in a local context, sustainable development entails utilizing the current resources—material and immaterial, measurable and immeasurable, popular and unpopular—of the community in a manner that avoids overexploitation and ensures intergenerational equity. This approach prioritizes the safety and health of local citizens, placing communal productivity above corporate profitability. This research aims to assess air quality surrounding 28 chemical industry sites in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to understand the environmental and health impacts of industrial pollutants, with a focus on environmental justice. Air quality pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO, and SO2, were monitored for 75 days during the Summer, using the BreezoMeter app. Python, Mapize, and QGiS software technologies were utilized for data analysis and visualization. Findings indicate a reduction in NO2 and CO levels, compared to existing literature. However, the persistent challenge of particulate matter suggests areas for further environmental management efforts. Additionally, the research suggests a significant disparity in air pollution exposure, probably affecting marginalized communities. Although the nature of the study might not fully capture annual pollution trends, the findings highlight the urgent need for the chemical industry to adopt efficient production methods and for policymakers to enhance air quality standards and enforcement, particularly in pollution-sensitive areas. The disproportionate impact of air pollution on vulnerable communities calls for a more inclusive approach to environmental justice, ensuring equitable distribution of clean air benefits and community involvement in pollution management decisions.

Ultimate bearing capacity(UBC)is a key subject in geotechnical/foundation engineering as it determines the limit of loads imposed on the *** most reliable means of determining UBC is through experiment,but it is costly and time-consuming which has led to the development of various models based on the simplified *** outcomes of the models are usually validated with the experimental results,but a large gap usually exists between ***,a model that can give a close prediction of the experimental results is *** study proposes a grasshopper optimization algorithm(GOA)and salp swarm algorithm(SSA)to optimize artificial neural networks(ANNs)using the existing UBC experimental *** performances of the proposed models are evaluated using various statistical *** obtained results are compared with the existing *** proposed models outperformed the existing *** proposed hybrid GOA-ANN and SSA-ANN models are then transformed into mathematical forms that can be incorporated into geotechnical/foundation engineering design codes for accurate UBC measurements.

Blasting of rocks has intrinsic environmental impacts such as ground vibration,which can interfere with the safety of lives and ***,accurate prediction of the environmental impacts of blasting is imperative as the empirical models are not accurate as evident in the ***,there is need to consider some robust predictive models for accurate prediction *** expression programming(GeP),adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFiS),and sine cosine algorithm optimized artificial neural network(SCA-ANN)models are proposed for predicting the blast-initiated ground vibration in five granite *** input parameters into the models are the distance from the point of blasting to the point of measurement(d),the weight of charge per delay(W),rock density(q),and the Schmidt rebound hardness(SRH)value while peak particle velocity(PPV)is the targeted output.100 datasets were used in developing the proposed *** performance of the proposed models was examined using the coefficient of determination(R2)and error *** R2 values obtained for the GeP,ANFiS,and SCA-ANN models are 0.989,0.997,and 0.999,respectively,while their errors are close to *** proposed models are compared with an empirical model and are found to outperform the empirical model.

On the Co-Variability between Climate indices and the Potential Spread of Seasonal Climate Simulations over South African Provinces

This study investigates the co-variability between measures of the spreads in the ensembles of seasonal climate simulations and large scale climate indices. Spreads in the ensembles of seasonal simulations (of rainfall and near surface air temperature) from an atmospheric model, over South African provinces, are quantified with the de-trended anomalies of standard deviation (Stddev) and the distance between the 90th and 10th percentiles (RoP) of the simulations. Results indicate that, on seasonal time scales, measures of spread significantly co-vary with observed global sea surface temperatures (SST) far and near. This suggests that the climate factors controlling the degree to which the seasonal climate may be precisely forecast over the South African provinces may both be locally and remotely based. Results also indicate that all significant predictors of spread—el Niño-Southern Oscillation (eNSO), indian Ocean dipole (iOd), Benguela Niño (BGN) and Southwest indian Ocean index (SWi), are of tropical origin;they co-vary significantly with measures of spread on seasonal time scales over a number of provinces and seasons, particularly during the rainfall onset and peak periods, as well as during the cold season. Nevertheless, responses of measures of spread to climate predictors are relatively small, either indicating that predictor-spread relationships are more complex in nature than can be represented by the traditionally simple climate indices, or indicating that controls on ensemble spread are weak. Therefore, there may be limits to the extent to which year-to-year variations in the predictability of seasonal climate over South Africa provinces might be understood.

Machine design Approach to Bone Waste Utilization in Slaughterhouses of developing Countries with Focus on Nigeria

The conversion of bone waste obtained from meat processing in slaughterhouses is of great significance across the world, with rising concerns about its utilization in developing countries. in Nigeria, for instance, there are fewer successful strategies to transform bone waste into high-value products. While most research papers have concentrated on revealing the environmental, aesthetic, and catastrophic health problems associated with the current slaughterhouse waste disposal in developing countries, this paper presents an engineering approach to managing slaughterhouse solid wastes that majorly consist of bones and horns. A medium-size bone milling machine was designed and fabricated with well-detailed design principles to make it reproducible in any industrial capacity. 3d modeling and simulation were employed to evaluate the machine design and performance. Static simulations performed show that the machine can withstand values of 219.313 kPa, 12.7 exp 7 MPa and 2182.5 Nm for the shaft bending moment, hammer pressure, and output torque, respectively. The machine is 98% efficient on performance evaluation, milling 250 kg of treated sun-dried cow bones in an average time of 10 min 2 sec. This paper also recommends workable means for the installation and utilization of the bone milling machine in slaughterhouses across Nigeria.

