Multiscale tensegrity model for the tensile properties of DNA nanotubes

DNA nanotubes(DNTs)with user-defined shapes and functionalities have potential applications in many fields.So far,compared with numerous experimental studies,there have been only a handful of models on the mechanical properties of such DNTs.This paper aims at presenting a multiscale model to quantify the correlations among the pre-tension states,tensile properties,encapsulation structures of DNTs,and the surrounding factors.First,by combining a statistical worm-like-chain(WLC)model of single DNA deformation and Parsegian's mesoscopic model of DNA liquid crystal free energy,a multiscale tensegrity model is established,and the pre-tension state of DNTs is characterized theoretically for the first time.Then,by using the minimum potential energy principle,the force-extension curve and tensile rigidity of pre-tension DNTs are predicted.Finally,the effects of the encapsulation structure and surrounding factors on the tensile properties of DNTs are studied.The predictions for the tensile behaviors of DNTs can not only reproduce the existing experimental results,but also reveal that the competition of DNA intrachain and interchain interactions in the encapsulation structures determines the pre-tension states of DNTs and their tensile properties.The changes in the pre-tension states and environmental factors make the monotonic or non-monotonic changes in the tensile properties of DNTs under longitudinal loads.

Thickness dependence of viscoelastic stress relaxation of laminated microbeams due to mismatch strain

Time-dependent behaviors due to various mismatch strains are very important to the reliability of micro-/nano-devices.This paper aims at presenting an analytical model to study the viscoelastic stress relaxation of the laminated microbeam caused by mismatch strain.Firstly,Zhang’s two-variable method is used to establish a mechanical model for predicting the quasi-static stress relaxation of the laminated microbeam.Secondly,the related analytical solutions are obtained by combining the differential method and the eigenvalue method in the temporal domain.Finally,the influence of the substrateto-film thickness/modulus ratio on the relaxation responses of the laminated microbeam subject to a step load of the mismatch strain is studied.The results show that the present predictions are consistent with the previous theoretical studies.Furthermore,the thickness dependence of stress relaxation time of the laminated microbeam is jointly determined by the intrinsic structural evolution factors and tension-bending coupling state;the stress relaxation time can be controlled by adjusting the substrate-to-film thickness/modulus ratio.

Piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects of DNA adsorbed films on microcantilevers

DNA-based biosensors have played a huge role in many areas,especially in current global coronavirus outbreak.However,there is a great difficulty in the characterization of piezoelectric and flexoelectric coefficients of the nanoscale DNA film,because the existing experimental methods for hard materials are almost invalid.In addition,the relevant theoretical models for DNA films only consider a single effect without clarifying the difference between the two electromechanical effects on device detection signals.This work aims to present multiscale models for DNA-microcantilever experiments to clarify the competitive mechanism in piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects of DNA films on detection signals.First,a Poisson-Boltzmann(PB)equation is used to predict the potential distribution due to the competition between fixed phosphate groups and mobile salt ions in DNA films.Second,a macroscopic piezoelectric/flexoelectric constitutive equation of the DNA film and a mesoscopic free energy model of the DNA solution are combined to analytically predict the electromechanical coefficients of the DNA film and the relevant microcantilever signals by the deformation equivalent method and Zhang’s two-variable method.Finally,the effects of detection conditions on microscopic interactions,electromechanical coupling coefficients,and deflection signals are studied.Numerical results not only agree well with the experimental observations,but also reveal that the piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects of the DNA film should be equivalently modeled when interpreting microcantilever detection signals.These insights might provide opportunities for the microcantilever biosensor with high sensitivity.

Optimization of Electricity Purchase and Sales Strategies of Electricity Retailers under the Condition of Limited Clean Energy Consumption

In the process of my country’s energy transition,the clean energy of hydropower,wind power and photovoltaic power generation has ushered in great development,but due to the randomness and volatility of its output,it has caused a certain waste of clean energy power generation resources.Regarding the purchase and sale of electricity by electricity retailers under the condition of limited clean energy consumption,this paper establishes a quantitative model of clean energy restricted electricity fromthe perspective of power system supply and demand balance.Then it analyzes the source-charge dual uncertain factors in the electricity retailer purchasing and selling scenarios in the mid-to long-term electricity market and the day-ahead market.Through the multi-scenario analysis method,the uncertain clean energy consumption and the user’s power demand are combined to form the electricity retailer’s electricity purchase and sales scene,and the typical scene is obtained by using the hierarchical clustering algorithm.This paper establishes a electricity retailer’s risk decisionmodel for purchasing and selling electricity in themid-and long-term market and reduce-abandonment market,and takes the maximum profit expectation of the electricity retailer frompurchasing and selling electricity as the objective function.At the same time,in themediumand longterm electricity market and the day-ahead market,the electricity retailer’s purchase cost,electricity sales income,deviation assessment cost and electricity purchase and sale risk are considered.The molecular results show that electricity retailers can obtain considerable profits in the reduce-abandonment market by optimizing their own electricity purchase and sales strategies,on the premise of balancing profits and risks.

