Isolated lateral leg compartment syndrome:A case report

BACKGROUND Acute leg compartment syndrome is a well-known orthopedic emergency associated with potentially devastating consequences if not treated *** compartments are usually involved with a clear history of trauma and classic symptoms and ***,isolated lateral leg compartment syndrome is relatively rare and is often misdiagnosed due to the atypical presentation of no trauma and the lack of pathognomonic *** SUMMARY A 31-year-old male patient presented to our emergency room with excruciating left calf pain and inability to mobilize one-day after participating in a football match despite no clear history of preceding *** patient went to another hospital before presenting to us where he was diagnosed to have a soft tissue injury and was discharged home on simple *** clinical examination,the left leg showed a tense lateral compartment with severe *** pain was aggravated by dorsiflexion and ankle *** examination of the limb was *** suspected a compartment syndrome but as the presentation was atypical and an magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)was readily available in our institution,we immediately performed an MRI and this confirmed a large hematoma in the lateral compartment with a possible partial proximal peroneus longus muscle *** patient was taken immediately for an emergency open *** patient is now 18 mo postoperatively having recovered completely and engages fully in sports with no *** Atypical presentation due to the lack of pathognomonic signs makes the diagnosis of isolated lateral leg compartment syndrome *** on passive inversion and dorsiflexion and weak active eversion may be suggested as sensitive signs.

Experimental Study of Biogas Production from Cow Dung as an alternative for Fossil Fuels

To treat the problem of fossil fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions, biogas is considered a potential source of clean renewable energy. The aim of the work is to a.alyze the amount of biogas and ph from cow dung when an anaerobic digester operates in the mesophilic mode. In this study is presented the experimental investigation of biogas production from cow dung as an alternative energy resource. This is work using an 18 Liters capacity plastic as prototype biogas plant, plant to inspect the anaerobic digestion in producing biogas. The digester was batch operated and daily gas produced from the plant was observed for 30 days. The digester was fed within the ratio of 1:1 of dung to water respectively. The operating temperatures of the digester were maintained within mesophilic conditions. The Biogas production from cow dung fluctuates from the first day to the thirtieth day between 0 and 340 ml. The pH of cow dung is gradual reduction within the retention period.

Gallbladder Disorders Detected by Ultrasound

Patients who have disease of the biliary tract commonly present with acute right upper quadrant pain, nausea or vomiting, mid-epigastric pain, and/or jaundice. Etiologies include inflammation with or without infection, noninflammatory disorders, and benign or malignant neoplasms of the gallbladder or bile ducts. Ultrasound (US) is now accepted as the initial imaging modality of choice for the work-up of suspected biliary tract disease. A retrospective study was carried out at King Abdulaziz University Hospital to discuss the protocol of ultrasound scanning in demonstrating incidence and complication of Gall-bladder (GB) pathologies. Known cases of GB pathologies (100 patients) were surveyed by ultrasound using spatial digital iU22 Philips Convex probe 3.5 MHz. all patients were evaluated with ultrasonogphy following the international scanning guidelines and protocols. The age of the patients is between (9 - 90) years, 68 Patients (68%) were females and 32 patients (32%) were males. Range of age group of accumulation for gallstone presence was (35 - 50) years in females and above 50 years in males. Incidence of gallbladder pathologies are 59% (female 46% and 13% male). Incidence of gallstone is 37%, and ratio of incidence is between male to female 1:3. Other pathologies of gallbladder were found to be acute cholecystities 12%, chronic cholocystities 5%, sludge 2%, carcinoma of the Gall-bladder 1%, Gall-bladder polyps 1% and Emphysematous choleycystities 1%. Ultransonography is a single imaging modality sufficient for evaluation of patient with suspected gallbladder pathologies (gallstone) which can provide information about the presence of gallstone and more over about site and cause of biliary tract obstruction. Ultrasound is highly sensitive and specific means for diagnosis of the gallbladder disorders.

Investigating the Use of Combined Hydrogen, Heat and Power System for Omar al-Mukhtar University Campus

This paper investigates the use of a combined hydrogen, heat, and power (CHHP) system for Omar al-Mukhtar University campus using local resources. Based on previous local resource assessment studies, the hydrogen team of Omar al-Mukhtar University (OMU) selected the fuelcell energy DFC4000TM unit. This study shows that the CHHP system can provide electricity to power the university campus, thermal energy for heating the anaerobic digester, and hydrogen for transportation, back-up power and other needs. Consequently, using the alternative fuels and renewable energy resources for OMU campus can lower fossil fuel consumption and, therefore, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Current investigation has shown that human exposure to aflatoxins is not limited to the administration of contaminated cereals,but water is another possible *** study was aimed to design easily applicable method to eliminate aflatoxin B2(AFB2)from contaminated drinking *** has been used for preparation of probiotic-coated polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and cellulose acetate(CA)*** of these hybrid nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR).SEM showed the proper coating of probiotic strains(Kluyveromyces lactis CBS 2359 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763)on both nanofiber *** areas(1-5 cm^(2))of the probiotic-nanofiber hybrid were used to enhance the removal of 20 ng/ml of aflatoxin B2(AFB2)from prepared AFB2-contaminated water over *** revealed that a 5 cm^(2) area of probiotic-coated PVA nanofibers can eliminate 97.5% of AFB2 as compared to 87.5%,90.5%,93.5%,and 95.5%,for 1 cm2,2 cm^(2),3 cm^(2),and 4 cm^(2),respectively,while probiotic-coated CA nanofibers were slightly less ***,the cytotoxicity of probiotics-CA treated water on cultured human fibroblasts was almost 10 times lower than the cytotoxicity recorded in probiotics-PVA treated ***,results of the current research suggest that probiotics-polymer nanofiber membranes can be used as an extra stage in the water purification system for the treatment of AFB2-contaminated water.

