The Oronogo-Duenweg mining belt is a designated United States Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site due to lead-contaminated soil and groundwater by former mining and smelting *** that have undergone remediation-in which the O,A,and B horizons have been removed alongside the lead contamination-have an exposed c horizon and are incalcitrant to revegetation *** also continue to contain quantifiable cd and Zn *** improve soil conditions and encourage successful site revegetation,our study employed three biochars,sourced from different feedstocks(poultry litter,beef cattle manure,and lodgepole pine),at two rates of application(2.5%,and 5%),coupled with compost(0%,2.5%and 5%application rates).Two plant species-switchgrass(Panicum virgatum)and buffalograss(Bouteloua dactyloides)-were grown in the amended *** of soils with poultry litter biochar applied at 5%resulted in the greatest reduction of soil bioavailable cd and ***-ground biomass yields were greatest with beef cattle manure biochar applied at 2.5%with 5%compost,or with 5%biochar at 2.5%and 5%compost *** microbial biomass was achieved with 5%poultry litter biochar and 5%compost,and microbial communities in soils amended with poultry litter biochar distinctly clustered away from all other soil ***,poultry litter biochar amended soils had the highest enzyme activity rates forβ-glucosidase,N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase,and *** results suggest that soil reclamation using biochar and compost can improve mine-impacted soil biogeophysical characteristics,and potentially improve future remediation efforts.

The shoulder complex presents unique challenges for measuring motion as the scapula,unlike any other bony segment in the body,glides and rotates underneath layers of soft tissue and *** ability for clinicians and researchers to collect meaningful kinematic data is dependent on the reliability and validity of the instrumentation *** aim of this study was to review the relevant literature pertaining to the reliability and validity of electromagnetic tracking systems(ETS) and digital inclinometers for assessing shoulder complex *** in technology have led to the development of biomechanical instrumentation,like ETS,that allow for the collection of threedimensional kinematic *** existing evidence has demonstrated that ETS are reliable and valid instruments for collecting static and dynamic kinematic data of the shoulder ***,digital inclinometers have become increasingly popular among clinicians due to their cost effectiveness and practical use in the clinical *** existing evidence supports the use of digital inclinometers for the collection of shoulder complex kinematics as these instruments have been demonstrated to yield acceptable reliability and *** digital inclinometers pose a disadvantage to ETS regarding accuracy,precision,and are limited to twodimensional and static measurements,this instrument provides clinically meaningful data that allow clinicians and researchers the ability to measure,monitor,and compare shoulder complex kinematics.

crosslinking of viral nanoparticles with “clickable” fluorescent crosslinkers at the interface

cu (I) catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (cuAAc) reaction,a typical "click" reaction,is one of the modular synthetic approaches which has been broadly used in various organic syntheses,medicinal chemistry,materials development and bioconjugation *** have for the first time synthesized two dialkyne derivatized fluorescent crosslinkers which could be applied to crosslink two biomolecules using cuAAc *** yellow mosaic virus,a plant virus with unique structural and chemical properties,was used as a prototypical scaffold to form a 2D single layer at the interface of two immiscible liquids and crosslinked with these two linkers by the cuAAc *** crosslinking,the fluorescence of both linkers diminished,likely due to the distortion of the polymethylene backbone,which therefore could be used to indicate the completion of the reaction.

A general spatial-temporal framework for short-term building temperature forecasting at arbitrary locations with crowdsourcing weather data

Weather forecasting has been a critical component to predict and control building energy consumption for better building energy *** accessibility to other data sources,the onsite observed temperatures or the airport temperatures are used in forecast *** this paper,we present a novel approach by utilizing the crowdsourcing weather data from neighboring personal weather stations(PWS)to improve the weather forecast accuracy around buildings using a general spatial-temporal modeling *** final forecast is based on the ensemble of local forecasts for the target location using neighboring *** approach is distinguished from existing literature in various ***,we leverage the crowdsourcing weather data from PWS in addition to public data *** this way,the data is at much finer time resolution(e.g.,at 5-minute frequency)and spatial resolution(e.g.,arbitrary location vs grid).Second,our proposed model incorporates spatial-temporal correlation information of weather variables between the target building and a set of neighboring PWSs so that underlying correlations can be effectively captured to improve forecasting *** demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework by comparing to the benchmark models on temperature forecasting for a building located at an arbitrary location at San Antonio,Texas,*** general,the proposed model framework equipped with machine learning technique such as Random Forest can improve forecasting by 50%compares with persistent model and has 90%chance to outperform airport forecast in short-term *** a real-time setting,the proposed model framework can provide more accurate temperature forecasting results compared with using airport temperature forecast for most forecast ***,we analyze the sensitivity of model parameters to gain insights on how crowdsourcing data from the neighboring personal weather stations impacts forecasting ***,we implement

Fetal growth restriction(FGR)is one of the most common contributors to increased risk of mortality in the fetal/neonatal period and long-term morbidity in the infant(Malhotra et al.,2019).FGR can arise from many pathophysiological processes associated with maternal,fetal,genetic,or placental compromise;however,placental insufficiency is the most common cause of *** insufficiency during pregnancy results in chronic fetal hypoxia where a lack of oxygen and nutrients supply to the developing fetus impacts normal development of the fetus.

