Towards Expanding Quinoa Cultivation in Egypt: The Effect of Compost and Vermicompost on Quinoa Pests, Natural Enemies and Yield under Field Conditions

Increasing production and reducing pests’ population while preserving the environment is an essential goal nowadays. New strategies are needed to achieve this goal, to bridge food gap and achieve food security. Quinoa is a promising crop and could partially substitute wheat in baked products and assist in overcoming wheat gap in Egypt. This study aimed to identify pests and their natural enemies in quinoa plantation, the population dynamics of both and the effect of compost and vermicompost fertilization on pests’ population and quinoa yield under field conditions. The study was carried out in El Giza Research Station of the Agricultural Research Centre—Egypt, from November till March, in two successive seasons, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018. The experiment was set up in a complete randomized block design. Variety Masr 1 was tested and yellow sticky traps were used to monitor insects’ numbers. Three main pests were detected: Aphis craccivora, Empoasca. decipiens and Bemisia tabaci. The most common pest was aphids followed by potato leafhoppers. Compost fertilized quinoa attracted fewer pests and resulted in less yield compared to vermicompost. Parasitoids appeared earlier than predators and their numbers were the highest throughout the two seasons. Pests’ and natural enemies’ peaks were determined to facilitate IPM interventions. It is recommended to use vermicompost in quinoa production rather than compost, as it increased yield, provided that an IPM strategy is implemented in which natural enemies are the main players. Further investigations are needed to understand the interaction between predators and parasitoids in quinoa field in order to maximize the benefit of their existence in IPM programs.

Effectiveness of Three Bio-Rational Products and a Traditional Insecticide against <i>Thrips</i>spp. and <i>Bemisia tabaci</i>Attacking Tomato Fields in Kafr El-Sheik Governorate, Egypt

Destructive effects of conventional insecticides on environment have created a necessity to introduce bio-rational products in pest control programs. Effectiveness of bio-pesticide (Beauvaria bassiana), natural oil (anti-insect), a botanical extract (nimbecidine) and malathion insecticide was evaluated against Thrips spp. and Bemisia tabaci attacking tomato in Kafr El Sheik, Egypt. The trial was conducted during two successive seasons;2017-18 in a total area of 4912 m2 cultivated with tomato cultivar zero 42. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with five replications for each treatment. Yellow sticky traps were used to monitor population of both pests before and after spraying, in addition, their numbers on plants were counted. Results revealed that highest control rates of both pests were recorded after the fourth day of each spraying. Long inter-applications periods decreased effectiveness and the greatest control resulted when three consecutive sprayings were applied. Malathion achieved the highest suppression of both pests. Within the bio-rational pesticides, nimbecidine gave the greatest thrips control whereas products showed no significant difference for whiteflies. The study recommends those bio-rational compounds to join Integrated Pest Management programs of both pests in Egypt, taking into consideration spraying for 3 consecutive times with at least 5 days intervals.

Nucleotide Sequence Assessment of Four ORFs of Citrus Tristeza Virus: Evidence of Recombination

Citrus Tristeza Virus(CTV),usually occurs in nature as a mixture of *** naturally infected citrus(Citrus sinensis)trees grafted on sour orange rootstock were collected from three citrus growing governorates in Egypt(Sharqia,Qalyubia and Garbia).In this study,RT-PCR,Single-Strand Conformation Polymorphism(SSCP)and nucleotide sequence analysis were used for four independent CTV genomic regions(p65,p18,p20,and p23)to detect and assess the sequence and genetic variabilities among CTV Egyptian *** products(650 bp)for the CTV p23 gene obtained from the selected isolates were used for the SSCP analysis and DNA *** patterns of p23 gene for individual isolates yielded different complex haplotype *** sequence analysis of p23 region amplified from six isolates under study revealed that p23 shared high nucleotide identity 98.7%with T36 isolate from USA,*** analysis of p23 gene indicated a close evolutionary relationship between all examined isolates and Qaha isolate(T36 isolate group),suggesting that they may have originated from closely related *** sequence analysis of the three genes located on CTV 3′-coterminal overhang,p18,p20 and p65,amplified from isolate A3,Sharqia governorate,revealed that the p18,p65,and p20 genes were related to the T3-KB isolate from South Africa with 99%–100%sequence *** relationship analysis for p65,p18 and p20 ORFs clustered the current A3 isolate with T3 genotype *** recombination analysis identified three of six isolates from Sharqia,and Garbia as potential recombinant for p23 *** isolates T36 and T3 were identified as major donors for recombination events in isolate *** results concluded that p23 ORF likely to be as a hotspot region for recombination and originated through recombination *** current study indicated that recombination is an important factor for the origin of CTV strains in Egypt.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of fine-grained Dahab stream sediments, Southeastern Sinai, Egypt: emphasis on the intergrowths of Fe–Ti oxides

Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of stream sediments collected from 30 stations in the Dahab-Wadi Kid area(southeastern Sinai,Egypt)are *** studied sediments contain considerable amounts of heavy minerals,including abundant Fe–Ti oxides,with up to 25.94%index figure that measures the relative abundance of heavy minerals to light *** of the sediments and nature of Fe–Ti oxide intergrowths,in addition to some non-opaque heavy minerals,indicate multiple provenances with contributions from a variety of Neoproterozoic mafic to felsic *** amounts of heavy minerals are derived from schists that belong to the so-called Wadi Kid volcanosedimentary *** to the considerable contribution of the felsic intrusions represented by within-plate granites,the sediments are enriched in REE-bearing minerals(e.g.,monazite,cerianite,La-cerianite and allanite),V-bearing thorite,zircon,and a ZrO_(2) *** majority of Fe–Ti oxides are derived from the mafic intrusions,and they show evidence of pre-,syn-and post-depositional phases of alteration and formation of *** to the geochemical signature of the bulk silt fraction,there is remarkable enrichment of LREEs with distinct negative Eu anomaly,and this supports dominance of a provenance dominated by felsic intrusions(i.e.,the A-type within-plate granite and associated pegmatites).Also,the felsic provenance is responsible for slight abnormality of ∑PU+Th content(up to~37 ppm)and few anomalous samples bear uraniferous zircon and Ce-type *** present paper sheds light on the fertility of the Dahab stream sediments in some economic minerals for possible future exploitation,not for gold only,but for potential REEbearing minerals that are needed for a wide spectrum of modern technological industries.

Improvement of (Eruca sativa Mill) yield, oil, chemical constituents and antioxidant activity utilizing a by-product of yeast production (CMS) with zinc and boron under salinity stress conditions

The impact of low-quality irrigation water on plant development has garnered significant attention from researchers. In light of this, two field experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance, yield, oil production and composition, as well as active constituents of Rocket(Eruca sativa Mill) cultivated in calcareous soil under saline water irrigation. Foliar sprays containing condensed molasses soluble(CMS), zinc(Zn), and boron(B) alone or in combination were used for irrigation. The data obtained from measuring various parameters of Rocket following foliar spraying with CMS, Zn, B or their combinations demonstrated that most treatments resulted in a significant increase in these parameters. The highest values for most measurements were observed when foliar application included all three components(CMS + Zn + B), resulting in a seed yield of 184.6 g/m2and an oil content of 675.3 kg/ha. Compared to the control group, the macronutrient content of N, P, K, Mg, and Ca increased by 34.4%, 56%, 42%, 45%, and 39% respectively in the seeds treated with these ***, carbohydrates, proteins, phenolics flavonoids, and antioxidants showed increases of 24%, 34%,21%, 43%, and 28% respectively compared to the control group. Gas-liquid chromatography analysis identified ten components present in the seed oil characterized by higher unsaturated fatty acids ranging from 81.28% to92.28% and lower saturated fatty acids ranging from 6.72% to 8.21%. Therefore, foliar spray application including CMS, zinc, and boron can help alleviate salinity effects on Rocket plants grown under saline water irrigation conditions while improving growth, yield, oil production, and nutritional content such as total carbohydrates, proteins, and macronutrients levels.

