Physiological differences in the growth and maturation of Eisenia bicyclis and Ecklonia cava gametophytes in Korea

The objective of this study was to examine the eff ects of temperature and light intensity on growth of female gametophytes of Eisenia bicyclis and Ecklonia cava and responses of these female gametophytes to Fe addition and daylength. Female gametophytes of each species were cultured at four temperatures (10, 15, 20, and 25°C) and under a combination of four light intensities (10, 20, 40, and 80 μmol photons/(m^2 ·s)) with two temperatures (15 and 20°C for E i . bicyclis;20 and 25°C for E c . cava ) to clarify their optimal growth conditions. Growth and maturation of female gametophytes of these two species under a combination of five Fe-EDTA concentrations (0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 μmol/L) and three daylengths (10, 12, and 14 h) were also examined. The growth of E i . bicyclis gametophyte was maximal at approximately 15–20°C, 20 μmol photons/(m^2 ·s), Fe-EDTA concentration of 8 μmol/L and daylengths of 12–14 h. While E c . c ava gametophytes showed optimal growth at approximately 20–25°C, 20 μmol photons/(m^2 ·s), Fe- EDTA concentration of 8 μmol/L and daylength of 14 h. Maturation of gametophytes was enhanced at Fe-EDTA concentration of 4 μmol/L for E i . bicyclis and at 2 μmol/L for E c . c ava . In conclusion, optimal growth temperatures and Fe-EDTA concentrations for maturation of E i . bicyclis and E c . c ava gametophytes were diff erent. Higher optimal growth temperature for E c . c ava gametophytes may contribute to its wider geographical distribution compared to E i . bicyclis which has restricted habitats in Korea. This suggests that addition of Fe ion could be used to recover beds of these two species in barren grounds of Korea.

Although signifi cant research eff orts have been targeted toward conservation and management of endangered terrestrial fl ora and fauna,attempts have been limited to conserve threatened *** siliquosa is an ecologically and commercially vital brown alga that is uniquely distributed in the Yellow-Bohai Sea and along the southwest coast of Korea.A massive decline in its distribution range and biomass from the mid-1990s onward indicates that this species has become *** the present study,we used nuclear internal transcribed spacer and concatenated mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I subunit+intergenic spacer to estimate the genetic diversity,population connectivity,and degree of genetic diff erentiation of *** in China and *** molecular results exhibited strikingly low levels of haplotype/ribotype and nucleotide diversity in *** populations,with only three mitochondrial haplotypes and nuclear ribotypes detected in 136 and 143 specimens,*** analysis of molecular variance revealed 85%-95%of genetic variance among *** diff erentiation coeffi cient(F_(ST))and gene fl ow(N_(m))suggested that two populations(JIN and GWA)along the southern coast of Korea are highly divergent from the others,with weak genetic *** signifi cant genetic diff erentiation was observed among populations either in China or along the geographically proximate west coast of ***,four independent management units were designated for sustainable management:the LII and RUS populations in China,the YEO and CHA populations along the west coast of Korea,and each of the GWA and JIN populations along the south coast of *** suggest that artifi cial cultivation and transplantation of *** are the eff ective approaches for restoration and conservation.

Biomass and Community Structure of Epilithic Biofilm on the Yellow and East Coasts of Korea

Spatial biomass variation and community structure of epilithic biofilms were examined using cell counts, chlorophyll a extraction, and remote-sensing techniques. Samples were collected at two levels of wave exposure along the Yellow and East Coasts of Korea in December 2010. Cyanobacteria were dominant, occupying about 88% of biofilm, irrespective of wave exposure levels. The cyanobacteria species, Aphanotece spp. was abundant in the Yellow Coast location and Lyngbya spp. was abundant in the East coast location. The representative diatoms were Navicula spp. and Achnanthes spp. on the rocky shores of all study sites. Average Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was significantly greater in the Yellow Coast (mean 0.46) than that in the East Coast (mean 0.21);a similar pattern was observed in Vegetation Index (VI). Chlorophyll a content was three times greater on the Yellow Coast (20.50 μg/cm2) than that on the East Coast (8.21 μg/cm2), and it was greater at the Gosapo and Bangpo shore sites than that at the Gyeokpo site, on the Yellow Coast. However, chlorophyll a contents were not different between 23.33 and 17.66 μg/cm2 at exposed- and sheltered-shores of Yellow Coast, and were 9.62 μg/cm2 and 6.80 μg/cm2 on the East Coast. Vegetation indices were positively correlated with chlorophyll a contents. In conclusion, biofilm of Korean upper rocky shore was mainly composed of cyanobacteria and biofilm biomass that differed between the Yellow and East Coast.

Inexpensive and abundant sodium resources make energy storage systems using sodium chemistry promising replacements for typical lithium-ion rechargeable batteries(LIBs).Fortuitously,aqueous sodium-ion rechargeable batteries(ASIBs),which operate in aqueous electrolytes,are cheaper,safer,and more ionically conductive than batteries that operate in conventional organic electrolytes;furthermore,they are suitable for grid-scale energy storage *** electrode materials for storing Na~+ ions in ASIBs,a variety of multifunctional metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) have demonstrated great potential in terms of having porous 3 D crystal structures,compatibility with aqueous solutions,long cycle lives(≥1000 cycles),and ease of *** present review describes MOF-derived technologies for the successful application of MOFs to ASIBs and suggests future challenges in this area of research based on the current understanding.

