Using 1958-2002 NCEPNCAR reanalysis data, we investigate stationary and transient planetary wave propagation and its role in wave-mean flow interaction which influences the state of the polar vortex （PV） in the stratosphere in Northern Hemisphere （NH） winter. This is done by analyzing the Eliassen-Palm （E-P） flux and its divergence. We find that the stationary and transient waves propagate upward and equatorward in NH winter, with stronger upward propagation of stationary waves from the troposphere to the stratosphere, and stronger equatorward propagation of transient waves from mid-latitudes to the subtropics in the troposphere. Stationary waves exhibit more upward propagation in the polar stratosphere during the weak polar vortex regime （WVR） than during the strong polar vortex regime （SVR）. On the other hand, transient waves have more upward propagation during SVR than during WVR in the subpolar stratosphere, with a domain of low frequency waves. With different paths of upward propagation, both stationary and transient waves contribute to the maintenance of the observed stratospheric PV regimes in NH winter.

A decadal change in summer rainfall in the Asian inland plateau（AIP） region is identified around 1999. This decadal change is characterized by an abrupt decrease in summer rainfall of about 15.7% of the climatological average amount,leading to prolonged drought in the Asian inland plateau region. Both the surface air temperature and potential evapotranspiration in the AIP show a significant increase, while the soil moisture exhibits a decrease, after the late 1990s. furthermore,the normalized difference vegetation index shows an apparent decreasing trend during 1999–2007. Three different drought indices—the standardized precipitation index, the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index, and the self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index—present pronounced climate anomalies during 1999–2007, indicating dramatic drought exacerbation in the region after the late 1990s. This decadal change in the summer rainfall may be attributable to a wave-like teleconnection pattern from Western Europe to Asia. A set of model sensitivity experiments suggests that the summer warming sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic could induce this teleconnection pattern over Eurasia, resulting in recent drought in the AIP region.

Based on the NCEP/ NCAR reanalysis data the interannual variability of the East Asian winter mon-soon (EAWM) is studied with a newly defined EAWM intensity index. The marked features for a strong (weak) winter monsoon include strong (weak) northerly winds along coastal East Asia, cold (warm) East Asian continent and surrounding sea and warm (cold) ocean from the subtropical central Pacific to the trop-ical western Pacific, high (low) pressure in East Asian continent and low (high) pressure in the adjacent ocean and deep (weak) East Asian trough at 500 hPa. These interannual variations are shown to be closely connected to the SST anomaly in the tropical Pacific, both in the western and eastern Pacific. The results suggest that the strength of the EAWM is mainly influenced by the processes associated with the SST anom-aly over the tropical Pacific. The EAWM generally becomes weak when there is a positive SST anomaly in the tropical eastern Pacific (El Ni?o), and it becomes strong when there is a negative SST anomaly (La Ni?a). Moreover, the SST anomaly in the South China Sea is found to be closely related to the EAWM and may persist to the following summer. Both the circulation at 850 hPa and the rainfall in China confirm the connection between the EAWM and the following East Asian summer monsoon. The possible reason for the recent 1998 summer flood in China is briefly discussed too. Protein complexes are important for almost all biological ***,to fully understand how cells work,it is also necessary to characterize protein complexes and their dynamics in response to various cellular ***,the dynamics of protein interaction play crucial roles in regulating the(dis)association of protein complexes and,in turn,regulating biological processes such as ***,mitochondrial protein complexes were investigated by blue native PAGE and size-exclusion chromatography under conditions of oxidative stress in order to monitor their dynamic(dis)*** of enzyme interactions and changes in protein complex abundance were observed in response to oxidative stress induced by menadione *** included changes in enzymatic protein complexes involving g-amino butyric acid transaminase(GABA-T),D-ornithine aminotransferase(D-OAT),or proline dehydrogenase 1(POX1)that are expected to affect proline *** treatment also affected interactions between several enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid(TCA)cycle and the abundance of complexes of the oxidative phosphorylation *** addition,we compared the mitochondrial complexes of roots and *** differences between the two tissues were observed in the mitochondrial import/export apparatus,the formation of super-complexes in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway,and specific interactions between enzymes of the TCA cycle that we postulate may be related to the metabolic/energetic requirements of roots and shoots.

AIM： To investigate the effects of catalytically superior gene-directed enzyme prodrug therapy systems on a rat hepatoma model. METHODS： To increase hepatoma cell chemosensitivity for the prodrug 5-fluorocytosine （5-fC）, we generated a chimeric bifunctional SuperCD suicide gene, a fusion of the yeast cytosine deaminase （YCD） and the yeast uracil phosphoribosyltransferase （YUPRT） gene. RESULTS： In vitro stably transduced Morris rat hepatoma cells （MH） expressing the bifunctional SuperCD suicide gene （MH SuperCD） showed a clearly marked enhancement in cell killing when incubated with 5-fC as compared with MH cells stably expressing YCD solely （MH YCD） or the cytosine deaminase gene of bacterial origin （MH BCD）, respectively. In vivo, MH SuperCD tumors implanted both subcutaneously as well as orthotopically into the livers of syngeneic ACI rats demonstrated significant tumor regressions （P〈0.01） under both high dose as well as low dose systemic 5-fC application, whereas MH tumors without transgene expression （MH naive） showed rapid progression. for the first time, an order of in vivo suicide gene effectiveness （SuperCD〉〉 YCD〉〉BCD〉〉〉negative control） was defined as a result of a direct in vivo comparison of all three suicide genes. CONCLUSION： Bifunctional SuperCD suicide gene expression is highly effective in a rat hepatoma model, thereby significantly improving both the therapeutic index and the efficacy of hepatocellular carcinoma killing by fluorocytosine.

AIM:To investigate the proteolytic contribution of tumor-associated macrophages(TAM)in tumor invasion,we analyzed whether TAM at the invasive front of small HCC in Abcb4-/--mice show an enhanced expression of MMP-9. METHODS:Liver cryosections of the hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)invasive front from 12 mo old Abcb4-/--mice were stained for collagen typeⅠand MMP-9 using Alexa488 and Alexa568 labeled secondary ***,the Alexa568 dye was bleached and the macrophage marker f4/80 was visualized using Alexa568 labeled secondary ***, photographs of the invasive tumor front were digitally overlaid and analyzed. RESULTS:After complete bleaching of the primary dye,specific fluorescence staining of a third antigen, here f4/80,was successfully performed on the same histological *** this method,we were able to identify conglomerates of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9)expressing macrophages within the tumor capsule of HCC. CONCLUSION:MMP-9 expressing macrophages are involved in matrix remodelling at the invasive tumor front of *** described staining protocol provides a simple yet powerful extension of conventional immuno-histochemistry,facilitating visualization of at least three different antigens plus nuclei in one single histological section.
