Plastic thermo-electrochemical cells (thermocells) involving aqueous potassium ferricyanide/ferrocyanide electrolyte have been investigated as an alternative to conventional thermoelectrics for thermal energy harvesting. Plastic thermocells that consist of all pliable materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), fabrics, and wires are flexible enough to be wearable on the human body and to be wrapped around cylindrical shapes. The performance of the thermocells is enhanced by incorporating carbon nanotubes into activated carbon textiles, due to improved charge transfer at the interface. In cold weather conditions (a surrounding temperature of 5 °C), the thermocell generates a short-circuit current density of 0.39 A/m2 and maximum power density of 0.46 mW/m2 from body heat (temperature of 36 °C). For practical use, we have shown that the thermocell charges up a capacitor when worn on a T-shirt by a person. We also have demonstrated that the electrical energy generated from waste pipe heat using a serial array of the thermocells and voltage converters can power a typical commercial light emitting diode (LED).

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)enables rapid detection of single molecules with high ***,quantitative and sensitive SERS analysis has been a challenge due to the lack of reliable SERS-active *** this study,we developed a quantitative SERS-based immunoassay using enzyme-guided Ag growth on Raman labeling compound(RLC)-immobilized gold nanoparticle(Au NP)-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag).The enzyme amplified Ag+reduction as well as Ag growth on the RLC-immobilized Au NP-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC),which resulted in a significant increase in SERS *** the presence of target antigens such as immunoglobulinG(IgG)or prostate-specific antigen(PSA),Ab1-Antigen-Ab2 immune complex with alkaline phosphatase triggered an enzyme-catalyzed reaction to convert 2-phospho-L-ascorbic acid(2-phospho-L-AA)to ascorbic acid(AA).As produced AA reduced Ag+to Ag,forming an Ag hot spot on the surface of SiO2@Au-RLC,which enhanced the SERS signal of SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag in a solution with a target antigen *** plasmonic immunoassay for IgG detection showed a high linearity of SERS intensity in the range of 0.6 to 9.0 ng/mL with a detection limit(LOD)of 0.09 ng/mL,while an LOD of 0.006 ng/mL was obtained for *** results indicate that the sensitivity of our novel SERS-based immunoassay is higher than that of conventional enzyme-based colorimetric immunoassays.

AIM:To evaluate clinical validity of the compression anastomosis ring(CARTM27) anastomosis in left-sided colonic resection. METHODS:A non-randomized prospective data collection was performed for patients undergoing an elective left-sided colon resection,followed by an anastomosis using the CARTM27 between November 2009 and January *** criteria of the use of the CARTM27 were anastomoses between the colon and at or above the intraperitoneal *** primary short-term clinical endpoint,rate of anastomotic leakage,and other clinical outcomes,including intraand postoperative complications,length of operation time and hospital stay,and the ring elimination time were evaluated. We aimed to prospectively evaluate the influence of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate （HoLEP） on the overall postoperative sexual function of benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） patients with lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTS） and to explore the relationship between sexual function and LUTS. From January 2010 to December 2011, sixty sexually active consecutive patients with BPH who underwent HoLEP were prospectively enrolled in the study. All patients filled out the Male Sexual Health Questionnaire （MSHQ） for evaluation of their overall sexual function and the International Prostatic Symptom Score （IPSS） for pre- and post-operative 6 months evaluation of their voiding symptoms. The LUTS and sexual function changes were statistically analyzed. The preoperative and 6 months postoperative status of the patients was compared using uroflowmetry and IPSS questionnaires. The analysis revealed significant improvements following HoLEP. Among the sub-domains of the MSHQ, postoperative sexual function, including erection, ejaculation, sexual satisfaction, anxiety or sexual desire, did not significantly change after HoLEP （P 〉 0.05）, whereas satisfaction scores decreased slightly due to retrograde ejaculation in 38 patients （63.3%）. Sexual satisfaction improved significantly and was correlated with the improvements of all LUTS and the quality-of-life （QoL） domains in IPSS after surgery （QoL; relative risk [RR]： -0.293; total symptoms, RR： -0.411; P 〈 0.05）. The nocturia score was associated with the erectile function score （odds ratio 0.318, P = 0.029）. The change in ejaculatory scores did not show significant association with IPSS scores. HoLEP did not influence overall sexual function, including erectile function. In addition, sexual satisfaction improved in proportion with the improvement of LUTS.

The objective of this work is to compare the tool performance of TiN and TiAlN coated carbides end-mills deposited by an arc ion plating (AIP) method, using honing treatment to polish the cutting edge surface sleekly. The curve of surface roughness versus honing time showed a rapid improvement initially and thereafter became steady, manifesting a saturation effect. The optimal honing time related to surface roughness was determined to be approximately 20 s. As the surface roughness increased, the critical loads reduced. At an average surface roughness (Ra) of 0.028 μm, the highest critical loads of TiN and TiAlN coating layers were 98 and 114 N, respectively. Tool performances of uncoated and coated tools were conducted under high speed machining (HSM) of AISI D2 cold-worked die steel (62 HRC). Consequently, the TiAlN coated end-mill using honing treatment showed excellent tool life under HSM conditions.

Symptom Experience and Quality of Life in Colorectal Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy-A Secondary Publication

Objective:To evaluate symptom experience and quality of life(QoL)and to identify the predictors of QoL among colorectal cancer patients undergoing ***:A cross-sectional study was conducted on 107 colorectal cancer patients at a university-affiliated hospital between june 1 and July 30,*** Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal(FACT-C)and Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale-Short Form(MSAS-SF)were used to assess symptom experience and QoL of these *** were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation,t-test,ANOVA,and hierarchical multiple ***:The mean QoL score for colorectal cancer patients was 88.78±*** most frequently experienced physical and psychological symptoms were numbness/tingling and *** and psychological symptoms have a significant negative association with *** economic status was significantly associated with QoL in patients’general *** regression analyses showed that high psychological symptoms(β=-0.63,P<0.001),middle perceived economic status(β=-0.22,P=0.009),and low perceived economic status(β=-0.36,P<0.001)were statistically significant in predicting patients’low ***:Symptom experience and QoL are essential variables that should be acknowledged when delivering health care to colorectal cancer *** attention to the reduction and comprehensive symptom management of psychological distress could improve QoL among colorectal cancer patients.
