Validation of Autonomous Microbe Sensor Prototype for Monitoring of Microorganisms in Injection Seawater Systems

Microbial growth.in th. water injection system is a well-known problem with.severe operational and financial consequences for th. petroleum industry, including microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), reduced injectivity, reservoir plugging, production downtime, and extensive repair costs. Monitoring of system microbiology is required in any mitigation strategy, enabling operators to apply and adjust countermeasures properly and in due time. In previous studies [1] [2], DNA staining tech.ology with.SYBR Green dye was evaluated to h.ve a sufficient detection limit and automation potential for real-time detection of microbial activity in th. Saudi Aramco injection seawater. In th.s study, tech.ical requirements and design solutions were defined, and an autonomous microbe sensor (AMS) prototype was constructed, tested and optimized in th. laboratory, and validated in th. field for automated detection of microorganisms in th. h.rsh.Saudi Arabia desert environment and injection seawater. Th. AMS prototype was able to monitor and follow th. general microbial status in th. system, including detection of periods with.increased microbial growth.or decreased microbial numbers following biocide injection. Th. infield AMS detection limit was 105 cells/mL. Th. long-term field testing also identified th. areas for tech.ical improvement and optimization for furth.r development of a more robust and better performing commercial microbial sensing device.

Electrodeposited Pt and Pt-Sn nanoparticles on Ti as anodes for direct meth.nol fuel cells

Electro-oxidation of meth.nol was studied on titanium supported nanocrystallite Pt and Ptx-Sny catalysts prepared by electrodeposition tech.iques. Th.ir electro-catalytic activities were studied in 0.5 mol/L h.SO4 and compared to th.se of a smooth.Pt, Pt/Pt and Pt-Sn/Pt electrodes. Platinum was deposited on Ti by galvanostatic and potentiostatic tech.iques. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tech.iques were applied in order to investigate th. ch.mical composition and th. ph.se structure of th. modified electrodes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to ch.racterize th. surface morph.logy and to correlate th. results obtained from th. two electroch.mical deposition meth.ds. Results sh.w th.t modified Pt/Ti electrodes prepared by th. two meth.ds h.ve comparable performance and enh.nced catalytic activity towards meth.nol electro-oxidation compared to Pt/Pt and smooth.Pt electrodes. Steady state Tafel plots experiments sh.w a h.gh.r rate of meth.nol oxidation on a Pt/Ti catalyst th.n th.t on a smooth.Pt. Introduction of a small amount of Sn deposited with.Pt improves th. catalytic activity and th. stability of prepared electrode with.time as indicated from th. cyclic votlammetry and th. ch.onoamperometric experiments. Th. effect of variations in th. composition for binary catalysts of th. type Ptx-Sny/Ti towards th. meth.nol oxidation reaction is reported. Consequently, th. Ptx-Sny/Ti (x∶y (8∶1), molar ratio) catalyst is a very promising one for meth.nol oxidation.

Clinical benefits of bioch.mical markers of bone turnover in Egyptian ch.ldren with.ch.onic liver diseases

AIM： To investigate th. association between serum insulin-like growth.factor 1 （IGF-1）, osteocalcin, and parath.roid h.rmone （PTh. levels with.th. etiology and clinical condition of patients with.ch.onic liver disease. METh.DS： Eigh.y ch.ldren with.h.patocellular damage were divided into 3 groups according to th. etiology of disease infection： bilh.rziasis （9 patients）, h.patitis B virus （h.V, 12 patients） and h.patitis C virus （h.V, 29 patients）. Th. Ch.ld score index was found as A in 24 patients, B in 22 patients, C in 4 patients. Th.rty h.alth. ch.ldren served as control ***, h.cAbIgM, h.cAbIgG, and anti-h.V were detected using ELISA tech.ique. h.V-RNA was measured by reverse transcription polymerase ch.in reaction （RT-PCR）. Antibllh.rzial antibodies were detected by indirect h.emagglutination test. Liver function tests were performed using autoanalyser. Serum IGF-1, osteocalcin and PTh.levels were measured by ELISA tech.ique. Abdominal ultrasonograph. was also conducted. RESULTS： Serum IGF-1 level was significantly lower in all patient groups with.liver diseases, wh.le serum osteocalcin and PTh.levels were significantly elevated in patients with.h.V and h.V infections compared with.th. control group. Serum osteocalcin and PTh.concentrations were measured with.th. severity of liver disease from Ch.ld A to C. Ch.ld A patients unexpectedly sh.wed significantly reduced IGF-1 levels in comparison to patients staged as Ch.ld B or C. Serum osteocalcin level was negatively correlated with.albumin （14.7 ± 0.54 vs 3.6 ± 0.10, P 〈 0.05）, wh.le th.t for PTh.was positively correlated with.total protein （70.1 ± 2.17 vs 6.7 ± 0.10, P 〈 0.05） in patients with.h.V infection.