Why forefoot striking in minimal shoes might positively change the course of running injuries

It is believed that human ancestors evolved the ability to run bipedally approximately 2 million years ago. This form of locomotion may have been important to our survival and likely has influenced the evolution of our body form. As our bodies have adapted to run, it seems unusual that up to 79% of modern day runners are injured annually. The etiology of these injuries is clearly multifactorial. However, 1 aspect of running that has significantly changed over the past 50 years is the footwear we use. Modern running shoes have become increasingly cushioned and supportive, and have changed the way we run. In particular, they have altered our footstrike pattern from a predominantly forefoot strike(FFS) landing to a predominantly rearfoot strike(RFS) landing. This change alters the way in which the body is loaded and may be contributing to the high rate of injuries runners experience while engaged in an activity for which they were adapted. In this paper, we will examine the benefits of barefoot running(typically an FFS pattern),and compare the lower extremity mechanics between FFS and RFS. The implications of these mechanical differences, in terms of injury, will be discussed. We will then provide evidence to support our contention that FFS provides an optimal mechanical environment for specific foot and ankle structures, such as the heel pad, the plantar fascia, and the Achilles tendon. The importance of footwear will then be addressed, highlighting its interaction with strike pattern on mechanics. This analysis will underscore why footwear matters when assessing mechanics. Finally, proper preparation and safe transition to an FFS pattern in minimal shoes will be emphasized. Through the discussion of the current literature, we will develop a justification for returning to running in the way for which we were adapted to reduce running-related injuries.

Sensitivity analysis for stochastic and deterministic models of nascent focal adhesion dynamics

Sensitivity analysis （SA） is a critical part of modeling any biological system due to the inherent uncertainty in model output, as introduced by parameter values that have not been experimentally determined. SA therefore provides deeper understanding of the system by painting a picture of the extent to which certain model outputs vary in rela- tionship to changes in model parameters. Here we explore two types of global SA for recently developed models of nascent focal adhesion formation, a key step in cellular movement. While many SA methods have been used for deterministic methods, we uti- lize methods for both stochastic and deterministic models, providing a more complete description of the parameters to which the focal adhesion model is most sensitive. Spe- cific recommendations for further experimentation in the process of cellular motility are proposed in response to the SA.

cullin 4A(cUL4A)is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that directly affects DNA repair and cell cycle progression by targeting substrates including damage-specific DNA-binding protein 2(DDB2),xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group c(XPc),chromatin licensing and DNA replication factor 1(cdt1),and *** work from our laboratory has shown that cul4a-deficient mice have greatly reduced rates of ultraviolet-induced skin *** a cellular level,cul4a-deficient cells have great capacity for DNA repair and demonstrate a slow rate of proliferation due primarily to increased expression of DDB2 and p21,*** suggests that cUL4A promotes tumorigenesis(as well as accumulation of skin damage and subsequent premature aging)by limiting DNA repair activity and expediting S phase *** addition,cUL4A has been found to be up-regulated via gene amplification or overexpression in breast cancers,hepatocellular carcinomas,squamous cell carcinomas,adrenocortical carcinomas,childhood medulloblastomas,and malignant pleural *** of its oncogenic activity in skin cancer and up-regulation in other malignancies,cUL4A has arisen as a potential candidate for targeted therapeutic *** this review,we outline the established functions of cUL4A and discuss the E3ligase’s emergence as a potential driver of tumorigenesis.

Bile acid signaling and biliary functions

This review focuses on various components of bile acid signaling in relation to cholangiocytes. Their roles as targets for potential therapies for cholangiopathies are also explored. While many factors are involved in these complex signaling pathways, this review emphasizes the roles of transmembrane G protein coupled receptor(TGR5), farnesoid X receptor(FXR), ursodeoxycholic acid(UDcA) and the bicarbonate umbrella. Following a general background on cholangiocytes and bile acids,we will expand the review and include sections that are most recently known(within 5–7 years) regarding the field of bile acid signaling and cholangiocyte function. These findings all demonstrate that bile acids influence biliary functions which can, in turn, regulate the cholangiocyte response during pathological events.
