Passive design responds to local clim.te and site conditions in order to m.xim.se the com.ort and health of building users while m.nim.sing energy use. The key to designing a passive building is to take best advantage of the local clim.te. Passive cooling refers to any technologies or design features adopted to reduce the tem.erature of buildings without the need for power consum.tion. Consequently, the aim.of this study is to test the usefulness of applying selected passive cooling strategies to im.rove therm.l perform.nce and to reduce energy consum.tion of residential buildings in hot arid clim.te settings, nam.ly Dubai, United Arab Em.rates. One case building was selected and eight passive cooling strategies were applied. Energy sim.lation software nam.ly IES was used to assess the perform.nce of the building. Solar shading perform.nce was also assessed using Sun Cast Analysis, as a part of the IES software. Energy reduction was achieved due to both the harnessing of natural ventilation and the m.nim.sing of heat gain in line with applying good shading devices alongside the use of double glazing. Additionally, green roofing proved its potential by acting as an effective roof insulation. The study revealed several significant findings including that the total annual energy consum.tion of a residential building in Dubai m.y be reduced by up to 23.6% when a building uses passive cooling strategies.

Com.lexes of La （III）, Nd（III）, Gd（III）, Sm.III）, and Ce（IV） were synthesized with Schiff base [（3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hy- droxybenzyl） am.no] acetic acid （H3L）. The ligand and its com.lexes were synthesized and characterized based on the following analysis： elem.ntal analyses, FAB-m.ss, m.lar conductance m.asurem.nts, m.gnetic m.asurem.nt, UV-visible, IR, and Nm. spectral studies. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acted as a neutral tridentate coordinating to m.tal ion through ONO donor sequence. Therm.l degradation studies of the ligand and its com.lexes showed that the previous lanthanide com.lexes were m.re therm.lly stable than the ligand itself. The Schiff base and its com.lexes were screened for their antibacterial （Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus） and antifungal （Aspergillus flavus and Candida Albicans）.

Cells have evolved DNA dam.ge response （DDR） to repair DNA lesions and thus preserving genom.c stability and im.eding carcinogenesis. DNA dam.ge induction is accom.anied by transient transcription repression. Here, we describe a previously unrecognized role of chrom.dom.in Y-like （CDYL1） protein in fortifying double-strand break （DSB）-induced transcription repression and repair. We showed that CDYL1 is rapidly recruited to dam.ged euchrom.tic regions in a poly （ADP-ribose） polym.rase 1 （PARP1）-dependent, but ataxia telangiectasia m.tated （ATm.-independent, m.nner. While the C-term.nal region, containing the enoyl-CoA hydratase like （ECH） dom.in, of CDYL1 binds to poly （ADP-ribose）（PAR） m.ieties and m.diates CDYL1 accum.lation at DNA dam.ge sites, the chrom.dom.in and histone H3 trim.thylated on lysine 9 （H3K9m.3） m.rk are dispensable for its recruitm.nt. Furtherm.re, CDYL1 prom.tes the recruitm.nt of enhancer of zeste hom.log 2 （EZH2）, stim.lates local increase of the repressive m.thyl m.rk H3K27m.3, and prom.tes transcription silencing at DSB sites. In addition, following DNA dam.ge induction, CDYL1 depletion causes persistent G2/m.arrest and alters H2AX and replication protein A （RPA2） phosphorylation. Rem.rkably, the ‘traffic-light reporter’ system.revealed that CDYL1 m.inly prom.tes hom.logy-directed repair （HDR） of DSBs in vivo. Consequently, CDYL1-knockout cells display synthetic lethality with the chem.therapeutic agent, cisplatin. Altogether, our findings identify CDYL1 as a new com.onent of the DDR and suggest that the HDR-defective ‘BRCAness’ phenotype of CDYL1-deficient cells could be exploited for eradicating cancer cells harboring CDYL1 m.tations.

The m.ss attenuation coefficients (l/q) of a natural m.terial, i.e., olive peat, were m.asured at photon energies of 0.059, 0.356, 0.662, 1.17, and 1.332 m.V and com.ared with those of concrete and Pb. The experim.ntal sam.les were irradiated with 214Am. 133Ba, 137Cs, and 60Co point sources using a transm.ssion arrangem.nt. The olive peat sam.les were obtained from.different areas in Jordan, nam.ly m.fraq (sam.le m., Kerak (sam.le K), Ajloun (sam.le A), and Irbid (sam.le I), and photon energies were m.asured using a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector with an energy resolution of 7.6% at 662 keV. The differences in the l/q of olive peat sam.les and the calculated l/q of concrete were consistently within 0.7% at photon energies of 0.356–1.332 m.V. This finding indicates that olive peat can be used in radiation applications in the field of m.dical physics. Finally, the half-value layer (HVL) of the experim.ntal sam.les was m.asured, and results were com.ared with those of concrete and Pb. Pb and concrete exhibited m.nim.l HVL values due to their high density, and the HVL of olive peat revealed lower shielding effectiveness than that of concrete.
