The Prognostic Value of Minimally Involved Melanoma Sentinel Lymph Nodes

Background: Sentinel node (SLN) status is the most important prognostic factor for early-stage melanoma patients. It will influence follow-up and may change therapy. Positive SLNs present different degrees of involvement so that subgroups of patients may have minimal SLN invasion. The aim of this study was to evaluate survival in subgroups with minimally involved SLNs and to compare them to negative SLN patients. Method: SLN biopsy was performed in 499 consecutive clinically N0 patients between 1997 and 2008. Following updated recommendations from the Melanoma Group of the European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer, degrees of SLN involvement were fully reassessed for two anatomopathological parameters: tumour burden according to Rotterdam criteria (1.0 mm) and microanatomic location according to Dewar (subcapsular, combined subcapsular and parenchymal, parenchymal, multifocal, or extensive). Minimally involved SLNs were defined as those with tumor burden <0.1 mm and/or subcapsular metastasis location. Kaplan-Meier and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: Out of 499 clinically N0 patients, positive SLNs were found in 123 patients (24.7 percent). With a median follow-up of 52 months (range: 9 - 146), five-year disease-free (DFS), disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS) were 88.1, 93.9 and 89.9 percent for negative SLN patients, respectively. In minimally involved SLNs, there were 21 with tumour burden <0.1 mm, and 52 with subcapsular metastasis. Five-year DFS, DSS and OS in these sub-groups were 79.6, 86.6 and 86.6 percent, then 57.3, 69.8 and 67.8 percent respectively. DFS univariable analysis of these sub-groups compared to negative SLNs showed: (HR1.89, 95 percent CI 0.75 - 4.79;p 0.175) and (HR 3.92, 95 percent CI 2.29 - 6.71;p < 0.0001) respectively. The present work emphasizes the isolation of cellulose nanofiber(CNF)from the kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus)bast through a chemo-mechanical *** order to develop high CNF yield with superior properties of CNF for improving compatibility in varied applications this method is *** fiber purification involved pulping and bleaching treatments,whereas mechanical treatment was performed by grinding and high-pressure *** kraft pulping as a delignification method followed by bleaching has successfully removed almost 99%lignin in the fiber with high pulp yield and delignification *** morphology of the fibers was characterized by scanning electron microscopy,which showed a smooth surface,fiber bundles,gel-shaped nanofiber,and an average size of 94.05 nm with 69%of CNF in 34–100 nm *** chemo-mechanical process exhibited a more crystalline nature in CNF than pulp *** low zeta potential values exhibit the distribution of fibrils and colloidal suspension stability without any further agglomeration.A lower concentration of CNF is less stable exhibiting the product ***,the chemo-mechanical process for the isolation of CNF(Hibiscus cannabinus)from kenaf involves sustainable,low-cost,non-toxic,and cheap alternatives than other traditional methods.

Purification of Produced Water from a Sour Oilfield in South Kuwait. 2. Oil-Water Separation and Crystallization of Calcium Carbonate

Oil-water separation for produced water (PW) originating from an oil extraction site in South Kuwait was carried out using bleached, esterified cellulosic material from used coffee grounds. Thereafter, earth-alkaline metal ions, specifically calcium ions, of the de-oiled PW were removed by precipitation with sodium carbonate to give access to pure sodium chloride as industrial salt from the remaining PW. While the purity of the precipitated calcium carbonate (CaCO3) depends on the precipitation conditions, CaCO3 of up to 95.48% purity can be obtained, which makes it a salable product. The precipitation of CaCO3 decreases the amount of calcium ions in PW from 11,300 ppm to 84 ppm.

Patterns of tree buttressing at Lawachara National Park, Bangladesh

We describe patterns of buttress formation and development in eleven tree species at Lawachara National Park, Bangladesh. Forty-five percent of trees of these 11 species had buttresses. Artocarpus chaplasha Roxb. showed maximum （87%） buttress formation, whereas Alstonia scholaris （L.） R. Br. did not show any buttress. Buttresses were recorded in 20%-40% of trees of six species and 40%-60% of trees in three species. Mean length and height of buttress varied among the species and ranged from 0.37-4.37 m and 0.71-2.13 m, respectively. Buttress height, mean buttress length, total buttress length, and total length plus length of secondaries increased with DBH （diameter at breast height） and tree height. Buttress number did not increase with DBH or tree height. Under-storey and mid-canopy trees produced less developed buttresses than did emergent trees （p〈0.01）. Wood density showed moderate effects on buttress characters （p〈0.05）, while the slope of the land did not. Canopy category was a primary regulating factor for tree buttressing, suggesting that buttresses are mechanical adaptations of trees to counter physical stresses.

Reactive oxygen species and senescence modulatory effects of rice bran extract on 4T1 and NIH-3T3 cells co-treatment with doxorubicin
