Background Although epilepsy has been acknowledged as an illness since ancient time,the public attitude toward epilepsy has not changed drastically due to the lack of appropriate *** study aims to determine the public perceptions of epilepsy in five main regions of Saudi *** In this cross-sectional questionnaire-based study,Saudi citizens living in the major cities of the five main regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia(the central,eastern,western,northern,and southern regions)completed the survey that included 27 questions about epilepsy *** A total of 7118 individuals from five regions participated in the survey:6749(94.8%)of respondents were Saudi,and 369(5.2%)were *** the 7118 respondents,6897 respondents(96.9%)did not have epilepsy,and 3378 respondents(47.5%)stated that they had never witnessed an epileptic *** addition,3749(52.7%)respondents incorrectly attributed epilepsy to non-neurologic conditions,and 4865(68.3%)respondents had an overall negative attitude toward people with epilepsy(PWE).They expressed objections to their child associating with PWE(2002;28.1%)or their close relatives marrying PWE(3192;44.8%),some believed that PWE are inferior(402;5.6%),refused to hire a PWE(1126;15.8%),and would feel discomfort around PWE(724;10.3%).In addition,2025 individuals(28.4%)believed that the health of PWE deteriorates over time;1485 individuals(20.9%)believed that PWE get sick more often than others;181 individuals(2.5%)believed that epilepsy could be transmitted;and 568 individuals(8.0%)believed that epilepsy could progress to malignant *** In Saudi Arabia,there is a substantial need for increasing the awareness and improving education on epilepsy in order to reduce stigma and increase the understanding of *** efforts could help improve the lives of people afflicted with the disease and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes for the entire community.

Experimental study of pollution effect on the behavior of high voltage insulators under alternative current

In this paper, the impact of the conductivity and the distribution of pollution on the behavior of the high voltage insulator cap and pin 1512L, artificially polluted is described. An experimental model in form of a disc is proposed. This experimental model reproduces the real model which is the 1512L insulator. Besides, a comparative study is presented. For this comparative study, different solutions are adopted to s`imulate the pollution (containing NaCl + distilled water) that has different conductivities for a discontinuous distribution of the pollution on the insulator under an AC voltage. Furthermore, the influence of the pollution on the flashover voltage and the leakage current is studied. Finally, the behavior of real and experimental model of the insulator is investigated.

Fabrication of Submicron-Diameter and Taper Fibers Using Chemical Etching

The thin, long length and high smoothness silica photonic nanowires and taper optical fiber were fabricated using a simple and low cost chemical etching method. A two-steps wet etch process were used consisting of etching with 30% HF acid to remove cladding and 24% HF acid to decrease fiber core diameter. An approach for on-line monitoring of etching using 1300 nm light power transmitted in the optical fiber was used to determine the diameter of the remaining core and showed a transition between two different operation regimes of nanofiber from the embedded regime, where the mode was isolated from the environment, to the evanescent regime. The data indicated that the diameter of the silica fiber decreased linearly for both 30% and 24% HF acid with 1.2 and 0.1/zm/min grad diameter, respectively at room temperature, and more than 70% of the mode intensity could propagate outside fiber when the core diameter was less than 1μm. The results of fiber taper showed that the fiber was tapered by a factor of 20 while retaining a thin core structure and leaving about more than 85% of core structure.

Geomechanical effects of stress shadow created by large-scale destress blasting

This study aims to determine if large-scale choked panel destress blasting can provide sufficient beneficial stress reduction in highly-stressed remnant ore pillar that is planned for production. The orebody is divided into 20 stopes over 2 levels, and 2 panels are choke-blasted in the hanging wall to shield the ore pillar by creating a stress shadow around it. A linear-elastic model of the mining system is constructed with finite difference code FLAC3 D. The effect of destress blasting in the panels is simulated by applying a fragmentation factor(α) to the rock mass stiffness and a stress reduction factor(β) to the current state of stress in the region occupied by the destress panels. As an extreme case, the destress panel is also modeled as a void to obtain the maximum possible beneficial effects of destressing and stress *** stopes are mined in the stress shadow of the panels in 6 lifts and then backfilled. The effect of destress blasting on the remnant ore pillar is quantified based on stress change and brittle shear ratio(BSR) in the stress shadow zone compared to the base case without destress blasting. To establish realistic rock fragmentation and stress reduction factors, model results are compared to measured stress changes reported for case studies at Fraser and Brunswick mines. A 1.5 mPa immediate stress decrease was observed 20 m away from the panel at Fraser mine, and a 4 mPa immediate stress decrease was observed 25 m away at Brunswick mine. Comparable results are obtained from the current model with a rock fragmentation factor α of 0.2 and a stress reduction factor α of 0.8. It is shown that a destress blasting with these parameters reduces the major principal stress in the nearest stopes by 10-25 *** yields an immediate reduction of BSR, which is deemed sufficient to reduce volume of ore at risk in the pillar.