A scheduling algorithm with dynamic properties in mobile grid

Mobile grid is a branch of grid computing that incorporates mobile devices into the grid infrastructure. It poses new challenges because mobile devices are typically resource-constrained and exhibit unique characteristics such as instability in network connections. New scheduling strate- gies are imperative in mobile grid to efficiently utilize the devices. This paper presents a scheduling algorithm that con- siders dynamic properties of mobile devices such as avail- ability, reliability, maintainability, and usage pattern in mo- bile grid environments. In particular, usage patterns caused by voluntarily or involuntarily losing a connection, such as switching off the device or a network interruption could be important criteria for choosing the best resource to execute a job. The experimental results show that our scheduling al- gorithm provides superior performance in terms of execution time, as compared to the other methods that do not consider usage pattern. Throughout the experiments, we found it es- sential to consider usage pattern for improving performance in the mobile grid.

Learning feature alignment and dual correlation for few‐shot image classification

Few‐shot image classification is the task of classifying novel classes using extremely limited labelled *** perform classification using the limited samples,one solution is to learn the feature alignment(FA)information between the labelled and unlabelled sample *** FA methods use the feature mean as the class prototype and calculate the correlation between prototype and unlabelled features to learn an alignment ***,mean prototypes tend to degenerate informative features because spatial features at the same position may not be equally important for the final classification,leading to inaccurate correlation ***,the authors propose an effective intraclass FA strategy that aggregates semantically similar spatial features from an adaptive reference prototype in low‐dimensional feature space to obtain an informative prototype feature map for precise correlation ***,a dual correlation module to learn the hard and soft correlations was developed by the *** module combines the correlation information between the prototype and unlabelled features in both the original and learnable feature spaces,aiming to produce a comprehensive cross‐correlation between the prototypes and unlabelled *** both FA and cross‐attention modules,our model can maintain informative class features and capture important shared features for *** results on three few‐shot classification benchmarks show that the proposed method outperformed related methods and resulted in a 3%performance boost in the 1‐shot setting by inserting the proposed module into the related methods.

Numerical characterization of heat transfer in closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger

A series of numerical analyses has been performed on the characteristics of heat transfer in a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger(U-loop).A 2-D finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate the temperature distribution over the cross section of the U-loop system involving high-density polyethylene(HDPE) pipe/grout/soil to compare the sectional efficiency between the conventional U-loop and a new latticed HDPE pipe system,which is equipped with a thermally insulating lattice in order to reduce thermal interference between the inlet and outlet *** addition,a 3-D finite volume analysis(FLUENT) was adopted to simulate the operation of the closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger with the consideration of the effect of a distance between the inlet and outlet pipes,grout's thermal properties,the effectiveness of the latticed HDPE pipe system,and the rate of circulation *** was observed that the thermal interference between the two strands of U-loop is of importance in enhancing efficiency of the ground heat ***,it is recommended to modify the configuration of the conventional U-loop system by equipping the thermally insulating lattice between the two pipe strands.

CoolVox:Advanced 3D convolutional neural network models for predicting solar radiation on building facades

Data-driven models have become increasingly prominent in the building,architecture,and construction *** area ideally suited to exploit this powerful new technology is building performance ***-based models have traditionally been used to estimate the energy flow,air movement,and heat balance of ***,physics-based models require many assumptions,significant computational power,and a considerable amount of time to output *** neural networks(ANNs)with prefabricated or simulated data are likely to be a more feasible option for environmental analysis conducted by designers during the early design *** ANNs require fewer inputs and shorter computation times and offer superior performance and potential for data augmentation,they have received increased attention for predicting the surface solar radiation on ***,ANNs can provide innovative and quick design solutions,enabling designers to receive instantaneous feedback on the effects of a proposed change to a building's *** research introduces deep learning methods as a means of simulating the annual radiation intensities and exposure level of buildings without the need for physics-based *** propose the CoolVox model to demonstrate the feasibility of using 3D convolutional neural networks to predict the surface radiation on building *** CoolVox model accurately predicted the radiation intensities of building facades under different boundary conditions and performed better than ARINet(with average mean square errors of 0.01 and 0.036,respectively)in predicting the radiation intensity both with(validation error=0.0165)and without(validation error=0.0066)the presence of boundary buildings.

Inclusive quasielastic neutrino-nucleus scattering with energy density functional nuclear models

In this study,we calculated the inclusive charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering from ^(40)Ar in the quasielastic *** explore the effect of uncertainties stemming from the nuclear structure,we used the KIDS(Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU)nuclear energy density functional and Skyrme force models,namely SLy4,SkI3,and *** models were selected to have distinct behavior in terms of the density dependence of the symmetry energy and the effective mass of the *** the charged-current neutrino scattering,the single-and double-differential cross sections were calculated for various *** cross sections are reported as a function of the incident neutrino *** theoretical cross sections were compared with experimental data,and the roles of the effective mass and symmetry energy were investigated in terms of charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering.
