Exploring the combination of biochar‐amended soil and automated irrigation technology for water regulation and preservation in green infrastructure

Biochar is a carbon sink material with the potential to improve water retention in various ***,for the long‐term maintenance of green infrastructure,there is an additional need to regulate the water contents in the covers to maintain vegetation growth in semiarid *** this study,biochar‐amended soil was combined with subsurface drip irrigation,and the water preservation characteristics of this treatment were investigated through a series of one‐dimensional soil column *** ascertain the best treatment method specific to semiarid climatic conditions,the test soil was amended with 0%,1%,3%,and 5%*** irrigation devices equipped with soil moisture sensors were used to control the subsurface water content with the aim of enhancing vegetation *** soil column test lasted 150 h,during which the volumetric water contents and soil suction data were *** experimental results reveal that the soil specimen amended with 3%biochar is the most water‐saving regardless of the time *** with a higher biochar content(e.g.,5%)consumes a more significant amount of water due to the enhancement of the water‐holding *** on the experimental results,it can be concluded that the appropriate ratio can be determined within 1%–3%,which can reduce not only the amount of irrigated/used water but also the time *** technology can be explored for water content regulation in green infrastructure and the development of barriers for protecting the environment around deep underground waste containment.

Prevalence of vegetation browning in China’s drylands under climate change

Vegetation greening has long been acknowledged,but recent studies have pointed out that vegetation greening is possibly stalled or even ***,detailed analyses about greening reversal or increased browning of vegetation remain *** this study,we utilized the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)as an indicator of vegetation to investigate the trends of vegetation greening and browning(monotonic,interruption,and reversal)through the breaks for the additive season and trend(BFAST)method across China’s drylands from 1982 to *** also reveals the impacts of ecological restoration programs(ERPs)and climate change on these vegetation *** find that the vegetation displays an obvious pattern of east-greening and west-browning in China’s *** trends mainly exhibits monotonic greening(29.8%)and greening with setback(36.8%),whereas browning shows a greening to browning reversal(19.2%).The increase rate of greening to browning reversal is 0.0342/yr,which is apparently greater than that of greening with setback,0.0078/*** research highlights that,under the background of widespread vegetation greening,vegetation browning is pro-gressively increasing due to the effects of climate ***,the ERPs have significantly increased vegetation coverage,with the increase rate in 2000-2022 being twice as much as that of 1982-1999 in reveg-etation *** browning in southwestern Qingzang Plateau is primarily driven by adverse climatic factors and anthropogenic disturbances,which offset the efforts of ERPs.

Repeated release of cerium oxide nanoparticles altered algal responses:growth,photosynthesis,and photosynthetic gene expression

The expanding production of engineered nanomaterials(ENMs)can eventually cause their increased release into and presence in aquatic ecosystems,potentially threatening the health of aquatic organisms and the stability of the ecological ***,ENMs are repeatedly released into real-world aquatic environments in relatively low concentrations,potentially affecting photosynthesis in primary producers such as ***,knowledge regarding the effects of repeated exposure to ENMs on algal photosynthesis is still ***,the physiological responses of the freshwater algae Chlorella vulgaris following single and repeated exposures to cerium oxide nanoparticles(CeO2 NPs)were investigated at 10 mg/L,with a focus on *** results showed that repeated exposures triggered increased photosynthetic pigment contents,oxidative stress levels,decreased photosynthetic performance,and lower biomass in *** compared to a single ***-related genes(i.e.,petA,petB,psaA,atpB,and rbcL)were found to be upregulated following repeated *** for petB,repeated rather than single exposure treatment significantly upregulated its expression levels by 2.92–10.24-fold compared to unexposed ***,increased exposure times could aggravate the interaction between CeO2 NPs and algae,elevating 8.13%,12.13%,and 20.51%Ce distribution on the algal cell surface or intracellularly,compared to a single *** study is the first to investigate the effects of ENM exposure times on algal photosynthesis,providing new insights into the assessment of the risks these materials pose to real-world aquatic environments.

