Introduction of silver into some inorganic material causes the resulting mixture to have antibacterial activity. Here, we investigated the role of silver in the bactericidal activity of silver-loaded zeolite, by measuring the effects of silver-loaded zeolite on Escherichia coli cell viability under conditions in which the oxidation state of the silver was controlled electrochemically. Bactericidal activity was observed when the sweeping voltage between 0 and 0.7 V was applied to the silver electrode. When nitrogen gas bubbling or reactive oxygen scavengers were added to the experimental system, bactericidal activity decreased. These results indicated that the redox cycle, Ag0 Ag+, caused the dissolved oxygen to form reactive oxygen species.

Objectives: Our aim was to clarify the study characteristics of countries that have registered clinical trials studies and to calculate the percentage of clinical trials that were registered in each country’s registry, and try to find and evaluate the factors determining that percentage. Design and Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional study using data from clinical trials registered from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2015. Only countries with more than 2000 registered trials were included for further study. Ten countries met that criterion: United States, Japan, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Germany, United Kingdom, and Netherland. The percentage of clinical trials that were registered in each country’s registry was calculated, and the factors determining that percentage were sought and analyzed through an exploratory approach. Results: The chi-squared test of independence indicated that the rate of clinical trial registration significantly differed between countries. From the adjusted standardized residuals, the percentage of clinical trials that were registered in the country of origin was higher in the United States, India, Japan, and Australia/New Zealand than in the European Union and China. Conclusion: The United States requires that informed consent documents for clinical trials contain clinical trial registration numbers from ***, which could be the reason for the extremely high percentage of registered clinical trials (94%). Since the European Union does not have this requirement, clinical trials conducted in the European Union do not have to be registered in the countries in which they are conducted.

Polymerization of methyl methacrylate in toluene, at various temperatures with silica gel grade 955 supported \[C\-5Me\-5\]\-2SmMe(THF) was studied. This type of polymerization exhibits several characteristics. The PMMA obtained has higher number average molecular weight and wider molecular weight distribution compared with those obtained by solution polymerization with homogeneous catalyst system, although the polymerization activity is lower.

The Chao Phraya River and the network of canals or “klongs” are the origin of Bangkok’s nick-name “Venice of the East”. Its amphibian nature of lower delta area where used to be covered by the sea around 5000 years ago provides a water-based settlement for the citizens. Rivers as an agricultural irrigation system are also used for daily consumption, transportation, and drainage channels. Bangkok was established in 1782 as the capital of Thailand by King Rama I of the Chakri Dynasty. The location is on a flood plain delta of the Chao Phraya River with the same consideration as the up north old capital Ayutthaya;the river is performed as a natural defense against enemies and also provides a water-based settlement for the citizens. The worst flood in Thailand’s history occurred during the 2011 monsoon season;July to November;that became the severest flood disaster hit parts of the capital city of Bangkok and resulted in a total of 815 deaths and 65 of Thailand’s 77 provinces were declared flood disaster zones, and over 20,000 square kilometers (7700 square miles) of farmland was damaged. The most affected areas were the recent capital Bangkok and the old capital Ayutthaya. The major causes were not only from the natural disaster but also water management failures from the human disaster. The studies aimed to include the survey of after-flood areas, reviewing the history of the waterfront communities and their attitudes toward development and changes, then discussed threats and crisis to the cultural landscape, the cause and effects of the disaster, the theoretical framework of the best management practices and the resolutions models proposed by the involved authorities. Whilst, history also gives us a sense of identity and traditional wisdom, the paper tried to find a paradigm shift and invented best practices for future generation flood protection using “the meaning and spirit of cultural landscape” model.

This is a survey on our recent works on bi-harmonic maps on CR-manifolds and foliated Riemannian manifolds, and also a research paper on bi-harmonic maps principal G-bundles. We will show, (1) for a complete strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold , every pseudo bi-harmonic isometric immersion into a Riemannian manifold of non-positive curvature, with finite energy and finite bienergy, must be pseudo harmonic;(2) for a smooth foliated map of a complete, possibly non-compact, foliated Riemannian manifold into another foliated Riemannian manifold, of which transversal sectional curvature is non-positive, we will show that if it is transversally bi-harmonic map with the finite energy and finite bienergy, then it is transversally harmonic;(3) we will claim that the similar result holds for principal G-bundle over a Riemannian manifold of negative Ricci curvature.

Balloon Kyphoplasty to Thoracic Vertebral Fracture with Postoperative Treatment Difficulty: A Case Report

In this communication, we report our experience with a case of thoracic vertebral fracture which was treated by balloon kyphoplasty and which later developed an infection at the fracture site, causing treatment difficulty. The patient was a 74-year old female with a history of remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome as well as diabetes mellitus. She had been diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia as well as a fracture of the T12 vertebral and was admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine to receive medical/non-surgical treatment. Medical treatment was carried out and the pneumonia symptoms improved but getting out of bed was impossible due to the continuing of back pain. Therefore, T12 balloon kyphoplasty was performed in order to allow for early ambulation. Back pain started to improve immediately after surgery, but at 2 months after surgery, the back pain relapsed, and fever developed. Imaging tests revealed a vertebral osteolysis of T11-T12 and, as a measure against vertebral collapse due to postoperative infection or osteomyelitis of the thoracic spine, the feasibility of balloon kyphoplasty was considered. Antibiotic treatment was carried out, and when findings showed that the infection had resolved, posterior fusion (T9-L2) was performed using percutaneous pedicle screws. When balloon kyphoplasty for the treatment of a vertebral fracture is performed in an immunocompromised patient early after injury, the treatment needs to be chosen carefully, and the possibility of a latent vertebral osteomyelitis should be kept in mind.

Urgent endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy for acute obstructive suppurative cholangitis-induced sepsis

Acute obstructive suppurative cholangitis(AOSC) due to biliary lithiasis is a life-threatening condition that requires urgent biliary decompression. Although endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) with stent placement is the current gold standard for biliary decompression, it can sometimes be difficult because of failed biliary cannulation. In this retrospective case series, we describe three cases of successful biliary drainage with recovery from septic shock after urgent endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy(EUS-CDS) was performed for AOSC due to biliary lithiasis. In all three cases, technical success in inserting the stents was achieved and the patients completely recovered from AOSC with sepsis in a few days after EUS-CDS. There were no procedure-related complications. When initial ERCP fails, EUS-CDS can be an effective life-saving endoscopic biliary decompression procedure that shortens the procedure time and prevents post-ERCP pancreatitis, particularly in patients with AOSC-induced sepsis.
