Multi-objective optimization of wastewater treatment using electrocoagulation

This work aims to develop a model that will improve the performance and energy efficiency of a novel electrocoagulation (EC) process utilized in wastewater treatment to extrapolate the findings to an industrial scale. Utilizing Design of experiments (DOE) allows us to maximize treatment efficiency while minimizing energy consumption. This evaluation was conducted by employing aluminum electrodes as sacrificial anodes. The main factors identified in preliminary experiments are the pH of the medium, the applied potential, and the treatment time. A three-level (33) factorial design was employed to examine the relationship between efficiency performance and energy consumption. Under optimal conditions, treatment efficiency is around 66% for biological oxygen demand within 5 days (BOD5), 98% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), associated with a minimum energy consumption of 2.39 kW center dot h center dot mg-1-COD. The parameters most significantly influenced by the mathematical models obtained were the potential or applied current, treatment time, and their interaction. The modeling results were also correlated with the experimental results and there were minimal discrepancies. Mechanical agitation in baffled vessels with turbines plays a vital role in achieving homogeneous fluid mixing and promoting various transfer ***,designing vessels with optimal energy efficiency and flow dynamics is essential to enhance operational performance and eliminate flow ***,the present research focuses on a numerical investigation of the impact of inclined slots with different angles installed at the side-wall of a cylindrical vessel equipped with a Rushton *** study explores power consumption and vortex size while considering various rotation directions of the impeller with different rotation *** numerical simulations are conducted for Reynolds numbers ranging from 104 to 105,using the RANS k-εturbulence model to govern the flow inside the stirred vessel,accounting for mass and momentum *** results have shown that the installation of slots reduces power consumption and vortex size compared to conventional vessel ***,increasing the slot angle from 0 to 32.5°further reduces energy consumption and vortex size,especially with negative rotation *** the other hand,increasing the Reynolds numbers leads to a decrease in power consumption and an increase in vortex *** present research therefore proposes a design for con-structing Rushton-turbine stirred vessels offering optimal operation,characterized by reduced energy consumption and minimized vortex size.

A simple hand calculation method based on group theory is proposed to predict the near field maps of finite metallic nanoparticles(MNP)of canonical geometries:prism,cube,hexagon,disk,sphere,*** to low order localized surface plasmon resonance *** this article,we report the principles of the group theory approach and demonstrate,through several examples,the general character of the group theory method which can be applied to describe the plasmonic response of particles of finite or infinite symmetry point *** validation is achieved by collection of high-resolution subwavelength near-field maps by photoemission electron microscopy(PEEM)on a representative set of Au colloidal particles exhibiting either finite(hexagon)or infinite(disk,sphere)symmetry point groups.

The effects of light illuminance and correlated color temperature on mood and creativity

The lighting environment is one of the indoor environmental factors that may influence *** combined effects of illumination(300 lx vs.2000 lx)and color temperature(3000 K vs.6000 K)on mood and creativity were investigated in 24 *** exposure,participants completed questionnaires to assess their mood and lighting perceptions,performed creative and analytical tasks,and collected saliva samples for analysis of melatonin *** interactive effect of illuminance and color temperature on the mood was *** participants performed better on the performance of Flexibility,Fluency and Originality in the verbal creative task when they expressed higher positive mood(at 2000 lx,6000 K and 300 lx,3000 K)and performed better on the performance of Resistance to closure in the figural creative task when they reported the lowest positive mood(at 2000 lx,3000 K).Analytical thinking,including calculation and echoic memory skills,was facilitated at the lighting setting(300 lx,6000 K)that induced the least affective *** significant difference in melatonin concentration was *** evidence implies that the affective state of the occupants was influenced by light and that their creative performance was altered *** findings will help to elaborate a design guideline on the lighting environment according to the specific needs of different tasks.

Potential risk of soil irrigation with treated wastewater over 40 years:a field experiment under semi-arid conditions in northeastern Tunisia

In Tunisia,water scarcity is only adding pressure on water demand in *** the context of sustainable development goals,Tunisia has been reusing treated wastewater(TWW)as a renewable and inexpensive source for soil fertigation and groundwater(GW)***,major risks can be expected when the irrigation water is of poor *** study aims for evaluating the potential risk of TWW and GW irrigation on soil ***,we evaluated the suitability of water quality through the analysis of major and minor cations and anions,metallic trace elements(MTEs),and the sodium hazard by using the sodium adsorption ratio(SAR)and the soluble sodium percentage(SSP).The risk of soil sodicity was further assessed by SAR and the exchangeable sodium percentage(ESP).The degree of soil pollution caused by MTEs accumulation was evaluated using geoaccumulation index(Igeo)and pollution load index(PLI).Soil maps were generated using inverse spline interpolation in ArcGIS *** results show that both water samples(i.e.,TWW and GW)are suitable for soil irrigation in terms of salinity(electrical conductivity5.00),followed by Ni^(2+)and Pb^(2+).Nevertheless,Cd^(2+)presents the lowest risk of soil pollution(Igeo50.0%).This study shows that the use of imagery tools,such as ArcGIS,can

Local Radial Basis Function Methods: Comparison, Improvements, and Implementation

Radial Basis Function methods for scattered data interpolation and for the numerical solution of PDEs were originally implemented in a global manner. Subsequently, it was realized that the methods could be implemented more efficiently in a local manner and that the local approaches could match or even surpass the accuracy of the global implementations. In this work, three localization approaches are compared: a local RBF method, a partition of unity method, and a recently introduced modified partition of unity method. A simple shape parameter selection method is introduced and the application of artificial viscosity to stabilize each of the local methods when approximating time-dependent PDEs is reviewed. Additionally, a new type of quasi-random center is introduced which may be better choices than other quasi-random points that are commonly used with RBF methods. All the results within the manuscript are reproducible as they are included as examples in the freely available Python Radial Basis Function Toolbox.

A GIS-Based Geological Model for Assessing the Reserves of Phosphate in the Tozeur-Nefta Field, Southern Tunisia

The Gafsa phosphate basin is the most significant mining region in Tunisia with more than 8 million tons of natural phosphate extracted annually. Both the economic and industrial developments of Tunisia rely heavily on Phosphate deposit and this holds true as long as appropriate estimation of the reserves is undertaken. The aim of this study is to geostatistically explore the phosphate spatial distribution and geological reserve in the Tozeur-Nafta area (part of Gafsa phosphate basin) in Southwestern of Tunisia through sixty boreholes that had been randomly drilled. Optimal unbiased geostatistical tools of ArcGIS-Geostatistical analysts have been used to investigate the quantification of spatial arrangement through outlining the most optimum variogram model. The phosphate-thickness kriged map has shown a spatial distribution of phosphate in the southern of Tunisia. The variants of phosphate thickness in the kriged map reveal there is a rise of phosphate deposits towards the east. Two East-West and North-South correlations were applied using RockWorks16 software which provides visual correlation for phosphate thickness distribution throughout the Tozeur-Nafta region. The East-West correlation confirms that phosphate layer thickness increased towards the East direction, the North-South correlation shows that phosphate thickness in the northeastern limb of the Tozeur-Nafta anticline is more pronounced than in the southeastern limb. Phosphate reserves were estimated using the Ordinary Kriging Method (OKM) at 325.432661 Million tons. The results of this research indicate that the area under study shows much promise as a prospective target for investment in the local raw materials.