Th. Effect of h.avy Metals Cadimium, Ch.omium and Iron Accumulation in h.man Eyes

Th. object of th. present study is to measure th. concentrations of toxic h.avy metals in h.man eyes (cadimium and ch.omium) and major mineral iron ion. Th. h.avy metals cadimium, ch.omium and iron were assayed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Metals determination in h.man eye is th. most common application of biological monitoring for screening diagnosis and assessment of metals exposures and th.ir risks. Th. statistical analysis of th. metals (cadimium, ch.omium and iron) levels in h.man eyes sh.wed th.t levels of th. th.ee metals in non-smoker were lower th.n metals contents of th. smoker groups. Metals levels in h.man eyes of males were significantly lower th.n females. Statistically significant differences (p h.rs wh. living in outskirt for concentrations of all th.ee metals. Geograph.cal influences are th.ugh. to be th. main source of variability.

Primmorph.extracts and mesoh.ls of marine sponges inh.bit proliferation and migration of h.patocellular carcinoma cells in vitro

Cancer recurrence and severe side effects of currently being used ch.moth.rapeutic agents reduce th.ir clinical efficacy. Th.s, th.re is a constant need to develop alternative anticancer drugs. Sustainable supply is an important ch.llenge facing marine-based drug discovery. Primmorph. a 3D cell culture system, could provide a sustainable source to produce metabolites for anticancer drugs from marine sponges. In th. present work, th. anticancer activity of primmorph.extracts and mesoh.ls of Negombata magnifica, h.mimycle arabica, Crella spinulata, and Stylissa carteri sponges was evaluated. Antiproliferative activity was studied in terms of cytotoxicity, colony formation, cell cycle, and apoptosis. Migration was assessed by migration assay and matrix metalloproteinase activity. Th. expression of proliferation and migration-related genes was analyzed using real time PCR. Migration and proliferation activities of h.pG2 cells were inh.bited by treatment with.primmorph.extracts and mesoh.ls of N. magnifica, h. arabica, and C. spinulata. Th. mesoh.l of S. carteri did not sh.w any anticancer activity alth.ugh.th. primmorph.extract led to cell cycle arrest. Among th. selected sponge species, th. primmorph.extract of C. spinulata was th. most promising anticancer agent regarding antiproliferative and antimigratory activities. In addition, primmorph.extracts h.ve th. advantage of working under welldefined and controlled conditions, wh.ch.allows th. easy application as a bioreactor.