Physio-biochemical and nutrient constituents of peanut plants under bentazone herbicide for broad-leaved weed control and water regimes in dry land areas

The abundance of broad-leaved weeds in peanut fields represents the handicap in weed management programs, since limited specific herbicides can be recommended to control them. moreover, the physio-biochemical constituents and nutritional status in peanut plants as affected by available herbicides, i.e., bentazone under water stress conditions are not well known. Therefore, field trials were conducted during the growing seasons in 2016 and 2017 to investigate the interactional impact of irrigation levels(I_(50), I_(75) and I_(100), representing irrigation by 50%, 75% and 100% of crop evapotranspiration, respectively) and weed control practices(bentazone, bentazone+hoeing once, hoeing twice and weedy check as control) on dominant broad-leaved weeds as well as peanut physiological and agronomic traits. Result indicated that the efficiency of weed control for each weeded treatment under I_(50) significantly equaled with its counterpart under I_(75) or I_(100). Bentazone+hoeing once diminished weed biomass by 89.3% and enhanced chlorophyll content of peanut plants by 51.2%. Bentazone relatively caused a reduction in carotenoides. Hoeing twice and bentazone+hoeing once under I_(100) in both growing seasons as well as hoeing twice under I_(75) in 2017 were the superior combinations for boosting pod yield of peanut plants. Treatment of bentazone+hoeing once and I_(75) recorded the lowest reduction in N utilization percentage and the highest increase in potassium utilization percentage of peanut plants. Eliminating weeds enhanced water use efficiency by 37.8%, 49.6% and 34.7% under I_(50), I_(75) and I_(100), respectively. In conclusion, peanut seems to be tolerant to bentazone at moderate water supply, thus it can be safely used in controlling the associated broad-leaved weeds.

Fractional excretion of sodium in hepatorenal syndrome:Clinical and pathological correlation

AImTo determine the accuracy of fractional excretion of sodium (FeNa) in the diagnosis of hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). mETHODSEighty-eight liver transplantation candidates with renal dysfunction and/or proteinuria were included in the study sample. The baseline characteristics of the patients were obtained. All the 88 patients underwent iothalamate glomerular filtration rate testing, 24-h urine collection for urinary sodium and protein excretions, random urine for sodium and creatinine testing, and percutaneous kidney biopsy. FeNa was calculated using the equation [(urine sodium × serum creatinine)/(serum sodium × urine creatinine)] × 100%. Diuretic use was recorded among the participants. Patients on renal replacement therapy were not included in the original sample. RESULTSSeventy-seven (87%) of the 88 patients had FeNa P = 0.4). FeNa P = 0.47). Calculated positive predictive value and negative predictive value for FeNa P = 0.41). CONCLUSIONFeNa 1%.

Large-scale destress blasting for seismicity control in hard rock mines:A case study

Destress blasting is a rockburst control technique where highly stressed rock is blasted to reduce the local stress and stiffness of the rock,thereby reducing its burst *** technique is commonly practiced in deep hard rock mines in burst prone developments,as well as in sill or crown pillars which become burst-prone as the orebody is ***-scale destressing is a variant of destress blasting where panels are created parallel to the orebody strike with a longhole,fanning blast pattern from cross cut drifts situated in the host *** aim of panel destressing is to reduce the stress concentration in the ore blocks or pillars to be *** paper focuses on the large-scale destress blasting program conducted at Vale's Copper Cliff mine(CCm)in Ontario,*** merits of panel destressing are examined through field measurements of mining induced stress changes in the *** destressing mechanism is simulated with a rock fragmentation factor(a)and stress reduction/dissipation factor(b).A 3D model is built and validated with measured induced stress *** is shown that the best correlation between the numerical model and field measurements is obtained when the combination of a and b indicates that the blast causes high fragmentation(a=0.05)and high stress release(b=0.95)in the destress *** is demonstrated that the burst proneness of the ore blocks in the panel stress shadow is reduced in terms of the brittle shear ratio(BSR)and the burst potential index(BPI).

Normothermic machine perfusion(NmP)is an innovative technique used in solid organ transplantation that involves perfusing the organ with specialized solution or leukocyte depleted red blood cells at near-normal body temperature aiming at mimicking physiological conditions,and providing optimal conditions for organ preservation which leads to reduced risk of ischemia reperfusion injury(IRI)when compared to the standard static cold storage(SCS)(1).One of the key advantages of NmP is its ability to assess the quality of the organ in real-time and assessment of the organ performance prior to *** continuously monitoring parameters such as blood flow,oxygen consumption,and lactate production,clinicians can evaluate the viability of the organ and make more informed decisions about its suitability for *** real-time assessment can help reduce the risk of transplanting organs that may not function optimally or have a higher likelihood of complications ***,NmP may expand the pool of donor organs by allowing for the use of organs that may have been deemed marginal or unsuitable for transplantation using traditional methods(1,2).