Effect of hot isostatic pressure on the microstructure and tensile properties of γ'-strengthened superalloy fabricated through induction-assisted directed energy deposition

The microstructure characteristics and strengthening mechanism of Inconel738LC(IN-738LC) alloy prepared by using induction-assisted directed energy deposition(IDED) were elucidated through the investigation of samples subjected to IDED under 1050℃ preheating with and without hot isostatic pressing(HIP,1190℃,105 MPa,and 3 h).Results show that the as-deposited sample mainly consisted of epitaxial columnar crystals and inhomogeneously distributed γ’ phases in interdendritic and dendritic core regions.After HIP,grain morphology changed negligibly,whereas the size of the γ’ phase became increasingly even.After further heat treatment(HT,1070℃,2 h + 845℃,24 h),the γ’ phase in the as-deposited and HIPed samples presented a bimodal size distribution,whereas that in the as-deposited sample showed a size that remained uneven.The comparison of tensile properties revealed that the tensile strength and uniform elongation of the HIP + HTed sample increased by 5% and 46%,respectively,due to the synergistic deformation of bimodal γ’phases,especially large cubic γ’ phases.Finally,the relationship between phase transformations and plastic deformations in the IDEDed sample was discussed on the basis of generalized stability theory in terms of the trade-off between thermodynamics and kinetics.

Swine are regarded as“intermediate hosts”or“mixing vessels”of influenza viruses,capable of generating strains with pandemic potential.From 2020 to 2021,we conducted surveillance on swine H1N2 influenza(swH1N2)viruses in swine farms located in Guangdong,Yunnan,and Guizhou provinces in southern China,as well as Henan and Shandong provinces in northern China.We systematically analyzed the evolution and pathogenicity of swH1N2 isolates,and characterized their replication and transmission abilities.The isolated viruses are quadruple reassortant H1N2 viruses containing genes from pdm/09 H1N1(PB2,PB1,PA and NP genes),triple-reassortant swine(NS gene),Eurasian Avian-like(HA and M genes),and recent human H3N2(NA gene)lineages.The NA,PB2,and NP of SW/188/20 and SW/198/20 show high gene similarities to A/Guangdong/Yue Fang277/2017(H3N2).The HA gene of swH1N2 exhibits a high evolutionary rate.The five swH1N2 isolates replicate efficiently in human,canine,and swine cells,as well as in the turbinate,trachea,and lungs of mice.A/swine/Shandong/198/2020 strain efficiently replicates in the respiratory tract of pigs and effectively transmitted among them.Collectively,these current swH1N2 viruses possess zoonotic potential,highlighting the need for strengthened surveillance of swH1N2 viruses.

Theoretical investigations on heat transfer to H2O/CO2 mixtures in supercritical region

The supercritical H2O/CO2 mixture is the working fluid to drive a turbine in a novel power generation system with coal gasified in supercritical water.This system is promising because of zero pollution emission in contrast to the conventional coal-fired power plant.Heat transfer coefficients of the supercritical H2O/CO2 mixtures are important to design heat transfer devices in this system,which is similar to the role of heat transfer to supercritical water in conventional systems.However,heat transfer to supercritical mixtures has received less attention.Here,we show that the supercritical mixtures with H2O being one of the components,have similar convection heat transfer behavior to supercritical pure fluids for temperatures and pressures above the critical point of H2O.This phenomenon was demonstrated from two aspects.Firstly,the forced convection heat transfer coefficients of supercritical mixtures were numerically calculated using the simulation model for supercritical pure fluids and using the thermophysical properties(density,heat capacity,thermal conductivity and viscosity)of supercritical mixtures as input.The calculated results agree well with experimental data in the supercritical region.Secondly,the calculated results also agree well with the correlations for supercritical pure fluids.The mechanisms were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations on the diffusion of supercritical mixtures.These results lay the foundation for predicting convection heat transfer coefficients of supercritical mixtures and for designing heat transfer devices with supercritical mixtures as heat transfer fluids.

