Fixed bimonthly aflibercept in nave and switched neovascular age-related macular degeneration patients:one year outcomes

AIM: To determine real life clinical outcomes in poorly responsive and treatment-nave neovascular age-related macular degeneration(nv AMD) patients using bimonthly fixed dosing aflibercept ***: This was a retrospective study of 165 eyes with nv AMD started on aflibercept at Southampton Eye Unit between June 2013 and June 2014. Patients were either switched from pro re nata(PRN) ranibizumab/bevacizumab due to poor response(107 eyes), or treatment- nave( 58 eyes). Patients initially received 3-monthly intravitreal aflibercept injections followed by 2-monthly fixed doses. Clinic visits were scheduled at month 0, 4, 10 and 12. Mean change in best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) and central retinal thickness(CRT)from baseline were assessed using the Wilcoxon signedrank test. The proportion of patients maintaining BCVA(hange at month 12 was +3.29 and +4.67 letters in the switched and nave aflibercept groups respectively(P hed and 96.6% of nave patients. CRT at month 12 showed a decrease of -6.16 μm in the switched group and -35.36 μm in the nave group(P h ranibizumab/bevacizumab had on average received 7.4 ranibizumab/bevacizumab injections over 12.6 mo, attending 10 clinic visits. The fixed dosing aflibercept regimen required an average of 7.1 injections(nave group), 7.5 injections(switched group) and 4 clinic visits per ***: Fixed bimonthly aflibercept is effective in both treatment-nave and poorly responsive nv AMD patients. Adopting a fixed dosing regimen can reduce patient burden without compromising on outcomes.

A critical literature review of bioretention research for stormwater management in cold climate and future research recommendations

Bioretention is a popular best management practice of low impact development that el/ecUvely restores urban hydrologic characteristics to those ofpredevelopment and improves water quality prior to conveyance to surface waters. This is achieved by utilizing an engineered system containing a surface layer of mulch, a thick soil media often amended with a variety of materials to improve water oualitv, a variety of vegetation, and underdrains, depending on the surrounding soil *** systems have been studied quite extensively for warm climate applications, but ctata strongly supporting their long-tema efficacy and application in cold climates is sparse. Although it is apparent that biorelention is an effective stormwater management system, its design in cold climate needs further research. Existing cold climate research has shown that coarser media is required to prevent concrete frost from forming. For spring, summer and fall seasons, if sufficient permeability exists to drain the system prior to freezing, peak flow and volume reduction can be maintained. Additionally. contaminants that are removed via filtration are also not impacted by cold climates. In contrary, dissolved contaminants, nutrients, and organics are significantly more variable in their ability to be removed or degraded via bioretention in colder temperatures. Winter road maintenance salts have been shown to negatively impact the removal of some contaminants and positively impact others, while their effects on properly selected vegetation or bacteria health are also not well understood. Research in these water quality aspects has been inconsistent and therefore requires further study.

Changes of water chemistry from rainfall to stream flow in Obagbile Catchment, Southwest Nigeria

Water chemistry changes when it flows through different *** study aims to characterize the differences of water(including rainwater,overland flow,soil water,groundwater,and stream water)chemistry of five kinds of water in Obagbile Catchment in Southwest Nigeria,determine the changes in water chemistry that occur as the water moves from one pathway to another,and identify the factors responsible for the water chemistry *** do these,we collected 50 water samples from 10 heavy storms that received equal to or more than 10 mm of rain within an hour to test the changes of water chemical properties across various pathways in this *** results show that overland flow had the highest p h and electrical conductivity(EC)and rainwater had the lowest values of the two ***^(2+),Mg^(2+),Cl^(ˉ),and hCOO^(ˉ) were found to have their highest concentrations in stream water;meanwhile,NO_(3)^(–),Nh_(4)^(+),and SO_(4)^(2–) were found to have almost the same low concentrations in all the water samples.K+was only dominant in stream water;while dissolved organic carbon(DOC)was lowest in rainwater,same in overland flow,soil water,and groundwater samples,and highest in stream *** component analysis(PCA)showed that for all the water samples from different pathways,two factors mainly accounted for the total *** two factors were related to the crustal and anthropogenic sources in rainwater,suggesting that the high loadings of major cations(e.g.,Ca^(2+) and Mg^(2+)) in rainwater samples are *** PCA for the overland flow and soil water showed strong correlations among ph,EC,and the concentrations of Na^(+),Mg^(2+),hCOO^(-),and Ch_(3)COO^(-),while the high loadings of all the parameters and the strong correlations among each other were evident in the stream *** conclusion,the chemical constituents found in water are also the components of pathways through which the water *** major factors responsible for the change in the

Proinflammatory cytokine TNFα promotes hPV-associated oral carcinogenesis by increasing cancer stemness

high-risk human papillomaviruses(hPVs) are involved in the development of several human cancers, including oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas. however, many studies have demonstrated that hPV alone is not sufficient for the oncogenic transformation of normal human epithelial cells, indicating that additional cofactors are required for the oncogenic conversion of hPV-infected cells. Inasmuch as chronic inflammation is also closely associated with carcinogenesis, we investigated the effect of chronic exposure to tumor necrosis factor α(TNFα), the major proinflammatory cytokine, on oncogenesis in two immortalized oral keratinocyte cell lines, namely, hPV16-immortalized and human telomerase reverse transcriptase(h TERT)-immortalized cells. TNFαtreatment led to the acquisition of malignant growth properties in hPV16-immortalized cells, such as(1) calcium resistance,(2)anchorage independence, and(3) increased cell proliferation in vivo. Moreover, TNFα increased the cancer stem cell-like population and stemness phenotype in hPV16-immortalized cells. however, such transforming effects were not observed in h TERTimmortalized cells, suggesting an hPV-specific role in TNFα-promoted oncogenesis. We also generated h TERT-immortalized cells that express hPV16 E6 and E7. Chronic TNFα exposure successfully induced the malignant growth and stemness phenotype in the E6-expressing cells but not in the control and E7-expressing cells. We further demonstrated that hPV16 E6 played a key role in TNFα-induced cancer stemness via suppression of the stemness-inhibiting micro RNAs mi R-203 and mi R-200 c. Overexpression of mi R-203 and mi R-200 c suppressed cancer stemness in TNFα-treated hPV16-immortalized cells. Overall, our study suggests that chronic inflammation promotes cancer stemness in hPV-infected cells, thereby promoting hPV-associated oral carcinogenesis.

O_(2)-generating multifunctional polymeric micelles for highly efficient and selective photodynamic-photothermal therapy in melanoma

Impact of chlorine exposure time on disinfection byproduct formation in the presence of iopamidol and natural organic matter during chloramination