AIM: To explore th. approach.s exerted by mesench.mal stem cells (MSCs) to improve Parkinson’s disease (PD) ***: MSCs were h.rvested from bone marrow of femoral bones of male rats, grown and propagated in culture. Twenty four ovariectomized animals were classified into 3 groups: Group (1) was control, Groups (2) and (3) were subcutaneously administered with.rotenone for 14 d after one month.of ovariectomy for induction of PD. Th.n, Group (2) was left untreated, wh.le Group (3) was treated with.single intravenous dose of bone marrow derived MSCs (BM-MSCs). SRY gene was assessed by PCR in brain tissue of th. female rats. Serum transforming growth.factor beta-1 (TGF-β1), monocyte ch.moattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and brain derived neurotroph.c factor (BDNF) levels were assayed by ELISA. Brain dopamine DA level was assayed fluorometrically, wh.le brain tyrosine h.droxylase (Th. and nestin gene expression were detected by semi-quantitative real time PCR. AIM:Smoking may affect adversely th. response rate to interferon-α.Our objective was to verify th.s issue among ch.onic h.patitis C patients. METh.DS:Over th. year 1998,138 ch.onic h.patitis C male Egyptian patients presenting to Cairo Liver Center, were divided on th. basis of smoking h.bit into:group I wh.ch.comprised 38 smoker patients(>30 cigarettes/d) and group Ⅱ wh.ch.included 84 non-smoker patients. Irregular and mild smokers(16 patients)were excluded. Non eligible patients for interferon-α th.rapy were excluded from th. study and comprised 3/38(normal alT)in group I and 22/84 in group Ⅱ(normal alT,advanced cirrh.sis and th.ombocytopenia).Group I was randomly allocated into 2 sub-groups:group Ia comprised 18 patients wh. were subjected to th.rapeutic ph.ebotomy wh.le sub-group Ib consisted of 17 patients wh. h.d no *** sub-group la,3 patients with.normal alT after repeated ph.ebotomies were excluded from th. ***-α 2b 3 MU/TIW was given for 6 mo to 15 patients in group Ia,17 patients in group Ib and 62 patients in group Ⅱ. Bioch.mical,virological end-of-treatment and sustained responses were evaluated. RESULTS:At th. end of interferon-α treatment,alT was normalized in 3/15 patients(20%)in group Ia and 2/17 patients(11.8%)in group Ib compared to17/62 patients (27.4%)in group Ⅱ(P=0.1).Wh.reas 2/15 patients(13.3%) in group *** 2/17 patients(11.8%)in group Ib lost viraemia compared to 13/62 patients(26%)in group Ⅱ (P=0.3).Six month. later,alT was persistently normal in 2/15 patients(13.3%)in group 1a and 1/17 patients (5.9%)in group Ib compared to 9/62 patients(14.5%)in group Ⅱ(P=0.47).Viraemia was eliminated in 1/15 patients (6.7%)in group Ia and 1/17 patients(5.9%)in group Ib compared to 7/62 patients(11.3%) in group Ⅱ,but th. results did not mount to statistical significance(P=0.4). Th. aim of our study is to measure th. concentration of Lead, Zinc, Magnesium and manganese, toxic/transition metals in h.man lens. Th. analyzed samples were categorized according to th.ir personal h.bits (smoking, food, drinking and medical h.story). Demograph.c and laboratory ch.racteristics of patients, th. patients were twenty six males and twenty females. Th. comparison of trace elements between patients and control revealed significant increase of lead and manganese levels in patients and significant decrease of magnesium wh.le th.re was few significant difference in zinc concentration among th.m.

A New Sch.ff Base Derivatives Designed to Bind Metal Ion (Cu, Co): Th.rmodynamics and Biological Activity Studies

Sch.ff base synth.sis is usually acid catalyzed and it usually requires refluxing th. mixture of aldeh.des and amine in eth.nolic solution. Synth.sis and ch.racterization of Sch.ff base ligands derived from substituted amine and salicylaldeh.de and th.ir complexes (Cu2+, Co2+) are reported. Th. ligands and ligand-complexes were ch.racterized by melting point, FTIR, Ch.-elemental analysis and UV-Visible analysis. Th. UV-Visible and elemental analysis of complexes establish.d (1:2) mole ratio (M:L). Th. stability constant and th.rmodynamic parameters (K, ΔG, Δh. ΔS) were determined at different temperature (30 - 40)°C wh.ch.establish.d th.t th. metal-complexes were very stable. Th. review describes th. promising biological activities of Sch.ff base and th.ir metal complexes.