Porcine intestinal antimicrobial peptide as an in-feed antibiotic alternative improves intestinal digestion and immunity by shaping the gut microbiota in weaned piglets

Antibiotic resistance of pathogens,which is caused by the abuse of in-feed antibiotics,threatens the sustainable development of livestock production.The present study aimed to investigate the efficiency of porcine intestinal antimicrobial peptide(PIAP)as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics in terms of growth performance,intestinal morphology,digestive enzymes and immunity,and microbiota community of the post-weaning piglets.A total of 204 piglets(Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire,weaned at 28 d age)with a similar body weight of 7.97±1.04 kg were randomly allocated to 4 groups(51 piglets per group):(1)control group:basal diet;(2)AB group:antibiotic,basal diet+chlortetracycline(1000 mg/kg from d 1 to24;500 mg/kg from d 25 to 37);(3)P1 group:basal diet+a relatively low dose of PIAP(400 mg/kg from d 1 to 24;300 mg/kg from d 25 to 37);(4)P2 group,basal diet+a relatively high dose of PIAP(600 mg/kg from d 1 to 24;500 mg/kg from d 25 to 37).The results showed that serum indicators of hepatocyte damage and relative organ weight were not affected by these treatments(P>0.05).Compared with the AB treatment,the P1 treatment remarkably decreased jejunal crypt depth and increased jejunal and ileal villus height:crypt depth ratio(P<0.05).The values of jejunal maltase,lactase,sucrase,intestinal alkaline phosphatase,and secretory immunoglobulin A(SIg A)in the P1 group were sharply increased compared with those in the control and P2 groups(P<0.05).Compared with the control group,the P1 group decreased serum concentrations of D-lactate,diamine oxidase,and endotoxin(P<0.05),and increased the abundance of Lactobacillus reuteri(P<0.05)in the colonic feces.Furthermore,there was a positive correlation between the abundance of L.reuteri and the concentrations of maltase,lactase,sucrase,and SIg A(P<0.05).Collectively,dietary supplementation with a relatively low dose of PIAP(400 mg/kg from d 1 to 24;300 mg/kg from d 25 to 37)demonstrates beneficial effects on intestinal morphology,digestive enzymes,immunity,and permeability by shaping the gut mi

Gathering brings strength:How organic aggregates boost disease phototheranostics

Phototheranostics that concurrently and complementarily integrate real-time diagnosis and in situ therapeutic capabilities in one platform has become the advancing edge of precision medicine.Organic agents possess the merits of facile preparation,high purity,tunable photophysical property,good biocompatibility,and potential biodegradability,which have shown great promise for disease theranostics.This review summarizes the recent achievements of organic phototheranostic agents and applications,especially which rationally utilize energy dissipation pathways of Jablonski diagram to modulate the fluorescence emission,photoacoustic/photothermal production,and photodynamic processes.Of particular interest are the systems exhibiting huge differences in aggregate state as compared with the solution or single molecule form,during which the intramolecular motions play an important role in regulating the photophysical properties.The recent advances from such an aspect for biomedical applications including high-resolution imaging,activatable imaging and therapy,adaptive theranostics,image-guided surgery,immunotherapy,and afterglow imaging are discussed.A brief summary and perspective in this field are also presented.We hope this review will be helpful to the researchers interested in bioprobe design and theranostic applications,and inspire new insights into the linkage between aggregate science and biomedical field.

The angular characteristics of Moon-based Earth observations

The Moon,Earth’s only natural satellite,is a potential new platform for Earth observation.Moreover,with the wide applicability of the angular information from remote sensing data,it has been attracting increasingly more attention.Accordingly,this study focuses on the angular characteristics of Moon-based Earth observations.Using ephemeris DE430 and Earth orientation parameters,the position and attitude of the Sun,Earth,and Moon were obtained and their coordinates normalized to a single framework using coordinate transformations between the related reference systems.Then,an angular geometric model of Moon-based Earth observations was constructed,and the corresponding angular algorithms were presented.The results revealed the angular range and distribution characteristics of Moon-based Earth observations.For every point on the surface of the Earth,the view and solar zenith angles all vary widely,which decreases with increasing latitude.The view and solar zenith angles all vary widely with the largest range of values in the equatorial and polar regions and a smaller range of values in mid-latitudes.Furthermore,the range of solar angles of Moon-based Earth observations is the same as that of alltime solar angles,indicating the potential for monitoring and understanding large-scale geoscientific phenomena using Moon-based Earth observations.
