed to the fluidassisted dissolution and recrystallization of protolith ***,coesite inclusions that would have been expected to occur only in young zircon rims formed duri

Natural End Member Samples of Pyrope and Grossular:A Cathodoluminescence-Microscopy and-Spectra Case Study

Garnet is one of the most significant minerals in metamorphic rocks, that provides key information on prograde, peak-metamorphic and retrograde parts of the pressure-temperature （PT） path. Such results require a detailed knowledge of its different growth domains. For iron-poor compositions, the cathodoluminescence （CL） microscopy is an important and often overlooked method and allows to identify the internal structures of all garnet grains in one thin section within only a few seconds. The advantage of the CL-microscope is to deliver low magnification images in true color, not only of garnet but also, for instance, of other rock forming silicates, carbonates, sulfates, etc., of metamorphic, but also of sedimentary and magmatic origin, using polished thin sections. Internal structures of grossular from Mexico and pyrope from the Italian Alps were characterized and visualized by CL-microscopy. The different growth domains were additionally studied using CL-spectra and electron microprobe （EMP） analysis. Grossular shows a patchy zonation in its core while in mantle and rim zones oscillatory zoning is observed. It contains zones of anomalous birefringence, zones of orange and bluish luminescence and zones lacking luminescence. Different but low amounts of the activator elements Mn2＋ and Eu2＋ are responsible for the orange and bluish luminescent domains. Pyrope is also characterized by oscillatory growth zones, shows a dull luminescent core with a change of crystal morphology during growth, and displays an increase of brightness from core towards rim--the outermost rim, however, is lacking luminescence. The different luminescent zones are characterized by different amounts of Dy3＋, Tb3＋, Sm3＋ and Sm2＋ as activator elements. Timanide(Ediacaran–Early Cambrian) Metamorphism at the Transition from Eclogite to Amphibolite Facies in the Beloretsk Complex,SW-Urals,Russia

The Beloretsk Metamorphic Complex in the SW Urals formed at a convergent eastern margin of Baltica during the Neoproterozoic–Early Cambrian Timanide *** comprises three major units with lenses of facies-critical metabasites within metasedimentary rocks:A lowermost eclogite unit,an intermediate garnet amphibolite unit and an upper amphibolite-greenschist ***(P)-temperature(T)-paths of four rocks from the two lowermost units were determined mainly by PT pseudosection techniques showing similar clockwise loops at different peak metamorphic,watersaturated conditions:A phengite-bearing eclogite shows peak PT conditions of 16.5–18.5 kbar/525–550℃(stage I)followed by stage II at 11.5–13.0 kbar/585–615℃.A garnet amphibolite from the intermediate unit yields lower peak conditions of 11.7–14.5 kbar/480–510℃(stage I)followed by stage II at 9.5–11.0 kbar/535–560℃.However,a granite gneiss in the eclogite unit shows similar maximum pressures as the eclogite,but higher temperatures at 15.6–16.2 kbar/660–675℃,whereas a garnet micaschist contains comparable high pressure relicts,but underwent an advanced midcrustal reequilibration at 7.5–9.0 kbar/555–610℃.We dated the eclogite by a 7-point Rb/Sr mineral isochron(phengite,omphacite,apatite)at 532.2±9.1 Ma interpreted as age of crystallisation of the eclogitic peak PT *** age is the youngest compared to the known Timanide metamorphic and magmatic ages.

The mobility of redox sensitive elements such as iron, carbon and sulfur in subduction zone fluids is important for redox transfer between the subducting slab and mantle wedge. However, the speciation of Fe during its mobility in subduction zone fluids at forearc depths is still unclear. Here, we studied the Fe isotope compositions of highpressure （HP） fluid-metasomatic rocks （leucophyllite and transitional gneiss） from the Eastern Alps and found two distinct types of Fe species during Fe mobility in subduction zone fluids. The protolith of both types of rocks is metagranite, which show δ56Fe values of 0.12 ~ 0.25‰.
