Petrology,geochronology,and geophysical characterization of Mesoproterozoic rocks in central Illinois,USA

The Precambrian basement rocks of the Eastern Granite-Rhyolite Province(EGRP)in central Illinois(midcontinent region of North America)exhibit a complex history of early volcanism,granite emplacement,and intrusion of mafic rocks.A comprehensive suite of dedicated petrographic analyses,geophysical logs,and drill core from four basement-penetrating wells,two-dimensional and three-dimensional seismic reflection data,and U-Pb age data from the Illinois Basin–Decatur Project(IBDP)and Illinois Carbon Capture Storage(ICCS)Project site provide new constraints for interpreting the Precambrian basement of the Illinois Basin.These new data reveal the basement to be compositionally and structurally complex,having typical EGRP felsic volcanic rocks intruded by the first reported gabbro in the Precambrian basement in Illinois.Zircons(n?29)from rhyolite give a U-Pb weighted mean average age of 14679 Ma.Zircons(n?3)from a gabbro dike that intrudes the rhyolite yield a concordia age of 107312 Ma,which corresponds to Grenville-age extension and represents the first Grenville-age rock in Illinois and in the EGRP.A high-resolution three-dimensional seismic reflection volume,coincident with the four wells,provides a context for interpreting the petrological data and implies a high degree of heterogeneity for basement rocks at the IBDP–ICCS site,as also shown by the drill cores.The occurrence of Grenville-age gabbro is related to a prominent bowl-like structure observed on local two-dimensional seismic reflection profiles and the three-dimensional volume that is interpreted as a deep-seated mafic sill complex.Furthermore,heterogeneities such as the brecciated EGRP rhyolite and later gabbro intrusion observed in the basement lithology at the IBDP–ICCS may reflect previously unknown distal elements of the 1.1 Ga Midcontinent Rift in the EGRP and more likely Grenville-age extension.

Canonical Workflows in Simulation-based Climate Sciences

In this paper we present the derivation of Canonical Workflow Modules from current workflows in simulation-based climate science in support of the elaboration of a corresponding framework for simulationbased research.We first identified the different users and user groups in simulation-based climate science based on their reasons for using the resources provided at the German Climate Computing Center(DKRZ).What is special about this is that the DKRZ provides the climate science community with resources like high performance computing(HPC),data storage and specialised services,and hosts the World Data Center for Climate(WDCC).Therefore,users can perform their entire research workflows up to the publication of the data on the same infrastructure.Our analysis shows,that the resources are used by two primary user types:those who require the HPC-system to perform resource intensive simulations to subsequently analyse them and those who reuse,build-on and analyse existing data.We then further subdivided these top-level user categories based on their specific goals and analysed their typical,idealised workflows applied to achieve the respective project goals.We find that due to the subdivision and further granulation of the user groups,the workflows show apparent differences.Nevertheless,similar"Canonical Workflow Modules"can be clearly made out.These modules are"Data and Software(Re)use","Compute","Data and Software Storing","Data and Software Publication","Generating Knowledge"and in their entirety form the basis for a Canonical Workflow Framework for Research(CWFR).It is desirable that parts of the workflows in a CWFR act as FDOs,but we view this aspect critically.Also,we reflect on the question whether the derivation of Canonical Workflow modules from the analysis of current user behaviour still holds for future systems and work processes.

Effects of external temperature and dead volume on laboratory measurements of pore pressure and injected volume in a rock fracture

The accurate evaluation of pore pressure and injected volume is crucial for the laboratory characterization of hydromechanical responses of rock fractures. This study reports a series of laboratory experiments to systematically demonstrate the effects of external temperature and dead volume on laboratory measurements of pore pressure and injected volume in a rock fracture. We characterize the hydraulic aperture of the fracture as a function of effective normal stress using the exponential aperture model.This model is then employed to predict the pore pressure change and injected volume in the fracture without the influences of external temperature and dead volume. The external temperature changes in the cyclic loading test due to the Joule-Thompson effect for fluids. The effect of external temperature on pore pressure change in the fracture can be well explained by thermal pressurization of fluids. Our results also show that the external dead volume can significantly lower the pore pressure change in the fracture during the cyclic loading test under undrained conditions. The injected volume can also be substantially enlarged due to the external dead volume in a typical pore pressure system. Internal measurement of the pore pressure in the fracture using a fiber optic sensor cannot exclude the influences of external temperature and dead volume, primarily because of the good hydraulic communication between the fracture and pore pressure system. This study suggests that the effects of external temperature and dead volume on pore pressure response and injected volume should be evaluated for accurate laboratory characterization and inter-laboratory comparison.