Habitual khat chewing and oral melanoacanthoma: A case report

BACKGROUND Habitual khat(Catha edulis) chewing has been proven to cause numerous oral tissue changes. However, oral melanoacanthoma triggered by chronic khat chewing is rare. Oral melanoacanthoma is an uncommon, sudden, asymptomatic, benign pigmentation of the oral cavity. Under the microscope, the epithelial layer of the oral mucosa showed dendritic melanocyte proliferation and acanthosis. The study aimed to highlight chronic khat chewing as a trigger for oral *** SUMMARY In the current study, we report a case of a 26-year-old male patient with a rare presentation of oral melanoacanthoma triggered by regular khat chewing. Many intrinsic and extrinsic factors can cause oral pigmentation. Chewing khat is an extrinsic factor that can cause several diseases, including oral pigmentation. In this case, the definitive diagnosis was oral melanoacanthoma. This diagnosis was made based on the patient’s history, clinical lesion presentation, and microscopic biopsy *** Habitual khat(Catha edulis) chewing causes many oral tissue changes including oral melanoacanthoma. The study aimed to highlight chronic khat chewing as a trigger for oral melanoacanthoma.

Monitoring Trace Metals in Some Cultured Freshwater Fish Species in Saudi Arabia

Three species of freshwater fishes, Oreochromis niloticus, Clarias lazera and Cyprinus carpio, were collected in marketing size from some fish farms in al-Kharj region, Riyadh area, Saudi Arabia and examined throughout the year 2012 for the following trace metals contents： chromium （Cr）, lead （Pb）, cobalt （Co）, nickel （Ni）, copper （Cu）, zinc （Zn）, iron （Fe） and cadmium （Cd）. The results showed no detection of Cd in all examined species, however, the mean values of other tested metals were within the standard permissible levels except for Pb which showed higher mean levels ranged from 2.05 ± 0.65 mg/kg to 5.30 ± 0.60 mg/kg in O. niloticus, 0.15 ± 0.13 mg/kg to 6.40 ± 0.10 mg/kg in C. lazera and 1.7 ± 0.20 mg/kg in C. carpio compared to the maximum permissible limits recorded by Saudi Arabia Standards Organization （SASO） for fish and shellfish. Consequently, from the public health point of view, efficient routine examination of cultured fishes to control trace metals during culture processes and before marketing is recommended.

Assessing the impact of artificial recharge on groundwater in an overexploited aquifer: A case study in the Cheria Basin, North-East of algeria

The Cheria region in Northeastern algeria has been facing aquifer overexploitation by the agricultural sector and prolonged droughts,resulting in a considerable decline in groundwater *** study investigates the feasibility of implementing artificial recharge techniques to replenish the Eocene aquifer which serves as the primary water source in the Cheria region.A 3D transient numerical model,based on the finite difference method,was used to simulate groundwater flow from 2021 to 2031 using Visual MODFLOW *** the modelling process,three scenarios were considered:(1)including pumping without a recharge,(2)recharge of the entire area through efficient infiltration without pumping,and(3)artificial recharge using river water infiltration basins at two sites,Draa Douamis sinkholes and Eocene limestone *** simulation results showed that aquifer exploitation without recharge caused significant drawdowns,which were 3 m to 7 m in the north-eastern part and 8 m to 12 m in the central and southern *** contrast,the second scenario,involving recharge without pumping,showed a rise in groundwater levels of 2 m to 2.7 m in the north-eastern part and 3 m to 3.62 m in the central and southern *** third scenario,employing artificial recharge,indicated a positive response to artificial recharge,with increased piezometric levels at the proposed sites,signifying a beneficial impact on the *** findings underline the potential of artificial recharge as a promising approach to address the groundwater depletion and environmental issues in the Cheria Basin.

Estimation of Two-Dimensional Correction Factors for Min-Sum Decoding of Regular LDPC Code

In this paper, two-dimensional (2-D) correction scheme is proposed to improve the performance of conventional Min-Sum (MS) decoding of regular low density parity check codes. The adopted algorithm to obtain the correction factors is simply based on estimating the mean square difference (MSD) between the transmitted codeword and the posteriori information of both bit and check node that produced at the MS decoder. Semi-practical tests using software-defined radio (SDR) and specific code simulations show that the proposed quasi-optimal algorithm provides a comparable error performance as Sum-Product (SP) decoding while requiring less complexity.
