Determination of Parameters Affecting the estimation of Iceberg Draft

Recent offshore oil and gas loading facilities developed in the Arctic area have led to a considerable awareness of the iceberg draft approximation, where deep keel icebergs may gouge the ocean floor, and these submarine infrastructures would be damaged in the shallower waters. Developing reliable solutions to estimate the iceberg draft requires a profound understanding of the problem’s dominant parameters. As such, the dimensionless groups of the parameters affecting the iceberg draft estimation were determined for the first time in the present study. Using the dimensionless groups recognized and the linear regression(LR) analysis, nine LR models(i.e., LR 1 to LR 9) were developed and then validated using a comprehensive dataset, which has been constructed in this study. A sensitivity analysis distinguished the premium LR models and important dimensionless groups. The best LR model, as a function of all dimensionless parameters, was able to estimate the iceberg draft with the highest level of precision and correlation along with the lowest degree of complexity. The ratio of iceberg length to iceberg height as the “iceberg length ratio” and the ratio of iceberg width to iceberg height as the “iceberg width ratio” was detected as the important dimensionless groups in the estimation of the iceberg draft. An uncertainty analysis demonstrated that the best LR model was biased towards underestimating the iceberg drafts. The premium LR model outperformed the previous empirical ***, a set of LR-based relationships were derived for estimating the iceberg drafts for practical engineering applications, e.g., the early stages of the iceberg management projects.

Uncertainty of concrete strength in shear and flexural behavior of beams using lattice modeling

This paper numerically studied the effect of uncertainty and random distribution of concrete strength in beams failing in shear and flexure using lattice modeling,which is suitable for statistical *** independent variables of this study included the level of strength reduction and the number of members with reduced *** levels of material deficiency(i.e.,10%,20%,30%)were randomly introduced to 5%,10%,15%,and 20%of *** provide a database and reliable results,1000 analyses were carried out(a total of 24000 analyses)using the MATLAB software for each *** studies were conducted for both shear-and flexure-deficit beams under four-point loading and results were compared using finite element software where *** of lattice modeling was highlighted as an efficient tool to account for uncertainty in statistical *** showed that the number of deficient members had a more significant effect on beam capacity compared to the level of strength *** scatter of random load-capacities was higher in flexure(range:0.680-0.990)than that of shear(range:0.795-0.996).Finally,nonlinear regression relationships were established with coefficient of correlation values(R^(2))above 0.90,which captured the overall load-deflection response and level of load reduction.

Objectives: Atlantoaxial dislocation remains a rare and serious condition with a high preoperative and postoperative morbidity and mortality. Its successful surgical management is still challenging and gratifying for neurosurgeons. Several technics have been described such as wiring, trans articular screwing, C1C2 screwing with plate and screw introduced by Goel et al., and modified by insertion of polyaxially screw and rod many years later by harms. Unavailability and expensiveness of upper cervical spine instrumentation device led us to C1C2 Wiring resulting in a good outcome. Finally, a quadriplegic patient with a more comfortable financial condition had ordered devices from abroad and benefit for Goel and harms screwing technique and improved dramatically from ASIA A to ASIA e. Material and methods: This is a retrospective study of patients managed in our department by a same neurosurgeon from January 2019 to April 2024. Results: We defined 6 men and 1 woman with an average age of 33 years. Unrestrained driver in a rollover motor vehicle accident was most common. Only one patient was neurologically intact on admission. Neurovegetative disorders were noticed in one patient. Dislocation was associated to a fracture of the dens in two patients. Three patients have been successfully operated with remarkable outcome, mostly from ASIA A to e. Conclusion: C1C2 dislocation is a serious condition and C1C2 Wiring represents an effective and cheaper technic. Therefore, this technic should deserve consideration above all in low incomes countries when screwing devices are not available. Seatbelt should be demanded for motor vehicle drivers and passengers.

Antimicrobial properties of dental cements modified with zein-coated magnesium oxide nanoparticles

The aim of this study was to test the antimicrobial properties of dental cements modified with magnesium oxide(MgO)***-modified MgO nanoparticles(zMgO)in concentrations(0.0,0.3,0.5,and 1.0%)were mixed with dental cements(Fuji II,Rely X Temp e,Ionoglass Cem,es Temp Ne,and System P link).eight discs were fabricated from each zMgO-cement pair for a total of 32 specimens for each *** of the dental cements incorporating zMgO was done by X-ray Diffraction(XRD)and Field emission Scanning electron Microscopy(FeSeM).The antimicrobial properties of the mixtures were tested using direct contact and agar diffusion assays against Streptococcus mutans,Staphylococcus aureus,enterococcus faecalis,and Candida *** was analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and LSD post hoc test at 0.05 significance *** spectra showed sharp peaks of zMgO indicating its high crystalline nature,while the amorphous dental cements with zMgO had broad *** analysis showed a uniform distribution of the zMgO nanoparticles in the *** were significant inhibition zone values associated with all concentrations of zMgO-cement mixtures tested compared to controls(ph a dose-response recorded only with Fuji *** density values were significantly lower in zMgO groups compared to controls for all *** effect was most prominent with Rely X against *** and *** cements containing zMgO showed significant antimicrobial properties that were dependent on the specific initial cement substrate.

The frequency of wing damage in a migrating butterfly

The ability to fly is crucial for migratory ***,the accumulation of damage on the wings over time can affect survival,especially for species that travel long *** examined the frequency of irreversible wing damage in the migratory butterfly Vanessa cardui to explore the effect of wing structure on wing damage frequency,as well as the mechanisms that might mitigate wing *** exceptionally high migration rate driven by high precipitation levels in their larval habitats in the winter of 2018–2019 provided us with an excellent opportunity to collect data on the frequency of naturally occurring wing damage associated with long-distance *** images of 135 individuals of *** were collected and analyzed in *** results show that the hindwings experienced a greater frequency of damage than the ***,forewings experienced more severe damage on the lateral margin,whereas hindwings experienced more damage on the trailing *** frequency of wing margin damage was higher in the painted lady butterfly than in the migrating monarch butterfly and in the butterfly Pontia occidentalis following artificially induced wing *** results of this study could be used in future comparative studies of patterns of wing damage in butterflies and other *** studies are needed to clarify whether the strategies for coping with wing damage differ between migratory and nonmigratory species.

exploring the mechanical properties of steel-and polypropylene-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete through numerical analyses and experimental multi-target digital image correlation

This study presents experimental and numerical investigations on the mechanical properties of ultrahigh-performance concrete(UhPC)reinforced with single and hybrid micro-and macro-steel and polypropylene *** this purpose,a series of cubic,cylindrical,dog-bone,and prismatic beam specimens(total fiber by volume=1%,and 2%)were tested under compressive,tensile,and flexural loadings.A method,namely multi-target digital image correlation(MT-DIC)was used to monitor the displacement and deflection *** obtained experimental data were subsequently used to discuss influential parameters,i.e.,flexural strength,tensile strength,size effect,*** analyses were also carried out using finite element software to account for the sensitivity of different ***,nonlinear regression analyses were conducted to obtain the flexural load-deflection *** results showed that the MT-DIC method was capable of estimating the tensile and flexural responses as well as the location of the crack with high *** addition,the regression analyses showed excellent consistency with the experimental results,with correlation coefficients close to ***,size-effect modeling revealed that modified Bazant theory yielded the best estimation of the size-effect phenomenon compared to other models.