Efficient,high-CRI white LEDs by combining traditional phosphors with cadmium-free InP/ZnSe red quantum dots

Quantum dots(QDs) offer an interesting alternative for traditional phosphors in on-chip light-emitting diode(LED) configurations.Earlier studies showed that the spectral efficiency of white LEDs with high color rendering index(CRI) values could be considerably improved by replacing red-emitting nitride phosphors with narrowband QDs.However,the red QDs in these studies were cadmium-based,which is a restricted element in the EU and certain other countries.The use of InP-based QDs,the most promising Cd-free alternative,is often presented as an inferior solution because of the broader linewidth of these QDs.However,while narrow emission lines are the key to display applications that require a large color gamut,the spectral efficiency penalty of this broader emission is limited for lighting applications.Here,we report efficient,high-CRI white LEDs with an on-chip color converter coating based on red InP/ZnSe QDs and traditional green/yellow powder phosphors.Using InP/ZnSe QDs with a quantum yield of nearly 80% and a full width at half-maximum of 45 nm,we demonstrate high spectral efficiency for white LEDs with very high CRI values.One of the best experimental results in terms of both luminous efficacy and color rendering performance is a white LED with an efficacy of 132 lm/W,and color rendering indices of R_(a)≈90,R9 ≈50 for CCT ≈4000 K.These experimental results are critically compared with theoretical benchmark values for white LEDs with on-chip downconversion from both phosphors and red Cd-based QDs.The various loss mechanisms in the investigated white LEDs are quantified with an accurate simulation model,and the main impediments to an even higher efficacy are identified as the blue LED wall-plug Quantum dots(QDs) offer an interesting alternative for traditional phosphors in on-chip light-emitting diode(LED) configurations.Earlier studies showed that the spectral efficiency of white LEDs with high color rendering index(CRI) values could be considerably improved by replacing red-emitting nitride phosphors with narr

Pancreatitis, panniculitis and polyarthritis syndrome: A case report

BACKGROUND Pancreatitis,panniculitis,and polyarthritis(PPP)syndrome is a rare form of pancreatic disease.It is characterized by bullous erythematous skin lesions and arthritis,and both are triggered by pancreatic malfunction.Few cases have been described in the literature thus far.Due to the inconsistency in its clinical presentation,its diagnosis can be a challenge.Early therapy initiation is essential to reduce mortality;however,there is currently no gold standard for treatment.CASE SUMMARY A 66-year-old polymorbid male patient presented with several superficial abscesses on both lower legs and painful swelling in the knee.Treatment for septic arthritis and septic skin infection over several weeks failed.His general condition deteriorated gradually and worsened with sudden onset of abdominal pain.A diagnosis of necrotizing pancreatitis was made.He subsequently underwent a laparotomy and drainage of the pancreas.Eventually,our patient improved,and his abdominal complaints,knee pain,and dermal lesions resolved.CONCLUSION PPP syndrome is rare and easily misdiagnosed,as abdominal symptoms may be delayed or absent.Clinicians should consider PPP syndrome if they encounter refractory panniculitis in combination with joint infection.

Attosecond magnetization dynamics in non-magnetic materials driven by intense femtosecond lasers

Irradiating solids with ultrashort laser pulses is known to initiate femtosecond timescale magnetization dynamics.However,sub-femtosecond spin dynamics have not yet been observed or predicted.Here,we explore ultrafast light-driven spin dynamics in a highly nonresonant strong-field regime.Through state-of-the-art ab initio calculations,we predict that a nonmagnetic material can transiently transform into a magnetic one via dynamical extremely nonlinear spin-flipping processes,which occur on attosecond timescales and are mediated by cascaded multi-photon and spin–orbit interactions.These are nonperturbative nonresonant analogs to the inverse Faraday effect,allowing the magnetization to evolve in very high harmonics of the laser frequency(e.***.here up to the 42nd,oscillating at~100 attoseconds),and providing control over the speed of magnetization by tuning the laser power and wavelength.Remarkably,we show that even for linearly polarized driving,where one does not intuitively expect the onset of an induced magnetization,the magnetization transiently oscillates as the system interacts with light.This response is enabled by transverse light-driven currents in the solid,and typically occurs on timescales of~500 attoseconds(with the slower femtosecond response suppressed).An experimental setup capable of measuring these dynamics through pump–probe transient absorption spectroscopy is simulated.Our results pave the way for attosecond regimes of manipulation of magnetism.