A Syndrome of Vitamin D3 Deficiency/Fibromyalgia/Hyperparathyroidism Mimicking Rheumatoid Arthritis, a Clinical Prospective Study

Objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis is sometimes misdiagnosed for other diseases, like psoriatic arthritis, erosive OA, viral arthritis, reactive arthritis, IBD arthritis, Lyme’s disease, and palindromic rheumatism. Secondary hyperparathyroidism was not included in the differential diagnosis of RA, though it sometimes presents with joint pains and tenderness, and even arthritis. Fibromyalgia is a psychosomatic disorder characterized by chronic widespread pain and tender areas. Mimicry of some manifestations of these diseases sometimes results in misdiagnosis as RA. Methods: Two hundred patients previously diagnosed as RA from outpatient clinics in Al-Azhar Faculty of Medicine, attended as not responding to medical treatment of RA. All patients were subjected to a re-evaluation of disease activity including HAQ, and DAS 28, CDAI, and SDAI. Also, we measured serum vitamin D3, PTH, total and ionized Calcium, Phosphorus, Uric acid, ACPA, and other routine lab. All patients were exposed to various radiological imaging modalities. Results: Cases not responding to RA treatment were reevaluated and were found to have a syndrome of fibromyalgia associated with vitamin D3 deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Conclusions: Fibromyalgia/Hyperparathyroidism syndrome is an underdiagnosed disease, which results from chronic vitamin D3 deficiency. SHPT can cause bone erosions, which are mostly shaggy in appearance and distributed in the radiocarpal, radioulnar, metacarpophalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints, in contrast to that which predominate proximal IP joints of rheumatoid arthritis. Radiology of FM/HPT syndrome patients revealed a sign of spur-like excrescences in terminal finger tufts unilaterally or bilaterally, which we think is pathognomonic.

Genetic Algorithms for Perceptual Codes Extraction

In this work a new technique for global perceptual codes (GPCs) extraction using genetic algorithms (GA) is presented. GAs are employed to extract the GPCs in order to reduce the original number of features and to provide meaningful representations of the original data. In this technique the GPCs are build from a certain combination of elementary perceptual codes (EPCs) which are provided by the Beta-elliptic model for the generation of complex handwriting movements. Indeed, in this model each script is modelled by a set of elliptic arcs. We associate to each arc an EPC. In the proposed technique we defined four types of EPCs. The GPCs can be formed by many possible combinations of EPCs depending on their number and types. So that, the problem of choosing the right combination for each GPC can be regarded as a global optimization problem which is treated in this work using the GAs. Several simulation examples are presented to evaluate the interest and the efficiency of the proposed technique.

Drainage vs. non-drainage after cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis:a retrospective study

Many surgeons practice prophylactic drainage after cholecystectomy without reliable evidence,this study was conducted to answer the question whether to drain or not to drain after cholecystectomy for acute calculous cholecystitis.A retrospective review of all patients who had cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis in Aseer Central Hospital,Abha,Saudi Arabia,was conducted from April 2010 to April *** were extracted from hospital case *** data included clinical presentation,routine investigations and liver function *** data included excessive adhesions,bleeding,bile leak,and drain *** cases such as pericholecystic collections,mucocele and empyema were also *** who needed therapeutic drainage were *** data included hospital stay,volume of drained fluid,time of drain removal,and drain site *** study included 103 patients allocated into two groups;group A（n = 38） for patients with operative drain insertion and group B（n = 65） for patients without drain *** number of patients with preoperative diagnosis of acute non-complicated cholecystitis was significantly greater in group B（80%） than group A（36.8%）（P 〈 0.001）.Operative time was significantly longer in group *** patients who were converted from laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy were in group *** analysis revealed that hospital stay was significantly（P 〈 0.001） longer in patients with preoperative *** was no added benefit for prophylactic drain insertion after cholecystectomy for acute calculous cholecystitis in non-complicated or in complicated cases.
