Healthcare seeking trends in acute respiratory infections among children of Pakistan

AIM To assess healthcare seeking trends among Pakistani children with acute respiratory infections through comparative analysis between demographic health surveys(DHS) 2006-2007 and 2012-2013. METHODS Data of the last born children 0-24 mo of age of the sampled households from both the DHS was analyzedafter seeking permission from the DHS open access website. These were children who had suffered from cough and/or breathing difficulty in the past two weeks and sought health care thereafter. The trends of health care seeking were determined separately for the individual, household and community level according to the study parameters. χ2 test was applied to compare these trends. A P-value of < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Out of 2508 children in 2006-2007 there were 1590 with acute respiratory infections(ARI) according to case definition along with 2142 out of 3419 children in 2012-2013 DHS, whose data was analyzed. During 2006-2007, 69% cases sought healthcare for ARI which improved to 79% in 2012-2013. Additionally, it was revealed that when compared between 2006-2007 and 2012-2013, improvement in care seeking practices was observed among illiterate mothers(64% vs 77%) although there was minimal change in those literate. Similarly, those women working also showed an increase in healthcare seeking from 67% to 79%. Additionally, those belonging to low and middle socioeconomic class showed a marked increase as compared to those in the higher class where there was no significant change. Whereas those living in rural communities also showed an increase from 66% to 78%.CONCLUSION Increasing health budget, improving maternal education and strengthening multi-sectoral coordination are among the effective strategies to improve outcomes associated with healthcare seeking in ARI.

Students often face difficulties while taking basic programming courses due to several factors. In response, research has presented subjective assessments for diagnosing learning problems to improve the teaching of programming in higher education. In this paper, the authors propose an Object Oriented conceptual map model and organize this approach into three levels： constructing a Concept Effect Propagation Table, constructing Test Item-Concept Relationships and diagnosing Student Learning Problems with Matrix Composition. The authors＇ work is a modification of the approaches of Chert and Bai as well as Chu et al., as the authors use statistical methods, rather than fuzzy sets, for the authors＇ analysis. This paper includes a statistical summary, which has been tested on a small sample of students in King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, illustrating the learning problems in an Object Oriented course. The experimental results have demonstrated that this approach might aid learning and teaching in an effective way.

Thin films of Bismuth Telluride (Bi2Te3) are prepared by thermal evaporation from nanopowders on the glass substrates. The XRD patterns of films show that all the films are polycrystalline and the crystalline increased by annealing temperature. Measuring of the thermoelectric power of thin films in the temperature range 300 to 380 K shows that Seebeck Coefficients have both negative and positive values, indicating that the films have both n-type and p-type conductivity. The re-crystallization of films is done by annealing from 130°C to 175°C and Seebeck Coefficient varied from -150 to 100 μV/K.

Acute pancreatitis(AP) is a potentially life-threatening disease with a wide spectrum of severity. The overall mortality of AP is approximately 5%. According to the revised Atlanta classification system, AP can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Severe AP often takes a clinical course with two phases, an early and a late phase, which should both be considered separately. In this review article, we first discuss general aspects of AP, including incidence, pathophysiology, etiology, and grading of severity, then focus on the assessment of patients with suspected AP, including diagnosis and risk stratification, followed by the management of AP during the early phase, with special emphasis on fluid therapy, pain management, nutrition, and antibiotic prophylaxis.

Plasma membrane of plant cells is surrounded by cellulose wall and adjacent cells are joined together by a thick pectin rich matrix. Separation of plant cells and removal of the cell wall experimentally, by either a mechanical or an enzymatic process, results in the production ofprotoplast. Protoplasts are useful tools to study the uptake and transport ofmacromolecules and production of somatic hybrids. Protoplasts can be obtained from all types of actively growing young and healthy tissues. The most convenient and widely used source of plant protoplasts is leaf. Juvenile seedling tissues, cotyledons are other alternative tissues most frequently used for protoplasts isolation. All the environmental and genotypic factors, which affect the cell wall thickenings and compactness indirectly, influence the number of protoplasts recovered. Protoplasts are isolated by two methods, mechanical and enzymatic. The enzyme mixture solution of celluiose/macerozyme is used to digest the cell wall. The critical factors affecting the obtaning ofprotoplasts are the kinds of cell wall degrading enzymes, the physiological state of plant leaves, the type of osmotic stabilizers and the composition of reaction solution. With the improvement of technique and enzyme combination rate, the yield of collected protoplasts will be increased higher.

Differentiation of Avian Pathogenic <i>Escherichia coli</i>Strains from Broiler Chickens by Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Random Amplified Polymorphic (RAPD) DNA

We examined 50 Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains isolated from broiler chickens between January 2013 to March 2014 in order to evaluate the epidemiological prevalence of avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) in Jordan by multiplex PCR and random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) tests. The multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which was used as tentative criteria of APEC targets 8 virulence associated genes;enteroaggregative toxin (astA), Type 1 fimbria adhesion (fimH), iron-repressible protein (irp2), P fimbriae (papC), aerobactin (iucD), temperature-sensitive hemagglutinin (tsh), vacuolating autotransporter toxin (vat), and colicin V plasmid operon (cva/cvi) genes. The number of detected genes could be used as a reliable index of their virulence. E. coli strains already typed as an APEC always harbor 5 to 8 genes, but non-APEC strains harbor less than 4 genes. Assuming the criteria of an APEC is possession of 5 or more virulence associated genes;we found that all 50 E. coli strains were classified as APEC strains. The RAPD analysis showed that the E. coli strains could be grouped into 35 of RAPD types by using these two different RAPD primer sets, RAPD analysis primer 4 5'AAGAGCCCGT5', and RAPD analysis primer 6 5'CCCGTCAGCA3'. The current study confirmed the endemic nature of APEC in broiler flocks in Jordan. It is essential that the biosecurity on poultry farms should be improved to prevent the introduction and dissemination of APEC and other agents. Furthermore, farmers need to be educated about the signs, lesions, and the importance of this agent.

This paper presents a fault diagnosis method based on wavelet threshold（WT）,variational mode decomposition（VMD） and random ***,wavelet threshold method is used to preprocess the original vibration signal to reduce noise interference and enhance fault features;then VMD is used to decompose the denoised signal into several intrinsic mode functions（IMFs） and extract the center frequencies of each IMF;finally,these center frequencies will be input into the random forest classifier as feature vectors for fault type *** with the results of some existing fault diagnosis methods（such as EMD + variable prediction model,VMD + PSO-PNN,VMD + multi-scale permutation entropy + SVM）,it is found that this method greatly improves the accuracy of fault *** research results show that this method can effectively identify various fault types of rolling bearing.

Seeds with colored testa (seed coat) contain high concentrations of polyphenolic compounds that exhibit high levels of antioxidant activity. Common processing procedures, such as cooking and baking, decrease the levels of these bioactive compounds and consequently, overall antioxidant activity. Here, the effects of baking and cooking processes were examined on total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and ferric-reducing ability of plasma antioxidant activity (FRAP AA) of red and yellow quinoa seeds. Our results indicate that red quinoa seed contains significantly higher levels of TPC, TFC and FRAP AA than yellow quinoa seeds. In addition, cooked and baked quinoa seeds retain most of their TPC, TFC and FRAP AA in the final product. Thus, red quinoa seeds processed by these two methods might be considered a functional food, in addition to its traditional role of providing dietary proteins. Due to their high antioxidant activity, red quinoa seeds might also contribute significantly to the management and/or prevention of degenerative diseases associated with free radical damage.