The role of GI-supported methods in crisis management

Crisis and disaster management has become an important research field in GIS during recent years.Risk assessment and situation picture-related work are particularly important areas of interest.There are distinct phases in different crises;these can be roughly divided into mitigation,preparedness,response,and recovery.In this paper a general classification of methods in each phase is given with examples on recent or ongoing research projects.The framework is based on literature and experiences from crisis and disaster-related exercises.Three case studies are based on those exercises.The goal is to clarify the role and usability of various GI-supported methods in the crisis management process by outlining a theoretical framework and presenting examples of the developed methods.Continuously increasing amount of spatially related geographic information is a huge potential to the GI analysis and modeling methods;the concept of digital earth is the underlying mainstream that gives lots of promise to the research and development work in this field.

Hot electron electrochemistry at silver activated by femtosecond laser pulses

A silver microelectrode with a diameter of 30μm in an aqueous K_(2)SO_(4) electrolyte was irradiated with 55 fs and 213 fs laser pulses.This caused the emission of electrons which transiently charged the electrochemical double layer.The two applied pulse durations were significantly shorter than the electron-phonon relaxation time.The laser pulse durations had negligible impact on the emitted charge,which is incompatible with multiphoton emission.On the other hand,the ob-served dependence of emitted charge on laser fluence and electrode potential supports the thermionic emission mechanism.

Automatic object annotation in streamed and remotely explored large 3D reconstructions

We introduce a novel framework for 3 D scene reconstruction with simultaneous object annotation,using a pre-trained 2 D convolutional neural network(CNN),incremental data streaming,and remote exploration,with a virtual reality setup.It enables versatile integration of any 2 D box detection or segmentation network.We integrate new approaches to(i)asynchronously perform dense 3 D-reconstruction and object annotation at interactive frame rates,(ii)efficiently optimize CNN results in terms of object prediction and spatial accuracy,and(iii)generate computationally-efficient colliders in large triangulated3 D-reconstructions at run-time for 3 D scene interaction.Our method is novel in combining CNNs with long and varying inference time with live 3 D-reconstruction from RGB-D camera input.We further propose a lightweight data structure to store the 3 D-reconstruction data and object annotations to enable fast incremental data transmission for real-time exploration with a remote client,which has not been presented before.Our framework achieves update rates of 22 fps(SSD Mobile Net)and 19 fps(Mask RCNN)for indoor environments up to 800 m^(3).We evaluated the accuracy of 3 D-object detection.Our work provides a versatile foundation for semantic scene understanding of large streamed3 D-reconstructions,while being independent from the CNN’s processing time.Source code is available for non-commercial use.

The role of temperature‐enhanced fault closure in promoting postinjection pressure diffusion and seismicity in enhanced geothermal systems

Post shut‐in seismic events in enhanced geothermal systems(EGSs)occur predominantly at the outer rim of the co‐injection seismic cloud.The concept of postinjection fracture and fault closure near the injection well has been proposed and validated as a mechanism for enhancing post shut‐in pressure diffusion that promotes seismic hazard.This phenomenon is primarily attributed to the poro‐elastic closure of fractures resulting from the reduction of wellbore pressure after injection termination.However,the thermal effects in EGSs,mainly including heat transfer and thermal stress,may not be trivial and their role in postinjection fault closure and pressure evolution needs to be explored.In this study,we performed numerical simulations to analyze the relative importance of poro‐elasticity,heat transfer,and thermo‐elasticity in promoting postinjection fault closure and pressure diffusion.The numerical model wasﬁrst validated against analytical solutions in terms ofﬂuid pressure diffusion and against heatedﬂow‐through experiments in terms of thermal processes.We then quantiﬁed and distinguished the contribution of each individual mechanism by comparing four different shut‐in scenarios simulated under different coupled conditions.Our results highlight the importance of poro‐elastic fault closure in promoting postinjection pressure buildup and seismicity,and suggest that heat transfer can further augment the fault closure‐induced pressure increase and thus potentially intensify the postinjection seismic hazard,with minimal contribution from thermo‐elasticity.