diversity and Origin of indigenous Village Chickens (Gallus gallus) from Chad, Central Africa

in this study we assess the maternal genetic diversity and origin of indigenous village chickens from Chad complementing previous phenotypic and biometric measurements studies. We analysed a 387 bp fragment of the mitochondrial dNA (mtdNA) d-loop region of 181 village chickens from three populations of western Chad (Lake Chad/Hadjer Lamis), central Chad (Guera) and south-west Chad (Pala) and at different poultry markets in N'djamena. Twenty-five polymorphic sites and 20 haplotypes are identified. Phylogenetic and network analyses group all chicken into a single mtdNA haplogroup d. Comparison with reference sequences shows that this haplogroup is the commonest one observed in chicken and it supports the indian subcontinent as the maternal center of origin for the village chicken in Chad. Little genetic variation was found within and between populations which is in agreement with a recent and a maternal founding effect for the chicken in the country.

diminazene aceturate modified nanocomposite for improved efficacy in acute trypanosome infection

Objective: To investigate the improved antitrypanocidal activity and toxicity of diminazene aceturate modified Nano drug in experimental rats. Methods: Aqueous leaf extract of Hyptis suaveolens was used to reduce gold tetrachloride to its nanoparticle size and this was characterized and formulates with naturally synthesized polyhydroxybutyrateas a Nano carrier. A total of thirty (30) albino rats were group into 6 (A-F) of 5 rats each & infected intraperitoneally with 0.2 mL of the inoculum containing about 1×103 Trypanosoma brucei brucei parasites per 0.2 mL of blood. Groups A and B were treated with 3 and 6 minutes released orange PHB, Groups C and d were treated with 15 and 30 minutes released mango PHB formulated tablet while Groups e and F were negative (untreated) and standard drug (dininazene aceturare) respectively. Results: The free drug and modified orange synthesized polyhydroxy butyrate shows antitrypanocidal activities by reducing the replicating rate of the parasite as compared to infect untreated. While the modified- mango synthesized shows increasing order of replication. There were significant increases in all the haematological parameter evaluated in the infected treated groups compared to infect untreated. But no significant difference (Perved in the Catalase activity in the serum and liver of all the groups whereas, the modified orange synthesized shows significant decrease in other enzymes activities evaluated when compared with the free drug, mango synthesized and the infected untreated groups. Conclusion: Orange synthesized modified diminazene aceturate show efficacy as free drug with limited toxicity that can enhance the therapeutic.

diabetes mellitus has not ceased to be on rise in spite of the continuous research on its management. Brain dysfunction associated with diabetes mellitus especially Type ii has been the great concern. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of insulin sensitizing drug metformin and ethanolic extract of garlic on membrane bound enzymes Na+/K+ ATPase, Ca2+ ATPase and glutamate-glutamine cycle enzyme, Glutamine Synthetase activities in the hippocampus of streptozotocin-Nicotinamide induced Type ii diabetic rats. Twenty four male wistar rats weighted 120 - 150 g were used and divided into four groups with six rats in each group. Group A was non-diabetic (Control) and Groups B, C and d were diabetic. Group B received no treatment (dNT) while Groups C and d were treated with 1000 mg/kg of ethanolic garlic extract (eGe) and 50 mg/kg of metformin (MeT) respectively orally for three weeks. All the groups were fed on standard rat chow with water ad libitum. Blood glucose was monitored weekly. Animals were sacrificed and the brains were removed and hippocampi were carefully excised and homogenate were obtained. Homogenate was analyzed for Na+/K+ ATPase, Ca2+ ATPase and Glutamine Synthetase (GS) activities. MeT and eGe significantly reduced the blood glucose levels. There was a significant increase in the activities of hippocampal Na+/K+ ATPase, Ca2+ ATPase and GS in MeT and eGe when compared to dNT. The results suggest that both MeT and eGe increase the activities of hippocampal Na+/K+ ATPase, Ca2+ ATPase and GS which were reduced by diabetes mellitus, thus garlic and metformin administration exhibiting neuroprotective effect during hippocampal-related disorders associated with diabetes mellitus.

【目的】提高温室甜瓜采摘机器人在复杂光线变化和枝叶遮挡情况下的检测精度,实现检测目标的空间坐标定位。【方法】基于YOLOv3,研究优化不同主干网络,头部、颈部网络结构及边界框损失函数组合对模型检测性能的影响,建立甜瓜严重遮挡下的目标检测网络模型YOLOResNet70,然后将模型与intel RealSense d435i传感器融合进行目标空间定位。【结果】模型YOLOResNet70采用ResNet70为主干网络,结合SPP (Spatial pyramid pooling)、CioU (Complete intersection over union)、FPN (Feature pyramid network)以及NMS (Greedy non-maximum suppression)时性能最佳,模型平均精度(AP)达到89.4%,优于Y OLOv3的83.3%和YOLOv5的82%,其检测速度(61.8帧/s)比YOLOv4(54.1帧/s)快14%。【结论】通过对不同光照条件下的遮挡甜瓜图像进行检测测试,表明YOLOResNet70模型鲁棒性良好,并且与intel RealSense d435i深度传感器融合实现了甜瓜的空间定位坐标,与手工测量结果吻合,为甜瓜采摘机器人目标检测和空间定位提供了理论和模型支持。