Early growth response protein 1(Egr-1)triggers the transcription of many genes involved in cell growth,differentiation,synaptic plasticity,and ***,its mechanism in neuronal survival and degeneration is still poorly *** study demonstrated that Egr-1 was down-regulated at mRNA and protein levels in the central nervous system(CNS)of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis(EAE)***-1 knockout exacerbated EAE progression in mice,as shown by increased disease severity and incidence;it also aggravated neuronal apoptosis,which was associated with weakened activation of the BDNF/TgFβ1/MAPK/Akt signaling pathways in the CNS of EAE ***,Egr-1 siRNA promoted apoptosis but mitigated the activation of BDNF/TgFβ1/MAPK/Akt signaling in SH-SY5Y *** results revealed that Egr-1 is a crucial regulator of neuronal survival in EAE by regulating TgFβ1-mediated signaling activation,implicating the important role of Egr-1 in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis as a potential novel therapy target.

A Dietary Supplement Jinghuosu Ameliorates Reproductive Damage Induced by Tripterygium glycosides

To address the hazardous by-product of zinc smelting and resource utilization of jarosite residue,this study applies an electric field-assisted hot acid treatment to completely recycle iron(Fe).This innovative approach aims to enhance the leaching efficiency of Fe from jarosite *** introduction of an electric field changes the charge distribution on the surface of the particles to enhance ions and electrons exchange and promotes the collision between particles to strengthen reaction *** on the above,the leaching efficiency of Fe in jarosite under sulfuric acid attack has improved *** result shows that Fe leaching efficiency reaches 98.83%,which is increased by 28%under the optimal experimental conditions:current density of 30 mA·cm^(-2),H_(2)SO_(4) concentration of 1.5 mol·L^(-1),solid-liquid ratio of 70 g·L^(-1),temperature of 80℃ and time of 12 *** kinetics calculations show that the apparent activation energy is 16.97 kJ·mol^(-1) and the leaching of jarosite residue is controlled by a mixture of chemical reaction and diffusion,as well as the temperature and concentration of the leaching solution have an influence on *** work provides a feasible idea for the efficient leaching of Fe from jarosite residue.

Controllable surface reconstruction of copper foam for electrooxidation of benzyl alcohol integrated with pure hydrogen production

Electrocatalytic water splitting that is coupled with electrocatalytic chemical oxidation is considered as one of the promising methods for efficiently obtaining hydrogen energy and fine ***,we focus on an electrochemical redox activation strategy to rationally manipulate the microstructure and surface valence states of copper foam(CF)and boost the corresponding performance towards electrocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation(EBA),accompanied by the efficient hydrogen ***,the Cu(II)‐dominated species are gradually formed on the CF surface with the dissolution and redeposition of copper in the suitable potential *** new species containing Cu2O,CuO,and Cu(OH)2 during surface reconstruction process of the CF were confirmed by multiple characterization *** 220‐cycled activation(CF‐220),the activated CF achieves an increase of current density for EBA in anode from 9.5 for the original CF to 29.3 mmol/cm2,while the pure hydrogen yield increases threefold than that of the original CF at 1.5 *** produced new species can endow the CF‐220 with abundant acidity sites,which can enhance the adsorption toward Lewis‐basicity benzyl alcohol,confirmed by NH3‐temperature‐programmed *** situ Raman result further reveals that the as‐produced CuO,Cu(OH)2,and Cu(OH)42−are the main active species toward the EBA process.

Marine renewable energy,combining wave energy converters(WECs)and floating wind turbines(FWTs)into hybrid wave-wind energy converters(HWWECs),garners significant global *** offer potential cost reductions,increased power generation,and enhanced system *** absorption power of high wind energy sites is primarily influenced by the complex hydrodynamic interactions among floating bodies,which are closely related to the location and wind-wave environment of high wind energy *** delve into the positive interactions among HWWECs,this paper proposes a HWWEC array optimization strategy based on the artificial ecosystem opti-mization-manta ray foraging optimization coordinated op-timizer(EMCO).In EMCO,the decomposition operator of artificial ecosystem optimization(AEO)and the flip-ping-dipper foraging operator of manta ray foraging opti-mization coordinated(MRFO)cooperate dynamically to effectively balance local exploitation and global *** validate the effectiveness of EMCO,experiments were conducted in scenarios with 3,5,8,and 20 HWWECs,and compared with five typical *** results demonstrate the existence of multiple optimal solutions for HWWEC *** achieves maximum total absorp-tion power and exhibits good ***,EMCO en-hances the q-factor values of HWWECs across four scales:1.0478,1.0586,1.0612,and 0.9965,*** Terms—Marine renewable energy,hybrid wind-wave energy converter,layout optimization,coordinating optimizer.
